Is the NEW 2021 Acura TLX Type S a better sport sedan than a Genesis G70?

The Type S is back and Acura is bringing more performance to the 2021 TLX. This sport sedan is meant to go up against the BMW M340i, Audi S4, Mercedes AMG, Genesis G70, and Stinger GT. Under the hood is an ALL NEW 3.0L turbocharged V6 that is producing 355HP & mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Power gets to the ground through the SH-AWD system. On the outside you will find unique bodywork, carbon fiber aero, and 20in wheels. On the inside you will find a Type S specific interior with carbon fiber accents, and 10in infotainment system. Is the NEW 2021 Acura TLX Type S a better sport sedan than a Genesis G70?

People are disappointed that it under-performs at the track. This car was designed to be a stylish, reliable, responsive, stable daily driver. If it were a track car, it would be called Type R. I'm sure I would really enjoy driving this on my 45 minute commute to work every day. The design is gorgeous inside and out.

I just bought this in that Tiger eye pearl and I really dig that color now , the cars handling in the corners with the gas going really is amazing to feel , you can definitely feel that rear end helping to turn the car , it’s feels so nimble , and let me tell you this car is not light , but is doesn’t feel like it , it drives nice and quiet road noise is very low . It’s a great cruiser and that 3D sound system is phenomenal absolutely phenomenal, wow what great staging it has , and it’s plenty quick transmission shift super fast , it sounds like a dual clutch when shifting up , very fast . The price is another thing to be excited about , it’s like 10 to 12k cheaper then a comparable BMW Audi or Mercedes and it’s got that legendary Acura build and reliability, top notch car for sure , I’m very happy !!!

I know that the other cars in this class are a bit faster than the Type S but the TLX Type S is the best looking car in its segment, in my opinion. For me, it's plenty fast and it just checks all the boxes I'm looking for in a car and that's why I would choose this one over the other vehicles he mentioned.

The guy who lives next door to me has an old TL. It has 200 K miles on it and drives like a dream. You’d never believe it has that many miles. He has matained since it was almost brand new for the original owner. Then he bought it. It has an aluminum frame that makes it like no other front driver. Really nice old car.

That may be, but around here in the Midwest, Hyundai’s and Kia’s have a “Buy Here, Pay Here” stigma. Just like Nissan, Hyundai’s and Kia’s are usually driven by low class people in low class neighborhoods. I wouldn’t buy a used one for fear it hasn’t been properly maintained. $50 for a desperately needed oil change vs. a new cell phone case and a Chicken McNugget meal… I’m pretty confident I know what one a Korean car driver is going to pick.

We knew that lexus is way more focus on their comfort not performance, but is want to more power just get the gsf or is500

Major ZONK to Acura for missing the mark = The TLX Type S V6 Turbo is not available with the Advance accessories Package. The V6 turbo, SH-AWD + Advance Package is a must or else No Sale. Even so, thanks, Joe for another great review

I just test drove this car on June 27. Excellent fit & finish, excellent gear box & love the new Turbo. The 10 speed automatic is flawless. The car is beautiful with the exception of the dash. They didn’t future proofs this car’s technology good enough & they should have lit it up with more power. Here’s my recommendations 1. 3.5 liter V6 380 HP/396 IBS of torque. 2. Add Brembo Brakes to the rear for 360 cover 3. Larger Sunroof, standard is dated 4. Full Digital Cockpit 5. Add wireless Apple CarPlay/Android auto 6. Add Apple CarKey 7. Add all advance features on TLX model 8. Redesign infotainment, add touch screen This is just my personal opinion! Some people may not care about these things! But Acura needs to have the latest technology now so customers can enjoy the best there is to offer! Great Review! Thanks Laura!!

Everyone is talking about the bmw/audis etc. Everyone knows the Acura isn’t going to be as fast or dynamic as a bmw etc, but will deliver great value. The exact same thing is said about the G70. It’s actually one of the worst at handling in its segment. Understeers bad. It’s not great on gas (piss poor for a 6 cylinder), slowest in its segment by far, handles like a whale, interior is on the sucky side. It’s only pros are the sound system is pretty solid, it looks good (problem is it looks much meaner than it is), and hear the steering feedback is pretty good. For what it is it should be like tops 50k flat new loaded. Especially when the M340i embarrasses it to the point you’d think they’re in different segments. It’s a little bit more. For TLX S Type money I’d be running over and grabbing a G70 3.3T.

Torn between the Type S and Stinger GT2 I love both, Acura's interior is miles ahead IMO, but GT2 practicality is awesome. Leaning towards Type S CPO in couple of years, Blue/Red or Black/Red

@@unrealisticgoals Kinda agree,The Stinger GT is a very unique car, I loved the design when it was first announced, I test drove the GT2 and I fell in love with ride, power, handling and stability, design wise it is also awesome, however my only concern with Kia is after sale service, and warranty, it is a big part of owning the car, you don't get that great service and warranty with Kia and I heard a lot of bad stories about their service, I love the the Stinger possibly more than Acura, but owning 2010 Acura TL V6 SH-AWD for 10 years with 125K miles, my experience with the car and service is top notch, still drives smooth as new.

