Been getting a lot of similar comments and questions, so I'm putting a Frequent Asked Questions thing here. I'll edit it if more come up! FAQ: 1. Q: Why do you hate the 2nd movie?? A: Ya'll, I said in the video that I don't hate this movie, I just didn't vibe with it too much. There were things I didn't understand or things I misinterpreted, but it just didn't click with me on an emotional level like some of the others, and that's okay. 2. Q: What about Mewtwo Returns? A: Mewtwo returns is technically a special episode of the TV anime and not a movie, so I decided not to include it! Even though it is a direct sequel to Mewtwo Strikes Back, I'm only covering the movies in these videos. 3. Q: How could you give my favorite movie a bad score?!?!?! A: It's a ranking video, so there's bound to be some opinions you don't agree with. If you like a movie that I gave a bad score, then that's great! More power to you. :) Don't take my opinions too seriously, cuz I still enjoyed the movies! Like what you wanna like! 4. Q: Aren't Latios and Latias gen 3 Pokémon, not gen 2? A: Yes, when I say they're Gen 2, I mean the gen 2 anime. It was a common trend for the movies to tease a new pokemon coming in the next generation while still being in the previous gen's anime. Latios and Latias in gen 2, Lucario in gen 3, Zoroark in gen 4, etc. 5. Q: You misinterpreted this part!! Are you stupid or something? A: Yea, I am. If I missed something or explained something poorly, feel free to correct me! Just don't be an asshole about it, it's not that serious trust me.

I think you did misinterpret one or two things about the second movie, yeah >->;; Just to clarify them, since A) I didn't see another comment doing so, and B) I'm a nerd on the internet and being needlessly pedantic is in my blood: - The birds broke each other out of prison to handle the bigger threat, not out of any good will towards each other - they went back to fighting once it seemed like they weren't going to be captured anymore. A bit clunky, but it makes sense at least. - The previous 'chosen ones' weren't actually Chosen Ones - they just played that part in the festival, a reenactment of the prophecy and a fairly simple 'go there, get orbs, come back' type of deal. Ash's festival _became_ the real deal after things went sideways; so the prophecy actually happened, the world was actually going to end, etc. - Misty actually contributed a lot to the plot here! She had a number of outstanding moments that really showed off how her character could serve as a foil to- pfft. Nah. Can't do it XD

@Aurelius2142 yea I had received a few comments abt the 2nd movie in particular! but I appreciate u explaining it in a way that doesn't make me feel stupid LOL sadly even with the understood context it probably wouldn't have changed the score much, but then again the scores are already flawed due to one of the categories being ash dying or not, so it's not super deep. thanks for explaining tho!!

@@MarkerDotNet Yeah I think he's mistaken on why the birds "broke eachother out." I think they were just trying to kill eachother again. And I don't think they consciously "worked together" to destroy the airship, I think each of them was just individually more pissed at it than eachother for the moment. They were just violent and territorial.

The third movie hits so much harder when you learn that the writer made the movie basically as a goodbye letter to his daughter. At the time, his health was severely deteriorated and even ended up dictating the script from a hospital bed. He truly thought he was going to die. Fortunately he got better and lived until 2010.

The problem though is that the writer Takeshi Shudo Takeshi was outraged. He felt this went against the story he was originally writing. As a result, he never wrote another Pokémon movie after this because he wasn't at all happy about Molly's mother being alive. The idea was that Molly’s mother has passed away from an unspecified illness, and Molly’s father had been taken by the Unown, leaving Molly alone by herself. Her feelings of loneliness are what ended up creating Entei and is what kicks off the events of the movie. But, if Molly’s mother was alive and just sick as the movie’s ending suggests, why wouldn’t Molly just visit her own mother in the hospital? Why does she have to go after Ash’s mother? So yeah, cannot say I blame him as it undermines the theme of the movie and goes to show that a change like that can ruin the whole movie.
@beech59504 ай бұрын
@SonicLegends Yeah he hated it, but you're making it sound like the entire movie is ruined for the audience just because of a vague scene in the credits. Simmer down a little my dude. The movie is still a masterpiece. Yes it was an awful decision by the replacement writer. That doesn't change the fact that the Shudo poured his heart into this film.

