You should read Nausicaa the manga. The anime couldn't do it justice. It's an epic ecological masterpiece. Maybe years later, and as a series, just maybe... But the manga is my favourite Miyazake work, yes, despite him being known for animation.

Yeah, it starts as a darker take on the film, then it becomes a morally ambigous anti war story, then it becomes a bonkers philosophical apocalypse. Oh, and it also plants the seeds of Princess Mononoke and Neon Genesis Evangelion 5-10 years before either of these properties actually came out.

dude, it's baffling that you don't get more attention, your videos are so clean and good, a nice balance of analysis and humor, and your editing is top-notch. i especially loved some of the transitions, like making dola throwing the grenade at lupin and jigen, and totoro jumping cutting to the firestorms. v entertaining, keep up the good work :D

I can kind of confirm what you said at the end. I watched Spirited Away with high expectations back then, and didn't quite get it and didn't quite get into it. I later watched it again with a more relaxed state of mind, and it was magical. The same happened with Princess Mononoke for me. Maybe it had something to do with story structure and characters not being quite the same as what we have come to expect from Western (American) (animated) movies.

I'll put them in categories. I just binged them on HBO Max (all but GOTF) so it's still kind of fresh Personal favorites: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (First exposure to Ghibli, loved the epic scale, a little rough around the edges but I enjoyed the "raw" feeling, well written female protagonist, interesting side characters, loved the plot and environmental messages) Spirited Away (Magical film, it deserves all the praise, is not overhyped) Howl's Moving Castle (Plot at times is a bit messy but I enjoyed the fantastical elements, visually very well done and creative) Great: Castle in the Sky (Just a fun adventure film, only problem I have with it is the two main characters are a little undeveloped and at times the pace is a bit rushed) Princess Mononoke (Fleshed out some ideas from Nausicaä, characters are very well written and interesting, probably the most violent out of all the Ghibli films had some more disturbing images which is why I knocked it down one peg-not pleasant to the eyes) Good movie: My Neighbor Totoro (Very campy movie. I'd call it a "vibe" film. Good film to watch on a rainy day to cheer you up. Innocent feeling) Kiki's Delivery Service (Fun film about growing up and venturing out on your own. I don't have much to say about this one. Has a simple story) Porco Rosso (Plane sequences were very fun to watch, underwhelming third act, and doesn't have the most likable protagonist) The Cat Returns (Probably had the most fun with this film, believe it or not, thoroughly enjoyed this one, transported to another world) Ponyo (Liam Neeson did a wonderful job voice acting as the father, visually this one really stands out, I do see the influence of Little Mermaid) Good movie but not my cup of tea: Only Yesterday (I don't like to look back at my childhood memories but I think this one depends on where you are in life) Whisper of the Heart (Probably my favorite of the "slice of life" films they've done, it's a feel-good movie about going after your dreams, very inspirational) The Wind Rises (It's a very well done film, kind of a sad tragic film in a way, contains my least favorite scene of their whole filmography-blood gushing out. I felt a little depressed after watching this one. Interesting dilemma of finding/doing your purpose but having that role have destructive elements) When Marnie was There (Probably one of the weirder films they've done. I enjoyed the plot twist ending. I wasn't a fan of how they depicted their relationship before the plot twist. It was a little too intimate for me) Meh: My Neighbors the Yamadas (It's a fine film just didn't really do anything for me) Arrietty (It's a well-done film, and it's visually striking I just wasn't invested in the smaller-scale story. If you couldn't tell I like epics) From Up on Poppy Hill (Very beautiful visually, didn't like the potential incest plotline) Gets too much hate but I was entertained: Tales from Earthsea (Might be their worst film but I was laughing at how bad it was so it's kind of like The Room. The villain looked like Noodle from Gorillaz so that's a plus) Earwig and the Witch (This film is not as bad as people say it is. I wish they fleshed out the ending more, it just ended abruptly but if you understand what it's based on it's a pretty good adaptation because the author died before they could finish it) Bad movie would not rewatch/I did not like: Ocean Waves (Longest 70 minutes of all life, did not have likable characters and I just didn't care about the teen drama/love triangle) Pom Poko (I did not like this film. It was visually weird at times and the tone was all over the place. Might be my least favorite film of theirs) The Tale of the Princess Kugaya (I did not connect with the protagonist/message of the film. A little too out there for me) Haven't seen: Grave of the Fireflies (I'm going to rent it from my local library. I heard it's like the Schindler's List of animation so I'm expecting a very sad film)

