Well one thing that I want to point out is about the lack of variety of powers you mentioned. It is because Bleach is different than other shonen anime. Here to get more power you have to get to know your sword and create a bond. Ichigo got his bankai in 3 days when others get it in 10 years. He forcefully got stronger. Normally, to get real strength you have to get to know your zanpakto well, talk with it, meditate. The longer you are like that, the more powers you get. Shinigamies spend hundreds of years to get there - thats how they have variety of moves and powers. That's why capitans have more options in attacks and powers. And because Ichigo doesn't know Zangetsu that well, doesn't talk with it often and doesn't know about himself, he is stuck only with Getsuga Tensho. That makes bleach different from other shows. You can't 'simply' get stronger just from training, you have to also dedicate yourself to understand yourself and your sword.
@MrMagnetron2 Жыл бұрын
Well, there's also many other more experienced characters that don't have a wide variety of Zanpaktou abilities(not counting other abilities like kido). Ikkaku has one trick, Renji has like 2 or 3 tricks, Byakuya too but his a lot more impactful, Kenpachi has nothing but hack and Slash even after learning of his sword's name, Soi Fon is just 2 stabs=death than a rocket launcher, Komamura is big swings, and a few others.
@mr_dino4222 Жыл бұрын
@@MrMagnetron2 Experience has nothing to do with it, hence why Instar never once brought it up. It's about the BOND with the Zanpakuto, how well you know/understand/accept it. Renji has only a couple techniques because Zabimaru is witholding itself from him and has only had Zabimaru's shikai for under 50 years not the hundred+ of characters who DO have a large number of techniques. Soi Fon barely has anything because to her, Suzumebashi is little more than a tool for execution. Kenpachi has zero techniques because he literally only JUST started hearing Nozarashi's voice at all, there was no time for him to learn anything about it beyond its primary ability, which he's probably not even intersted in going past anyways. Ikkaku is constantly hiding his bankai, so his relationship with Hozukimaru is likely not the best. Heck, even BYAKUYA who actually does have a fair number of techniques doesn't know everything about Senbonzakura and spends time meditating on it and gets a MASSIVE powerup over it. And in Komamura's case, to no small degree, he rejects his own nature, which is tantamount to rejecting Tekken. Your arguments to counter Instar's point really only further serve to prove it.

Seems like you've been watching the series, solely from story and battle perspective. There is so much more in it that just that, because Bleach is exploration of themes and characters. The very abilities that characters possess are basically psysical manifestations of who they are inside. The battles are not just swinging swords, but clashes of the different characters. And there is reason for why Ichigo have only single sword technique. It's because he doesn't know anything about himself, which reflects in his poor ability arsenal.

A lot of stuff gets cut/changed in the anime adaptation. Which is REALLY bad for a series like Bleach that relies on Kubo's subtlety to set up important payoffs later. The reason Ichigo is able to beat Grimmjow so easily when Orihime tells him not to get hurt anymore is because he was significantly stronger than Grimmjow. When he started using his hollowfication, he dominated Grimmjow up until he bodyblocked the projectiles from hitting Orihime, where he sees that she's scared of his hollow powers, so he starts paying less attention to the fight itself, and loses some of his resolve, but when Orihime reassures him that she isn't scared of him, his mind is calmed, and his resolve is strengthened, placing him back to 100%, so he's able to beat Grimmjow. The 69 on Kensei's chest is because his name in Japan is "六車 拳西" which has the kanji "六" in it, which is 6. He is captain of squad 9. He is 6 of 9, thus 69.

