The best thing about Simon being kidnapped was that in the books, they didn't even mean to. Simon got turned into a rat at a party and because the vampires can turn into bats and rats, they just. Assumed it was one of them. And scooped him up. Like "wtf do you MEAN this isn't Brad?!"

Ok so I have this random Cassie Clare knowledge and Ive decided it should be everybody's problem. So, Clary in the books is an avid manga reader and Cassie namedrops this one series called Angel Sanctuary quite a few times. To put it simply, the manga is about the love between our main dude and his sister who are the reincarnations of archangels or something. And it ends with our main dude defeating God with the power of incest (and Lucifer) and getting his happily ever after with his sister. Make of that what you will-

In the books, valentine raised Jace as a kid pretending to be Michael Wayland. When Jace sees Valentine, he recognizes him as his father. Since it was already revealed that Valentine was Clary’s dad, they think they’re siblings. Valentine simply never corrected this for whatever reason I don’t remember. Come to find out, Clary does have a brother named Jonathan, and Jace is not even a Wayland. He’s a Herondale. Valentine was raising both Jace and Jonathan (Clary’s actual brother also called Sebastian) at the same time. Except Valentine had experimented with demon blood on Sebastian and angel blood on Jace. So there was this whole arc with Jace where he was dark and brooding because he thought he had demon blood. Supper annoying and confusing. Totally forgot about once it’s revealed he’s neither a Morgenstern nor a Wayland but a Herondale.

That one time in the books where Clary’s legit brother (who was not Jace) had Jace under a spell, gave Clary Stockholm Syndrome and then suggested that the three of them have a polyamorous relationship. I read this when I was, what, thirteen? As someone who is old enough to remember Cassandra Clare in her fandom days with the plagiarism, her meanness, her involvement in the miss scribe drama and just the toxic culture around the harry potter shipping wars at the time, I can say it was always very difficult for me to separate the book from my experiences with her. So I intentionally didn't read the book as I thought I would be too biased to be fair. But I watched this movie when it came out and felt compelled to read the book to see if it was like I expected it to be. It was. Safe to say I wasn't missing out by not reading it all them years edit: Also will say its absolutely hilarious that CC is bringing out another shadowhunter series called Wicked

After that revelation, I remember thinking at first that this was an excellent love triangle, since Yuki had been pining for Kaname for so long, and Zero pining for Yuki but feeling unworthy of her because of him being a vampire. The tables were now fully turned with Kaname (seemingly) being forever out of Yuki's grasp due to being her brother, and Zero possibly also being out of her grasp by being absolutely disgusted by learning she had been what he most despised all along. What is also later explained in the books, is that Clary (due to her having more angel blood than other shadowhunters since her father experimented on her when she was still in her mother's womb) has the ability to create and recall ancient runes. The reason why her ability is so special is because her runes are not written in the Gray Book, which has all the runes that were believed to be the only ones the shadowhunters were able to use. So, she is only able to stop the temporary flow of time not because that is her power specifically but due to her creating her own runes that enable her so. In addition to that Jace also has some more special abilities because just like Clary he has more angel blood than the others but I don't remember to be honest

When Kennie was talking about how she didn’t care at all about the people in TMI’s love triangle I immediately thought of The Infernal Devices, which is the prequel series to TMI that has a MUCH better love triangle and just,,, love story in general. But it doesn’t get nearly the amount of attention that The Mortal Instruments does which kinda sucks since I think people would like it a lot more

It's the literal "magical negro" trope. They do this to blk people but usually it's blk people who don't have actual supernatural powers but are there solely to lead the white protagonist with wisdom and some sort of parental guidance. Other POC's have this trope too ,but it's rampant in white stories that feature a blk character.

I only read the first three books way back in middle school/early high school, but the incest thing was so funny, because I remember it being pretty one sided. Clary was trying to let go and move on, but Jace spent the whole book and a half where he thought they were related insisting that they could just run away somewhere that no one knew that. Then you find out that they weren't related, but Valentine had abducted Jace and named him after Clary's actual secret brother, who's been disguised as someone else's brother, BUT her secret brother also wants to bone her seemingly JUST to take her away from Jace, with whom he feels he has a rivalry??? Honestly, these books were pure soap opera trash and I'm always a little tempted to go back to them, just for that. I also distinctly remember Izzy being jealous of Clary for being 'pixie-like', because Izzy sees herself as too tall and willowy, and at some point gives Clary one of her tank tops to wear as a dress. Honestly, finding out these books were based on Cassandra Clare's plagiarized Harry Potter fanfics wasn't even supersizing. (I say this as a prolific fanfiction reader: some of it is scarring.)

