course its bloody hopeless what good is hope in the face of reasonable expectations. what to be aware of is that music is not the method of memetic exchange it used to be. there are technological advents that micromanage awareness. you cannot propogate an idea simply by presenting it to others. the most one will gain from music production, only maybe i suppose if they are lucky, is some reign over their own perception and sensibility, authorisation of immediate awareness instead of awareness by reference (eg. thinking something is amazing because you don't know how to do it). its not going to make you rich or bring in income for more than a short period because there are people who have vested interests in what society thinks and they aren't going to let any folks wander in and just start plugging new ideas. there are so many safeguards against this in socierty using methods that common people are not aware of. watch, compose, pass the time. its basically a state approved hobby, celebrate the existence of media, the power to make humans have shitty physiques and waste all their time on bullshit.

livestreams are so underrated in terms of learning. If you approach them as a college like lecture and don't skip around/actually watch the entire process the amount of information your brain will subconsciously soak up is insane. Panda eyes had THE BEST livestreams back in the day (all deleted now) but god I watched every single stream front to back probably a million times.
@SolStateMusic
@SolStateMusic 3 жыл бұрын
For sure! Diving deep is a great way to learn. It allows for "invisible mentors", and imagining what they might say. BTW you got a great ear for melody - keep up your vids!
@atomictraveller

you'd be surprised how much derp you pick up at the same time. there are some real impressions of what good music production sounds like, because fuck if i haven't heard the same fucking music in every recording for the last fifteen years. back in the 80s when no one had any idea what an acid line or a hoover was, sometimes you'd hear something that wasn't like someone mashing a bunch of tips together to make the same bland "omg sad" song young people make all the time now. all that stuff you subconsciously pick up targeted for media producers... get the picture?
@OhShootKid
@OhShootKid 3 жыл бұрын
@@atomictraveller People aren't less creative now than they were in the 80s, you just weren't watching live streams back then. Way more people have access to production now, so the barrier to entry is lower, but if you look in the right places, there's some phenomenal stuff out there now. And youtube has revolutionized learning in fantastic ways :)
@atomictraveller
@atomictraveller 3 жыл бұрын
@@OhShootKid they sure as fuck are. you might have missed it, but since 2002, i've been one of the parties responsible for creating that access. how do you make a sound today? you turn on the computer. how do you do that in 1980? no one had any idea. you're gonna have to die and see your life through different eyes to understand how similar it all is. srsly.. i'm a vst developer, you're gonna tell me about what i've been doing for the last two decades? i made this all possible.
@OhShootKid
@OhShootKid 3 жыл бұрын
@@atomictraveller Great, which of your VSTs do I use in my projects, I'd love to know :) There weren't basketball courts on every corner and accessible gyms in the 40s, so basketball must have been a lot better back then huh. There are way more bad producers today than there were in the 80s, sure, but that's just a question of volume. Needing to understand more was a stronger barrier to entry, but you can still learn just as much today and have better tools to do so. People will always find a way to be creative, because at the end of the day, we're creative out of our human spirit and desire to engage with art--the people who are limited in their skills or creativity today are no different from the past, you just have more people engaging with this side of music. And I for one think that's a great thing. But I'm sorry you're so disappointed with the state of music. I can imagine that would feel really frustrating.

As a full time producer who lives in LA and makes a living making records, I have to say these resources are incredible. I’m lucky enough to have worked with some of the guys in this video and call one a friend…. And I still watch them religiously because you never ever stop learning and there is no “mastery level” in music. You take what you like, and reject what you don’t… all the while building a wealth of knowledge that can make you feel like you’re constantly growing and getting better.. which is the goal!! Thanks Sol state. :) 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Another great tip: Start from scratch if an idea you have isn't working out, whether is one section or the entire song. Just completely get rid of the patterns and synths for that idea and start a new one. It lifts a huge weight off of your shoulders and clears your mind better to leave space for better ideas when you start from a clean slate.

I think the tip from Ian on singable phrases is probably one of the most important ones. like don't just duplicate your midi and replace the instrument, try to find the perfect spot for a new instrument to fit in. also separating instruments rhythmically also makes mixing easier since fewer frequencies clash

Your channel is an absolute godsend, I love how you’re able to distill these massive sprawling production concepts into succinct clips from established producers that clearly know what they’re doing. You’re an asset to producers everywhere, and I have the utmost respect for this content. I do have to say one thing, take it from a guy who isn’t trying to do this for a living- many of the clips in this compilation speak about production like it’s a job, and there’s one right thing that you’re trying to work towards. There’s not! Do whatever the fuck you want, use the tips as inspiration and bounce out your sounds and your product if YOU think they sound good!! The “corporate” take on production sucks the fun out of it real fast, until you find a sound, emulating another artist can get you where you need to go, but you should never take someone else’s tips on how to do art as fact! I’ll step down off my soapbox now, but keep up the great work man!

After Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, there was nowhere for dubstep to go anymore. I totally expected Skrillex to fade away after all the hype. And yet here is, at the forefront of musical innovation and taking young talent under his protection.

@@singthedanielsong lookup for fandango and you’ll know, I play a sort of ukelele called jarana and sometimes we start at 4 pm and go til 4 am... of course there are in between breaks for some of the musicians but there will be no silence at all. Think of it as a batucada that plays more harmonies than rhythms

For sure. I encounter a lot of music producers that devote all this time to their gear and to their mixes and their songs are awful because they can’t actually play music properly. Punching in a melody like a monkey is never going to be the same as playing it and having enough knowledge to know which notes and chords work at which times.