@prayagsuthar98564 ай бұрын
The idea is that, if one bird disappears, the others take over its territory. So after freeing each other from containment, they had a whole messy territorial squabble to deal with afterwards. It was like “un-capture ourselves? check. get back to our islands? che-oh wait, I have to kick these stupid invaders out first GIMME BACK MY ISLAND, NO MY ISLAND, NO MINE, NO MINE 🥊🥊🥊” Which ig is still sibling behavior, but more epic because they’re these epic animals that could destroy the world if they don’t quit it. And there’s also the whole thing in the prophecy about how “if they’re pissed-off, they will not stop (at least until you get all the magic balls)”. Idk how much of that is in the dub.
@christiancinnabars14024 ай бұрын
@prayagsuthar9856 My very unofficial and heavily theoretical interpretation is that the Legendary Birds in the movie are smart enough to know that capturing other beings is wrong, so they team up to escape and blow up the guy's ship in an act of altruism, but are still instinctual enough to go haywire once they see another powerful being near their island. Kind of like how crows are smart enough to do all sorts of selfless acts when taught, but the moment anyone gets too close to their nest and eggs they just lose control and start mobbing. So less so sibling behavior, and more so they're just big corvids that so happen to have world-ending powers.

The only reason that the world was ending in the 2nd movie is because of the main villian dude. He "disturbed the balance of fire, ice, and lightning." The festival was usually just that, a festival. That's also why Ash was the actual choosen one. The other "choosen ones" were just a fun game for the trainers.

Funny considering the Japanese version came out in 1999, which would make sense for the 2nd film considering the year 2000 was originally the end of the world. The fact that pokemon still acknowledges the movie (from releasing a lucario halloween plush with the costume to Ash now having his own lucario with the aura stuff)
@phoenixandy4 ай бұрын
Yeah it’s really crazy how relevant the Lucario movie still is today. From the Halloween Holowear in Pokemon Unite to the Lucario in smash being based on Sir Aaron’s (hence why it can talk, this is bc Lucario was added to smash brawl before Gen 4 came out), the relevance of that movie is insane
@tommymaxey26654 ай бұрын

@@phoenixandy I pretty much only saw the first 4 movies (mewtwo, lugia, celebi, and entei movies) growing up. I later (like college age) went on a "watch the newer ones" spree and watched Lucario first then Latios/Latias, Rayquaza/Deoxys and the B and W ones. The Lucario Movie imo is actaulyl really solid. It kind of drops the "evil villain" trope and just gives the cast a problem to solve with the tree. Imo it added a lot of potential to the lore of the pokemon world, moreso than most of the movies do. I really wish we could get a game set in the past where you play as an Aura Knight like Sir Aaron. Wouldve been a great take for Legends Arceus tbh..

If I remember correctly, "the world will turn to ash" was referencing it would go to ruin if the balance was disturbed and the Ash being the "chosen one" was a misunderstanding, which was the joke. Right time right place type of situation.
@prayagsuthar98564 ай бұрын
This might be interesting: in the original Japanese, the prophecy only refers to a "skilled commander"; and the movie makes it clear that _any_ Trainer would've worked, not just Ash. So the prophecy ends up having a different meaning: in the dub, it coincidentally pointing straight to Ash as the only savior ("the Power of One"); whereas in the original Japanese, he starts fulfilling the prophecy on impulse, and it just so happens to work out exactly as stated, and so he's accidentally burdened himself with seeing it through to the end. A bit more complex in the Japanese version.
@justinarney30504 ай бұрын
@@prayagsuthar9856 Interesting... I didn't know that about the original. Its always neat to learn about how different the dub is.
@MastarNinja2 ай бұрын
Him being mistaken as the "Chosen One" also make sense, since Ash and the other returning characters weren't originally supposed to be in the movie in the first place. That's most likely why the "chosen one" was left vague in the original version like the other commenter said, as it was originally written with the idea that any trainer could have fulfilled the prophecy. Basically, Ash just so happened to be at the right place at the right time.