This movie suffered from what I like to call “Percy Jackson syndrome.” I’m like 75% sure that Cassandra Clare had little to no input with what the directors and producers did to her story; like Rick Riordan had no input over the PJ films. (To be fair, the Percy Jackson books are MUCH better written than Mortal Instruments in my opinion, but the point still stands). The studio was pretty much just concerned about making money, so they kept vaguely the same story beats with NONE of the nuance (not that there was a whole lot of that in TMI to begin with, but there was some and the dialogue in the books was at least passable) or character development or…character, really. They also attempted to shove some things that happen in later books into the first movie WHILE cutting a lot of things that happen in the first book, much like the Sea of Monsters film. Though in Sea of Monsters they did it because they KNEW they weren’t getting any more movies and they wanted to wrap up the entire series in the second installment, while in this movie they really seemed to think that they were gonna get at least one more. As a result, this movie ends up feeling very…generic, like a washed-out version of the book. Even with some good actors in there (Robert Sheehan is a FANTASTIC actor, but just like Logan Lerman in Percy Jackson no amount of acting chops can make up for terrible writing) it just doesn’t manage to make up the difference. Movies like this are why I’m thankful they never adapted series like PC Cast’s House of Night (which I attempted to reread as an actual adult recently and are god awful, Zoe Redbird is one of the worst YA protagonists I have EVER had the misfortune of reading, and one of my guilty pleasure reads is the fucking SELECTION series) or Melissa de la Cruz’s Blue Bloods into films. Sadly, if books are written for a teenage audience, most of the time a studio will just assume kids are stupid and don’t know what good media is and phone it in to make a quick buck.

My brother said he was reading the first book and I got excited and was going over my favorite moments to which he then replied to me, "That didn't happen". @@ThexDynastxQueen bruh, it's incest GALORE with a plot so convoluted idk how I understood any of it. So the main girls mom(Juri) was in a love triangle with her BIOLOGICAL brothers Rido and Haruka and she ended up choosing Haruka. Years later the daughter(Yuki) falls for her "not known at the time" brother kaname, and another dude named Zero who she grew up with. We then find out that her uncle Rido killed her brother(kaname 2.0) and replaced his soul with their family ancestor(kaname 1.0), who was apart of the original Kurans(her family line), for power. THEN after a lot of mellow drama she ends up with Zero because kaname 1.0 was being dramatic and sacrificed himself, and left her alone with their kid. A 1000 years later after having another kid with Zero, he dies, and Yuki takes her children to "Kaname's" comatose body(a whole other story) to wake him up. She does this by sacrificing herself and "Kaname" wakes up as a human with no recollection of any of the past ish he did and is left with Yuki's two kids. Like what in the Freudian Fuckery was vampire knight???? Bruh, that's her brothers body with her ancestor inside it that she slept with MULTIPLE TIMES. I mostly read and still love the series due to Magnus, Alec, Simon, Izzy, and Chairman Meow. To me, Clary and Jace were obviously not going to be siblings by the end because as a reader, I just knew. He was too angel like to be a demon blooded brother. Knowing that was the only reason I kept reading… i also wanted Simon to finally be happy, poor boy. We all know that the main reason why the movie was bad is because they removed the rat scene! Honestly I still really love the whole Shadowhunter universe. Reading Simon’s and Magnus’ side novels was really fun. I think the monsters and world building are cool. I have the Codex (a guide to the shadowhunter world) and in it they put drawings of the monsters which are both gross and sick. TID will forever be amazing and Magnus the center of my heart. Over all, I just ignore Jace, and mostly Clary, because they are far from the reason why I love the shadowhunter universe. Ps. The mortal cup makes more shadowhunters, the sword makes you tell the truth, and the mirror, without spoiling, is a summoning gate for the angel, Raziel, when you summon him with all the Mortal instruments, sword, cup, and mirror. Also Hodge was cursed to stay in the institute as a punishment for being a henchman of Valentines. In the book it was never a secret. The movie did such a horrible job describing the story that listening to your summary pains me due to the inaccuracies. I only know better due to the books. Don’t get me wrong, you did great describing the nonsensical movie.

Someone pointed out that Valentine making Jace think they were siblings was an abuse tactic. He had already drilled into Jace that he was unworthy of love and that he made everything worse. By making Jace think he had fallen in love with his sister, he was just reinforcing these beliefs and trying to get Jace to realign himself with Valentine because of his own self-hatred. So the whole thing was never about incest but abuse at the hands of a parental figure.