So kubo was gonna name it "White" but thought it to be blah and didn't want black for the exact same reason. So he knew he wanted to MAXIMIZE the concept of " light" and "dark" for it was the duality he wanted to convey and so "Bleach" turns black white I.E. the blending of good and evil. Again a show about death, journey we take from birth to death. This is why for us KUBO is incredibly important. To come at the story from the way ymany other's to call it simply " bland" or " surface level" and how no backgrounds are due kubo being bad or lazy or untalented is aggravating. I am a musician, I ve played drums and I love using any and all styles in songs. But the key to a great part is context. I WANT to play fills every moment, be complex and show off. I feel like Orihime was done dirty in the anime. Due to the long fillers and the fact that the subtleties of her character were cut out or not done well, it looks like she's just reduced to a damsel in distress who has no other depth to her character. When I read the manga, I actually really liked her character. From all the people in bleach, Orihime is the one who tends to get him the most. Due Orihime's wanting to protect the one's she loves and her strong feelings for Ichigo, she often is the first one to notice when something is wrong. Because she cares about him, she can't stand to see him get hurt. So she tries to get stronger, but she doesn't have the heart of a warrior and she also doesn't have any remarkable physical feats, due to her having a normal human body. She knows that Ichigo is going to get hurt again, yet she can't do anything about it despite her efforts. Then after the first arrancar raid happened, she starts training with Rukia and has gained a newfound confidence in her abilities. All her luck seems to have run out when she meets ulquiorra of all people. Her newfound confidence is crushed by an overwhelmingly powerful opponent and she really has no other option to oblige and go with him to Hueco Mundo, because it is the only way to protect Ichigo from more conflict (or so she thought). She sacrifices her own life and has no hope of coming back, leaving with an emotional farewell to Ichigo. In Hueco Mundo, we finally see who Orihime is without her normally put on cheerful mask. She's understandably desperate and depressed due to having to leave everyone behind. Then when she hears that Ichigo and the others have come to rescue her, she realizes that she once again couldn't safe Ichigo from upcoming conflict, and then hears that Ichigo has been killed. I don't remember exactly, but when she hears that her friends has come to rescue her, she doesn't look happy or hopeful, but sad. She feels responsible for her friends getting hurt, just to save her. I could go on here but this comment is way too long. Orihime as a character is in an endless struggle to grow stronger to protect those who she loves (basically Ichigo), but can't due to her own powerlessness around the more powerful entities around her. She is a perfect representation how any one of us would fare in the world of Bleach.

There’s a lot of stuff such as foreshadowing and why characters are the way they are, how their abilities and zanpakuto perfectly align their abilities with them as a whole and how each division operates. The reason Yumichika doesn’t use shikai abilities and Ikkaku doesn’t use their Bankai is because it’s frowned upon in the 11th division to win fights via op abilities and such. They mimic their captain out of respect and focus on only honing their raw power and ability. Another great example is Kensei who hates killing coming from tosens division and how is shikai and bankai are beautifully based around his character.

Ichigo's abilities aren't complete 2. The storytelling and themes are often represented by abilities, character traits, clothing, dialogue, backstory, nuance (such as inspiration and external references) By the way it's sounding you haven't considered any of this. At the very least from now on, you should make your intentions clear from the start. Urahara invented the technique and that's how he obtained bankai himself, if I recall correctly. He knew the constraints of the method due to first hand experience, just like how he knew the timeline about the Hōgyoku.
@toshiro-kano Жыл бұрын
Didn't say he learned it because he's the MC. He's saying he learned it as FAST as he did cause he's the MC. Yoruichi herself said even Captains take 10 plus years to learn to use bankai. You're saying that she and urahara are experienced and therefore that's the reason he learns so fast. You really think all the other people that learned bankai didn't have anyone helping them? Including yoruichi and urahara? But it still takes 10+ years for other captains? Goes along with the whole Ichigo spent x amount of time (I think the equivalent of 3 months) in dangai and learns this ultimate technique and even without mugetsu he becomes insanely strong. So you're telling me that some of these captains that have been around for literally a thousand or more years who have been training for probably the vast majority of that weren't able to do the same thing over those thousands of years while this guy is able to do it and essentially three months? LMAO no no it makes sense. Also yoruichi never confirmed to have bankai. She says she doesn't get along with her zanpakuto spirit herself. And bankai is not a requirement for being a captain.
@PiousSlayer Жыл бұрын
toshirokano Didn't Yoruichi say that Urahara used the technique he created to develop his own bankai? Then, Ichigo used the same proven method. So Ichigo learned it fast because of a method developed by Urahara, not because Ichigo was deus ex machina'd because he's the MC. Urahara also said his method had a maximum useful time limit, and if you went beyond it, it was dangerous or pointless at the minimum. It essentially brute forced the Bankai awakening, which meant that Ichigo still lacked the bonding and other things the traditional method provided. It had tradeoffs. Regardless, Old Man Zangetsu was limiting Ichigo's power and growth until a certain point, which also wasn't helpful.
@Kirill-ig6nr Жыл бұрын
@@toshiro-kano Reread chapter 120. Yoruichi told Ichigo that normal bankai training takes 10-20 years on average but thru Urahara's invention to manifest the Zanpukato spirit immediately instead of the lengthy process of drawing it out and that no one else has had Urahara's device except Ichigo, Urahara and Renji which makes the whole point moot. Ichigo is the main character because he has incredible powers, even as a human his speed, strength and awareness were much higher than they should be and it was shown in the first chapter of the series. The whole story wouldn't function if the main character wasn't special in some way because that is what drives the plot.

