In my first France travel video, I share my first impressions of travelling in France in winter. After taking the channel tunnel from the UK to France, I need to embark on driving in France for the first time and driving on the opposite side of the road. It's something I've been nervous about for months in the lead-up to this trip and it felt very strange at first.
After a few hairy moments while driving, I finally make it to the historical city of Arras in northern France and spend the day visiting French bakeries, fromangeries and exploring the fascinating history of this beautiful French city. Since I brought my campervan to France, I experience my first ever night in a French motorhome aire.
If you are planning on travelling to France with a campervan or without, I hope this France travel vlog gives you an insight into what travelling France is like!

WHO AM I?
If we haven't met before... Hi, I'm Ruth 👋 and I recently bought a campervan to travel my home country of Scotland after living overseas for 12 years. I’ve hardly seen anything or been anywhere in Scotland and now is the time to change that!

One thing we've learned when traveling in France, if you buy a baguette, always buy 2. One for the meal when you get back to your van and the other one for the journey back to the van.

Yes, it’s always been a mystery how the French can stay so slim with all those wonderful patisseries! I read somewhere that they keep to small portions for every meal. I absolutely adore the French patisseries, no one else can make cakes like the French chefs. There are poor copies in the UK. When we go to France we always seek out the nearest bakery, the cakes are just out of this world.

Nice video ! It's funny to see France from your eyes and understand that my country can feel exotic even for our fellow neighbors from across the Channel. You got the trick : a Bonjour and a few words like "s'il vous plait" and "merci" will (nearly, there are a** h***es in every country..) always get you friendly interactions.

@@chema3038 Andalusia was the last part of Moorish Spain (Al-Andalus) to be re-conquered by Isabela and Ferdinand in 1492. So if any region of Spain has a claim to "Arabic" food, this would be the place. Ruth reports it tastes good, which in my book is more important than what it's called. So all's good.

@@chema3038 Yes, you make a good point. I hadn"t thought it out that far. Falafel is often a street food across the Near East, could it be that in Spain it's been added to the tapas menu? What a lovely mish-mash the world is, with everyone borrowing from each other. Cheers!

Arras was the first place we stayed on our first trip to France. We found a campsite with fishing lake, a pizza oven and a small bar with a bakery a short walk away. The son had taken it over for his parents and over the years he upgraded it adding a restaurant, shower block, washing machines. We used to head there every year as our first stop off point as it was close to Calais. We gave him a huge Welsh flag and when we went the following year, it was hanging in bar. Good times. I can’t wait for your vlog next week - from the teaser, it will evoke even more memories.

Hi Ruth, I know the feeling of driving on the wrong side of the road, came to France today on a business trip for the week. Took me a bit of time to get use to driving from Charles de Gaulle airport to Normandy especially when I couldn’t get my Google maps working through the hired cars radio, didn’t help the radio settings being in French and not used French since I was at school many years ago but managed to change it to English. before coming I downloaded the offline maps for around Paris to Normandy in case I lost my signal or my data package didn’t activate correctly until I could get it working. Try downloading offline maps on google maps you can do more than one location as it can help if you lose your signal on your phone. I do the same back home in Scotland as well especially if I’m going somewhere where the phone signal is patch like in some areas of the highlands and Shetland.

Came across your vlogs about travelling down through England and in to France by chance. Very enjoyable and informative. I had that data problem too and it caused problems with using the paris metro app. Looking forward to seeing more of your travels.

@ruthaisling I'm no expert Ruth but as I say I am with giffgaff which uses O2 signals but I'm using pay as you go. Most times it has been very good but just in my case I did have that snag in France re data...solved quickly by getting a French data simcard plus my phone is dual sim ...ie can take 2 sim cards giving greater flexibility. Another little point you refer to the limitations imposed post brexit on uk passport holders. Having an Irish passport is very useful as we retain the same eu travel and settlement rights as before. I assume you have no Irish family connections? I know the applications from the UK for Irish passports has increased dramatically with people aserting their Irish ancestry.

I like Arras very much and have visited a few times. Lovely to see it in your video. Well done for having some basic French before you headed over, makes all the difference, especially when you get a bit further south. Hint on the driving. My first few trips over to Europe I drove resting my elbow on the ledge at the bottom of the window. Stopped me wandering over to the wrong side of the road. I am looking forward to the rest of this series on France. M

Ruth, looks like you’re having a great time. I’m so jealous because northern France is a favourite destination of mine. Although I’m British I love driving in Europe because the traffic is usually lighter than at home and, in my experience, other drivers will give you space when they see your UK number plate😁 The boulangeries are a proper treat but if you want something a bit more healthy look out for the Prix Fixee menus in cafes. They offer a 3 course lunch at reasonable cost and as they are aimed at the locals (the French don’t rush lunch - so civilised) they are tasty and nutritious.

Have a look at getting a toll card which you place on your windscreen. Save you stretching over at tolls having to pay from your left window. The toll card also means you do not need to stop

I haven't been to France yet but I have been to Noumea , New Caledonia in the South Pacific so I understand your fascination with food and bakeries. I spent 2 days walking and eating the lovely French food. I figured I was walking so it was OK to have more than one pastry.......many more...yum!!!! Ruth I'm really enjoying your channel. I enjoyed learning how the channel tunnel worked. It was only a concept when I lived in London on my big O.E (overseas experience) in 1974/76. Plus joining the common market was just a referendum 1975. Lot of changing history, so thanks for sharing and updates on changing history, for me. I feel old now LOL! Bon Chance! with your travels and stay safe.

Lovely video Ruth. It was like being on the journey with you and experiencing a bit of France. The French Aires are great aren't they? We should do them over in the UK, don't you think?

Hi Ruth, really enjoyed this video and as always passion from you comes across whenever you explore new places. In terms of park-ups for Ernie and all other campers / motor homes Europe is way ahead of Britain. The service and acceptance ( of this holidaying or lifestyle)is on another level on the continent. Loved the part about the local food, like yourself I’d be in every bakery 🧁 trying out the tasty treats. I would need to plenty of exercise to burn off the calories 😉😂. Have a great week, looking forward to your next video. 😊x

In honour of your video we had cafe avec pain au chocolat while watching (but I'm sure your pastries were WAY better). The cheese selection. I'd have been in heaven. I need to visit France again. You did a great job driving on the opposite side. Just remember to breathe. :) And of course, so nice to see you have a special date for Valentine's. Your soul mate perhaps.