@@wigglermain I'm glad I experienced it and it's very well done. I'd give it an 8/10 or 9/10. It's a film I don't think I'd ever rewatch though. It's not really my cup of tea. I appreciate what they did with it.

You had a very different ranking to the ones I’ve seen - I think you seem more anxious about the world, maybe you find it hard to think of all the life you may have ahead of you. It’s a very 18 year old point of view, as like you said in the video - responsibilities are going to start piling on now. I don’t mean this as an insult, it’s just how your words paint you in my mind. As someone who has always just sort of… endured whatever life has thrown at me, I deeply appreciate the comfort of films like Totoro and Spirited Away, but what I really crave from films is the biggest emotions, something to shake me from the fatigued march to tomorrow that I so often fall into. Something which shows the importance of spirit and acting for ourselves now, not just in the future. I think, looking between your ranking and mine, you may be able to see that difference in personality and perspective. I see it as such an achievement that Ghibli has produced so many amazing films that we may disagree so markedly in our opinions, not by arguing quality, but by explaining our worldviews and experiences and how certain films may resonate with ours. 1. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind 2. Castle in the Sky 3. Howl’s Moving Castle 4. Princess Mononoke 5. Kiki’s Delivery Service 6. Spirited Away 7. My Neighbor Totoro 8. Whisper of the Heart 9. Ponyo 10. Arietty 11. Porco Rosso 12. Only Yesterday

Bruh, you ranked Castle in the Sky and KiKi way too low. Spirited Away is so over hyped. But your stars for Grave of the Fireflies is on point. I'm honestly scared to watch it a second time because of how viscerally sad it made me. I struggled to even tell people about it because of how depressing it is. It deserves it's high status for it's shear power to deliver that emotion.

Hey, thanks for making this video. I haven't watched all of the movies yet, so I'll have to come back to it later. Regarding Nausicaa, have you ever read the manga? Some of your criticisms are "explained" by the fact that only a relatively small section of the entire work was adapted. The exposition, the scope, and the underdeveloped characters - all of these issues are "fixed" to some degree at least in the manga. I strongly recommend it to anyone, especially because of its (female) characters, too!
@AlexBoucher

Thank you! I haven't read the manga but I'm definitely interested in doing that in the future. I know that Miyazaki spent a good chunk of his life working on it and I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to take a look at anything that came out of his head. Thanks for the rec!