3:53 That's a common misconception. "The Birth of Mewtwo" was not in the original 1998 version of the movie, rather it was made for the 1999 "Kanzenban" release of the film, made specifically for US audiences. Only the first two mins appeared in the NA home release in March 2000, but the full short released in Japan later that June on a bilingual DVD (which actually had the English dub on it, 1 1/2 years before the US would see it).

Great video! Lotta nostalgia for these first few movies, might need to personally do a rewatch to see how well they hold up.

Oh no, the lottle girl backstory wasnt just "not included on home console releases". It was COMPLETELY non-existent in US releases. I was in Kindergarten when this movie came out, saw it in theatre, and burned my VHS copy to the ground, all my friends obviously loved Pokémon, it was EVERYTHING to us. My first uses of the internet were when I was 9 around 2004 and started spending ALL of my free time on a Pokémon forum, I was the under 12 runner up in the first stop of the 1st VGC tournament in the US, my brother being the winner. I cant explain just how much my entire childhood was defined by Pokémon, it was literally EVERYTHING. And yet we ALL didnt know about the MewTwo backstory in the US, (commonly at the very least, im sure some ppl must have somehow seen a Japanese VHS version or something) until after I was a FULL GROWN ADULT, at the very least 16-18 but maybe even in my early 20s, and the 10 minute or so intro was released as a standalone short movie. That was my and my brother and many of our friends and even many ppl on Pokémon forums and even the subreddit back then first kearned about it. We had no idea it was the original Japanese intro, and it recontextualized our entire lives'conception of the absolutely classic core-memory forming first movie and epic character of MewTwo.

I watched your part 2 first because it was recommended to me after I finished a Lockstin video. Then I had to check out your channel (and watch part 1). I love your humour and your relaxed tone. I hope you find success with the whole KZbin thing, I know it can be daunting. I look forward to part 3 and any future videos, congrats on already having 7k subs, and good luck.

Seems a bit harsh for 2000, you cannot tell me Lugia using Aeroblast wasn’t the absolute coolest attack we’ve ever seen. The battle of the birds was fun and exciting, I also enjoyed Team Rocket wanting to do good for a change.

that's fair! like i said, i was a bit harsh but i didnt hate the movie. and some of it was played up for the video! team rocket joining forces was fun tho, anything with them is great no matter what

I remember the mewtwo backstory from the second mewtwo movie, the one where mewtwo and the clones try to live peacefully on a mountain but team rocket comes and fucks shit up, almost killing mewtwo by electrocution. It should be the movie where brock uses his frying pan... as a drying pan!

Well Team Rocket had a role in the second movie when they helped Ash get the third ball . In the third movie the only thing they do that has some effect is help save Ash from falling to his death a second time

I think Temple of the Sea was the last Pokémon movie I watched as a kid (I still love and play/replay the games though). So many memories with these early era movies.

This era has quite a few movies I'm personally not the biggest fan of or think are just okay, but they are all offset by the BANGERS. Unown, Heroes, Deoxys and Lucario are all 10/10 in my eyes. The second era I kinda call a "dark era" or "safe era" for the movies, but the third era has to be the strongest overall.

I don't know if you were joking but in the first movie battlefield scene it wasn't the backstreet boys, it's a song by the band Blessid Union of Souls called Brother My Brother.

Fun fact: in the German version of the first movie, for some strange reason, the scenes where Mewtwo was meeting this girl, basically all of his backstory, was cut out entirely. I didn't even know these scenes existed until I watched the movie again years later in english for nostalgia reasons.