It's been a while since I read the books, but rest assured! Clary actually does have a brother that has feelings for her. He was raised by Valentine like Jace but is very demon-y, a psychopath, and a manipulative bitch. When we first meet him he's undercover in the Shadowhunter capital and Jace and Clary still think they're siblings, so Sebastian (that's his name btw) decides to make Jace jealous by hitting on Clary because he's salty that Valentine loved Jace more. He then summons a demon army inside the city and kills a child (the baby brother of the other two Shadowhunter teens in the institute). And this is based on Cassandra Clare's Draco x Ginny fanfiction, and also her Ron x Ginny fanfiction. So yeah. The retcon incest was definitely the publishing company going "we can't publish incest, Cassandra, tone it down". The prequel (the infernal devices) is kinda good though. No incest! Just shapeshifting and angst in late 19th century London.

I actually started watching the books when I was in middle school (2013 was when I was still in middle school) and I remembered that I wanted to read TMI City of Bones before I went to see the movie. After asking my mom, she said that she would get it for me. One day she told me that she doesn't think that I would feel comfortable reading it so she never bought me the book. 13 year old me was confused as to why she wouldn't get me the book so I borrowed the book from my school's library and read the whole thing within two days. At the time I actually really liked it and I was even laughing at some parts of the book. When it got to the incest part, I was more shocked than anything and I didn't want to read any more in the series until a few months later I found out that it was a lie and I was curious how it was going to play out so I ended up asking my mom to buy me the box set and I still liked the series. What made me uncomfortable was Sebastian. Throw that whole man away. but lets just say that I am still traumatized by that reveal to the point where when I watched vampire knight for the first time last year and when the incest reveal happened, I was basically so uncomfortable that I didn't want to watch it anymore because it made me remember when I was reading TMI for the first time and I felt very bad that I was shipping the two main characters until this point and finding out that they're siblings and a whole lot of just NOPE. So the movie did actually change a bunch of stuff, for one thing Clary doesn't start drAwiNg rUnes nor did she ever have an obsessive habit of doing so, but she just starts seeing weird things and people around her that seem nearly/not really there, and those people are Shadowhunters/Downworlders that she is gradually developing the sight for. At the club she attempts to stop Jace from killing the guy. Also Lily Collins portrays her with such a wide eyed frenzied energy, in the book Clary is a lot calmer and doesn't have those anxiety attacks whenever she sees something lol. She also hides most of it from Simon? And in the book she kills the demon with one of the devices she took from Jace, but in the movie she doesn't meet Jace at all until he saves her. In the book Jace and Clary have a whole dynamic where they're both snarky and rude to each other but i guess they omit that completely in the movie. Like 15:38 is an actual scene in the book but it's delivered AS A JOKE. After that point I think they changed the rest of the plot lmao

Even though i have conflicted feelings towards the series, the reason why the movie felt like a shit(ty)show of epic proportions to me is the fact that the movie producers cherry-picked essential plot devices, threw everything else on the wayside and attempted to connect the frayed ends together to make an abomination of a movie. To be frank, Clairy only had 1 power manifest in the first movie(last time I checked). And they COMPLETELY redid Luke and wrote him as a pack member before Clairy's mother, Jocelyn was abducted. In the original series, he was a lone wolf and only took over the nearest pack to have more manpower to fight against valentine. I could go for days on how they screwed up the technical parts of the series.

I don't recall if they ever actually say if he was a part of the pack before Jocelyn was abducted in the movie though? 🤔 I thought they left it as ambiguous as it was in the books. We don't initially know, in the books, if he was always a part of the pack he shows up with or not...until later on, when Luke explains that's why he mysteriously disappeared for a while, because he had to essentially go steal a pack so he could be more helpful.

I was so obsessed with the mortal instruments series when they came out, and still love the other works in the franchise, (especially The Infernal Devices, so in love with both those boys)... I remember HATING this movie so much. I was so offended when someone who knew i liked the books asked if I wanted to watch it. I reread the first 3 books of the Mortal Instruments and they were definitely not as good as I remember. Reading them in the order they came out, the world building and Clare's writing solidified naturally over time, but going back to the beginning, there's a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense. Like, Simon gets introduced with an extra sibling that is never mentioned again in any of her other books. Anyway, in the books, after it's revealed that Jace ISNT Clary's brother it turns out she DOES have a brother (honestly one of my favorite characters ngl) who is part demon, and therefore "cant understand love" (personally i think he was just incredibly abused as a child and it could have been explored better) and in his search for "love" that he can't understand, he attempts to r*pe Clary, bc "he does understand sex." She gets away or whatever but... Idk I still have a soft spot for Cassandra Clare's writings, but she was definitely pushing the wrong kinds of boundaries in the Mortal Instruments. Subsequent series in the same universe are better in my opinion, but the whole concept of Shadowhunders being isolated from the rest of society already invites a lot of incestuous connotation, which is even pointed at in the books at one point.