The TLX sounds way better than I expected. Definitely sounds better than the G70 exhaust note. I like both cars, but a sedan does not fit our lifestyle anymore. It’s important to remember that torque vectoring only occurs if you accelerate into a turn. So if you’re turning while breaking or without accelerating, you’re not utilizing torque vectoring. And you’re just turning a 4200 pound hunk of metal. So to really get the most out of this car’s ability to handle corners, sometimes the way the driver drives might need to change, especially those who decelerate into turns who need to switch to accelerating into turns. And it’s not a driving habit that’s easy to change.

@@DM72513 unfortunately we're stuck in a world where most cars look like Ipads were slapped on the dash and I don't like that, but it's in just about everything. Heck nice Mercedes look like they just slapped a few Ipads on the dash. Believe me, it is something I hope goes away sooner than later. Other than that I love the interior

Great review once again Joe. I love the look of the Type S way more than the BMW 340 and the G70. BMW still looks outdated from the outside and inside compared to both the G70 and the Type S. The Type S just nails it in the looks category from the inside and outside in my eyes. Also it has plenty of power and is way more hooked up on the road than the G70. The numbers may favor the BMW and G70 in terms of HP but the Type S is easily the best overall car in this price category. Definable a winner.

I think I would take the Type-S over the G70 for the better looks and the fact that it gets a more updated interior. Wish they had given the G70 the GV70 interior treatment.

I think you say that cause Acura takes forever to update their interior. I still prefer the driving dynamics of the G70 and Stinger. The chassis on those two cars are phenomenal. I think Doug Demuro mentioned in his review no matter what Acura has said that it still feels front wheel bias. Regardless they are all good looking and performing cars.

It wouldn't have made any sense since the G70 is only a refresh. The full redesign is likely 2.5 years away as Hyundai/Genesis is quick to fully make their products over.

Great review as always. I disagree on the touch screen though. Just bought an MDX and really like the track pad. With that hand rest I never have to lift my arm to use it. No finger prints, no distractions, and I prefer the looks to the giant touch screens.

For the price I go for the G70, were it compete with Mercedes-Benz,BMW Audi but Acura don't near this brands. And the last G70 won the car of the year by motor trend, you can go see the vids and won North America Car of the year Award.

Torn by the decision between the G70 and this. Have a 2013 TL was thinking of getting the G70 Sport, but now have to consider the Type S as a strong option. Lower HP and lesser Brakes than G70 are a bit of a negative but exterior and interior are a plus for the Type S

This is a great looking car. Acura hit the mark with it. Me been a 2020 Kia Stinger GT1 owner can say this might make me move on from my Stinger, but not yet. Have to see what else comes in the market.

Love it bro! I have an accord 2.0T which is pretty quick but I’d love to get a v6 turbo. I would love the tlx type s but it’s a little too expensive. Might have to for a genesis g70 3.3t or the stinger with the same engine

From what I see from the other reviews of the G70, the G70 has better tech and interior. I think it’s even quicker. The handling is another question . Another reviewer described the handling of the G70 to the likes of the M340i 👀

I think the G 70 has the fastest top speed, 167mph. The TLX tops at 155?And the M340 is limited to 130mph if it has all season tires, 155mph with performance tires.

I love the look. I wish they had matched the Infiniti Q50 red sport with 400hp. They really left a big opportunity on the table IMO. I’m going to trade my 2017 MDX in for a 2022 MDX type s as soon as I’m ready.

I traded in my 2017 mdx for a 2022 love the change. Went white on saddle brown. Then I traded my 2018 tlx a spec for a 2021 type S. No regrets

Overall, the one to beat. Rich racing history proves itself in the true sport models, so the only true comparable, must be the BMW. Great style, with that rear end just killing it. Yeah, the infotainment is a bit of a zonk, but I'd think the trac pad is easy to use. No available rear connectivity is a head-scratcher, tbh. Black Dragon, really? The TLX-S runs 4.7 to 60...it will smoke a Honda Accord 2.0 in a drag race. Re the Stinger, the Kia is quicker in straight-line acceleration, but will lose racing on track. The TLX-S corners incredibly well considering it has SHAWD and superb chassis tuning. And if the TLX-S was to return in a few years later for a 2nd go, the Acura could win staying in 1st gear because the Stinger is a Kia and would already be sitting in an auto wrecking yard.

@Black Dragon, I’ve seen the same drag video. You are unaware that Acura offers the TLX (base model), and now the type S. The drag race you speak of was an Accord 2.0 against the base TLX. And were both to have raced on a track where cornering & handling is involved, the TLX would have handily won...Acura SHAWD machines are chassis-tuned for superior handling/cornering, less so much so for FWD-only Hondas. Also note that other than reducing turbo lag, a single turbo configuration is not inferior to a twin turbo setup; net hp gains are about the boosted intake manifold pressure (and temp.). Now the Type S losing to a Maxima...are you serious?!? The Nissan is good for maybe 5.7 sec to 60mph. The TLX-S will smoke it by at least a full second. Also, the TLX-S will seriously out-corner/out-handle any & all Chrysler sedan performance iterations it offers. Again, you failed to understand what Acura created here. Yes, Chrysler & Kias are bottom-dwellers among the automotive industry...it’s closely related to inferior engine growth & build quality, and why they rate low in reliability & longevity (but different strokes for different folks). Remember, anyone can drop a high h.p. motor into an engine bay, but that hardly makes for something truly noteworthy.