My ranking: 23) Earwig And The Witch - 1/10 Terrible animation, terrible characters, terrible storyline. I can't point out one good thing about this movie (slay) 22) My Neighbours The Yamadas - 7/10 It's cute and fun, but a bit boring. Wish they focused on the daughter more. Great animation though. 21) Porco Rosso - 7/10 A great movie but not the genre for me. Porco annoys me. 20) Ocean Waves - 7/10 I actually really liked this movie up until the end. A relatable, relaxed storyline was a great idea for Ghibli. But Rikako was criminally annoying, and I wish the 2 male leads got together, as there was clear chemistry. I love the animation. 19) Howl's Moving Castle - 7/10 I love Calcifer so much. However, so many interesting ideas and the storyline was so confusing in the second half. 18) Tales From Earthsea - 8/10 I get why so many people don't like this movie, but it had me hooked from the beginning to the end. Hort Town is gorgeously animated and an interesting environment. 17) The Cat Returns - 8/10 This movie is so cuteeeee, I love how the storyline feels like something Shizuku from Whisper Of The Heart could've written. But underwhelming for a Ghibli film. 16) Castle In The Sky - 8/10 I love the robots soooooo much. But I can barely remember anything from this film. (also the English dub was traumatic) 15) Only Yesterday - 8/10 A masterpiece. The memories are so simple but effective, and would mean a lot to a lot of people. But I'm still in my teens and so this movie didn't mean much to me, and I found it boring on occasion. 14) Spirited Away - 8/10 I can see why this is called one of the best Ghibli movie, but I couldn't get into it. There were so many characters so I couldn't connect with any of them, and the ending was... rough. But the scene at Zeniba's house was amazing. 13) Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind - 9/10 The first half an hour is a bit boring, but all the following scenes are worth the wait. The ending is one of my favourite scenes in Ghibli history. 12) Pom Poko - 9/10 This is everything. So many incredible scenes that I will remember and love forever. But it's not actually a very good movie- Love the environmental message though. 11) The Secret World Of Arrietty - 10/10 A really enjoyable movie, incredible characters. The ending had me heartbroken, and the animation and soundtrack is incredible. The villain was lacklustre though. 10) Princess Mononoke - 10/10 I love all the characters - Lady Eboshi especially. The storyline, animation and meaning are amazing. Just too much unnecessary gore for me. 9) Ponyo - 10/10 Such a feel good movie. The animation is beyond, Ponyo and Sosuke are so cute, Lisa's driving is so funny, Ponyo's ham, Ponyo expanding the toy boat. I love it all, the soundtrack is great too. 8) Grave Of The Fireflies - 10/10 This movie made me cry so hard, it's incredible how animation can exude so many strong emotions. The scene when they catch the fireflies is beautiful, and them dying the next day hits so hard. Same when he burns his sister after her death. A masterpiece. 7) When Marnie Was There - 10/10 WOW. I felt so much watching this. Anna and Marnie are both great characters, and although I totally shipped them, the twist at the end was very well done. 6) Kiki's Delivery Service - 10/10 Me and Kiki are so similar, so I relate to this movie a lot. Kiki and Ursula is such an amazing friendship, Tombo, Osono, Barsa and Madame Okusama are all so lovable. My favourite Ghibli scene is when Okusama gives Kiki her cake. 5) The Wind Rises - 10/10 Naoko is an icon, and so is Jiro's sister. Jiro himself is an amazing and kind character, and even though I don't like planes, this movie really touched me. 4) The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya - 10/10 This is the best movie ever made. The characters, the soundtrack, the animation, the storyline, the messages but most importantly the emotion. I cried at this more than I cried at Grave Of The Fireflies. The only reason this isn't number 1 is that scene where the 4th option for a husband comes back with a flower, but I don't know who scares him away. It made the movie quite a bit worse, as it really confused me. 3) From Up On Poppy Hill - 10/10 By far Goro's best. Incredible. The storyline is complicated but not confusing, and the messages about dealing with the past is great. Shun and Umi have great chemistry (so happy it wasn't incest), but the best thing about this movie is when she had her dream and remembered her father, and the animation in that scene was spectacular. I also love how she raises the flags every day. 2) My Neighbour Totoro - 10/10 I don't wanna be basic, but this movie is so good. All the characters are amazing, and despite it being really magical, it seems extremely realistic and there is nothing I would change about this movie. The soundtrack is great, and the animation of the sky is so stunning. I love that scene when they're all in the bath together in that windy night. 1) Whisper Of The Heart - 10/10 This movie meant a lot to me, and the joy I feel watching this is unmatched. Baron, Shizuku, Seiji and his grandfather are amazing. The scene where they play Country Roads together is so beautiful, and so is the ending.

I really hope people will watch these and make their own judgements. Don't listen to this kid who is bored with most of them because he grew up on TikTok ;) The best thing about Ghibli movies is their attention to detail and their slow quiet way of telling stories. They're the antithesis of what I'm growing more and more disillusioned with: high action, over the top effects, loud and faced paced movies to cover over their missing or weak plotlines.
