Great review. Car is one of the best looking in its class ... Value is definitely there... Wish it was lighter by 200lbs but hopefull after market can fix that. For your transmissions shifting woes, there's a could me a few things that could be done. 1 - Sport + is mainly for canyon carving and track duty(doubtful people will take it there) aka pushing the car hard... Not meant for every day driving, It holds the gearings similar what you would do with with a manual when attacking corners. It's annoying as hell outside of those 2 situations mentioned because of what you pointed out. 2 - use individual mode...you can choose which chassis options you like... I personally like sport handling, normal steering and normal transmission for driving every day. If I want the aggressive shift temporarily I would hit D/S button to get it on it aggressively or to engage manual mode with paddle shifters. 3 - switch to sport mode the gearing is different if I recall so don't get that aggressive holding. savagegeese showed some Acura marketing details that showed how the Integrated Dynamic Modes works.... Hope this helps

Hi Sam. I enjoyed the video, and I appreciate that you provided such a personal perspective based on spending one day with a 2022 Acura TLX Type-S. Your reflections are similar to mine as a former 2022 Acura RDX owner who has test driven the Acura TLX Type-S. What I appreciated about the test drive was a perceived notion of Acura's focus on engineering refinement between engine, transmission and especially suspension in this iteration. I was just slightly confounded by your frustration with using "sport-mode". It's my understanding that "sport mode" is supposed to provide full manual control (at least within the confines of protecting the transmission).

That's correct. I own one, and it seems like he's confused about how to drive it. I watched a bunch of his drag races and although I expected the car to get beat, it was obvious that something was going on with the cars. I think the car is faster in drive than trying to manually shift.

Transmission is probably the biggest let down of this car. Honda probably didn't want to redesign the transmission significantly to handle more power and torque. This is probably why this engine is not that much more powerful than the standard V6. If they have a manual option, Honda can probably tune the engine with more power.

I’m sorry, but there are things that may be “secret” but they are in the manual. If you think it holds the revs too high, DON’T put it in sport plus. That is for corner to corner mountain carving. If you want it to hold your paddle shift command, put the transmission in sport by pressing the D/S button again. Then when you use the paddles, the display will show “Smx” where “x” is the gear it is in, and it will hold it to redline. You just have to know the details of operations, and maybe a week is not long enough.

I figured that in Sport tranny only, it works well. They should have called Sport plus “track” - I tried everything and the car will still shift for you. If you put the car in sport plus and tranny sport plus, the car seems to struggles.

@@SamCarLegion what he is saying is leave the car in normal mode and press the D/S button on the gear selector if you want to really manually shift and it will hold gears for you. I was beyond excited for this car and it would have been my 3rd Acura (I’m 24 and I’ve only ever owned Acuras), but I am extremely disappointed by its performance. For $53k (realistically closer to $58k thanks to dealers marking it up), it’s not acceptable to me that it is so significantly slower than other cars such as the G70 and Stinger. It looks so much better than those cars in my opinion but I just can’t accept the fact that the car will get gapped by every other sports sedan on the road. I’m going to get a S5 instead now unless the 2023 / 2024 TLX becomes more competitive on the road. I would also need for it to include features that those other cars have like a HUD and 360 camera (Insane it doesn’t have a 360 camera in the U.S). I would gladly pay closer to $60K for it to “fix” all of those “issues”. Even after writing all that, it’s looks make me second guess myself all the time… it’s a beautiful car.

The TLX TypeS is not made to drag race. It’s not trying to be the fastest car out there. You have to understand what the car is and its performance. With that being said I however feel like it should be a twin turbo 3.5V6 with 400 horses. But they didn’t do that. IF you want a faster car then go buy one. This car is made for handling, around the track. That’s where it shines. If you want fast go buy the M3/C63/RS6. All fast cars. You should never buy a car based on if it’s not as fast as another, buy it because YOU like it. Not because of what other think or say. Sam or any other KZbinr should never influence your choice on buying anything. If it’s my money I’d buy this or the C43AMG wagon.

@@IRaoulDuke The majority of people who buy performance sedans don’t do drag races that’s a fact. Some do but most don’t. Matter of fact people who buy sports cars the majority of them don’t bring the cars to the track, they drive on the highway and in the city to show it off. And that’s ok, however how many times do we see exotic cars downtown and parked up at the local star bucks or whole foods, most people buy cars for status and not to test the limits of the car. You do know how expensive tires cost and brake pads cost on a M3 for example right? IF you got money then sure track your car, but if it’s your daily driver you won’t be tracking every weekend. I feel like the transmission issue is because of the 6200 RPM redline combined with the 10 speed. Too many gears and too low of a redline. As is it always feels like it’s in too high RPM or too low RPM.

14:36 -- I think you aren't understanding what the transmission is tuned to do. When you change it to "Dynamic Plus", the transmission logic means to keep the engine on boost and up in its rev range. (Hondas aren't "in pain" at a mere 4k rpms, either) When you let off the gas and the car decelerates, then yes, it'll hold the engine up high and downshift as needed. That's the sporty nature of Dynamic Plus. The not-quite-fully-manual-manual-mode - the best reason I can think of for the automatic upshifts is to protect the engine. They don't want it banging off the rev limiter, and they definitely don't want the opposite problem of the driver trying to choose too low of a gear. I rarely use fully-manual in either my TLX or the CVT Civic that I traded in unless I want engine braking on downhills or a little quicker driveline response in mixed traffic. When you changed it back to Normal mode at 18:45 then yes, the transmission behaves more "normally" and keeps the RPMs lower more often. That's why it's called Normal mode.

I get it....even the gt3 in sport + mode will upshift when the computer realizes you're not looking for the lowest gear.....the TLX S, however, almost eggs you on to hit boost by hanging that gear. She eventually shifts but not nearly fast enough if you are driving mellow.
@rwg1052 жыл бұрын
Sam, don’t complain about the shifting when it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to do! Sport+ is not intended for daily driving. It’s used for aggressive driving and will hold the revs in the higher range no matter what speed you’re driving. As Mengke WANG stated above, the S on the transmission is NOT for Sport, it’s for SEQUENTIAL. It’s a manual mode meant to be used when you want to use the paddle shifters. It will hold the gears until you manually shift or unless you hit the redline (to protect the engine). You can use Sequential mode in any Dynamic driving mode and it will hold the gears as it’s designed to do.

The S type sedan is a heavy sedan, wish they had shed some weight off maybe trunk, roof and hood? The MdX S type is heavy too and while they both boast a good amount of power. It is not enough power to move either one, transmission from your video shows some what confused when down shifting but that is what we have for now. Maybe Acura will work on getting the shifting programming revised to increase the overall efficiency of the car under different conditions.