Inoue is actually a much better character in the manga, for some reason the anime studio decided to make her more stupid and even straight up deleted lines of dialog she had in the manga to flesh out her charterer, witch is why most anime only fans think Inoue is a "flat" character for 80% of her time in the series. She was never represented properly. The anime studio also decided to add in Ichigo x Rukia moments that never existed in the manga, witch pissed off the author of the series Kubo. Kubo said multiple times he never intended Bleach to be a romance series, and alot of fans believe him setting Ichigo up with Inoue was Kubo's way of giving a big fat middle finger to the animation studio for altering his story in the beginning. That's why Inoues "capture" in the Hueco Mundo arc, along with her kissing Ichigo in his sleep kinda seems like it was shoved into the story last second. Because it kinda was just to spite the animation studio for them trying to make Ichigo x Rukia a thing for nearly the entirety of the Soul Society arc when Kubo only wanted them to be friends. Kubo really told the animation studio: "nah fck you, he's with the red head now... and just so you cant edit it out, BOOM! its now a major f-ing plot point for the ENTIRE next arc... Bite me."

Like Kenny asking why do u fight or ichigo battling this inner hallow( his demons) to find answers to who he is he doesn’t know anything about himself he’s growing and unfolding right before us always asking the big questions it’s not just powers being thrown around on screen bleach has the heaviest theme out the big three op being freedom Naruto friendship and bleach being self reflection which a lot of us as human don’t do hardly take time to look deep to find who u are and what ur doing things for.

Whatever the reason for it Ichigo only having one proper move was a completely deliberate choice. In the same author's previous series zombiepowder the main character uses 5 different named techniques in 27 chapters. So it wasn't because he was too lazy to come up with moves. He wanted ichigo to only use one. More evidence for that is whenever ichigo uses a different move he only uses it for one fight and then never again. The random powerups during fights in bleach i feel are a bit unfairly judged too. In the soul society arc they're the most prevalent and least excusable which is ironic considering to anyone who doesn't like the show that's the best arc yet its riddled with issues worse than the others. Anyway take his battle with grimmjow for example. That wasn't a random power up. If you look at the fight before ichigo gets hit by those elbow spikey things grimmjow has he fights completely evenly with grimmjow and even has the upper hand in some moments. At the end of the fight he catches grimmjow's hand and thats supposed to be really shit because he got a BS powerup but near the beginning of the fight he already catches grimmjow's hand another time. So why was he getting his ass beat towards the end of the fight then? First minor reason. He took the elbow spikes to protect orihime. Which injured him. Maybe hearing orihime's voice got the adrenaline pumping and he overcame it for a bit. But the main reason which is impossible to tell in the anime is that ichigo got the first ever DE-power of friendship. When orihime looked afraid of his hollow mask ichigo became weaker. At the end of every chapter in the manga there's one page with a little sketch. For this chapter it was some entity with a hollow mask (representing ichigo) being chained up. Then in the next chapter when orihime gives her motivational speech the end chapter sketch is the entity breaking through the chains. I would address some other points but I know this is already too long for people to bother reading. To sum things up though as others have said the old anime did some honestly dumb as shit decisions. In many aspects it was such a horrible adaptation. And some issues will be resolved in the final arc which is being animated currently. If you have watched the new anime you already know that ichigo's original bankai wasn't a real bankai. So its not so bad he achieved it so quickly. Bleach is, like most others a series riddled with issues. But many of the complaints are either unfair, or are just as prevalent in other series, even the ones people call masterpieces. I'm not sure why it gets given a harder time than the others it's often compared to.

Man I'd forgotten how annoying Inoue was in the Arrancar arc... Good job she picks up again in the Fullbringer and TYBW-arcs... I think maybe Kubo was going for this "They are just angsty teenagers"-approach, which might be why there is a lot of "emo-arcs" and those instances of "characters being annoying" that you mention... Like it was supposed to be really gritty and grimdark with how it would actually look if a bunch of teenagers were thrown into a Shounen-battle-scenario or something... but the anime kinda dragged it out a lot, particularly with Inoue's "Kurosaki-kun"-arc

Loving the video but i had to say, who the fuck thinks anything much less his Vasto Lorde form reveal was bad? I have never seen anyone say anything negative about this fight, by the contrary most praise it as one of the best fight and moments in the entire series and in shonen stories in general, sounds more like you personally dislike Inoue so much that anything that is at all related to her you associate as something bad even though it clearly isn’t. Idk just seems really weird considering the scene makes all the sense int he world, why else would ichigo wake up from death or near death for then? Just because? Because he has a really strong dream or interest in continuing the battle? Of course it would be one of his friends crying in despair for him that would be the catalyst for such a transformation and moment. Otherwise great video, didn’t expect you would enjoy parts of the fillers, even I don’t remember much of them fondly despite being interested in the franchise and world/world-building.

Really love the video! Although Aizen is an interesting character to discuss because I completely disagree with your take on his twist and him knowing everything. To me the twist where everything was planned by him is what makes him one of the best Shonen villains of all time. First, you think it takes away from all of Ichigo's achievements and I simply can't disagree more. The reasoning is the same as to why I don't hate the twist where Naruto and Sasuke are reincarnations of the sons of the Sage of Six Paths like so many do. Neither twist ruins or recontextualize previously amazing scenes. Just like how you can ask "Where was the Sage of Six Paths every time Naruto and Sasuke nearly died before", you can easily ask "Why didn't Aizen step in all the times Ichigo nearly died". Now besides the obvious answer of the mangaka not thinking of it at the time, both twists have built in explanations. In the case of Aizen it's simply, he didn't care. Ichigo was an experiment, to see if Aizen could create an enemy to match his power. If Ichigo died, he'd likely either continue his plans or try again with another person. Even with the information presented in TYBW (won't say what to avoid spoilers for whoever reads it), this still holds up. Aizen did it once, he could do it again. Second is the toll this takes on Ichigo. Between what happened to Uryu in Hueco Mundo while he was in his Vasto Lorde form, Ichigo is having it rough. He has a lot of despair to get over and not a lot of time to do it before Aizen wins. This adds to the tension. Finally, it makes Aizen's defeat at least more satisfying for me. You mentioned how you liked how OP Ichigo was in that moment and I agree, but what makes it better for me is that this is what Aizen wanted and it came back to bite him. While he didn't kill him, Ichigo was his experiment and he still lost because he genuinely thought nobody could beat him. As for him knowing everything, that's what I like. Until he goes god with the hogyoku, Aizen has nothing physically imposing about him. It's his intelligence and the fact that he knew these people for so long that makes him scary. Yeah, him saying 'I know' every other sentence can be annoying but that's up to the person in question. It personally didn't bother me

@abbacuspotter9232 Жыл бұрын
the thing is, ichigo wasnt his "experiment". ichigo (and his mother) was an anomaly beyond his predictions. thats one of the main reasons aizen was so invested in manipulating ichigo's encounters. it was something aizen didnt predict, or plan. he may have planned out a lot of what happened to ichigo, but only because he was interested in something he didnt plan for. hell, even a lot of what aizen did, its not like he planned it step by step ahead of time, he adapted to the situations and data from each instance. part of aizens genius is his adaptability and willingness to accept the unpredictable. which is why he lectured tosen on why white wasnt a failure. if aizen ignored, forgot, or didnt care about ichigo, that would be a mischaracterization of aizen as a person. people dont ever seem to grasp that.

I just finished Bleach, I read the manga and then speed watched the anime (sped up and skipping all filler) and Aizen just felt underdeveloped to me. I saw in another comment someone saying that "the twist isn't a problem because it doesn't recontextualize or change anything" when literally the whole point of a twist IS to do those 2 things. What was the point of it being there if it never ended up changing anything? It was cool, but it just felt kind of pointless. Aizen never felt like a real character to me, we never are given any insight into why he does anything other than "He wants to become god" "He dislikes the way of the world" and "He is bored of being too strong" pretty much, which isn't enough to be a real character, and certainly not the primary antagonist. The scene after he is defeated where Ichigo comments on how Aizen probably let himself be sealed also ended up feeling pointless because we don't know why. We're just being told that was what happened, if Ichigo never said that, we would never know that that was supposed to be implied. I feel many Bleach characters suffer from this problem of not being real characters, they're around for the whole story and have cool fights but they don't develop enough to care about them from a narrative perspective. Basically every character is just a list of traits they must follow at all times and maybe 1 thing that changes during 1 arc, which then just gets added to their list of traits for the rest of the story.
@connorharnage6697 Жыл бұрын
@@dracoblizzard7944 Well it doesn't negatively recontextualize anything was what I was trying to get anything. That's why I used the Naruto example. A lot of people point to that as ruining Naruto's character when it really doesn't and the same apply to Ichigo. It certainly does change things as it only makes Ichigo's identity crisis even worse which makes sense given his arc across the series. Also really? I always thought Aizen was a really well fleshed out character. His main goal is to overthrow the Soul King who he feels doesn't deserve to rule. He can't accept things as they are and even calls Urahara a loser for doing so despite being the smartest person in the Soul Society. I can sorta agree most of the side cast doesn't develop much but I'd also argue that they don't need to. Most of these characters have been alive for hundreds if not thousands of years. At some point there's just no more room to grow. They're sorta like the Hashira or Magic Knight Captains in that regard. Still I found myself enjoying these guys and caring about them more than some of the main characters. I loved seeing the Vizards finally get their chance at payback and actually felt sad when Kumomura had to fight against Tosen. This last part is sorta just sharing my opinion but even characters who don't develop can still be good characters
