The importance of understanding how what goes into your body effects you cannot be understated. Me and my family went vegan when I was 15 and I had only a vague idea that not eating animal products was better than my new diet, even though that was pretty much the only change. We still kept eating processed foods with lots of saturated fats and sweets. And I was gaining weight every year. It wasn't until I decided to look into nutrition by myself that I realised the importance of unprocessed foods as well as regular exercise. My family still thinks that I'm under-eating and starving myself by eating "plain" low-fat foods, despite me having a stable and normal weight for 3 years since the initial weight loss.

"It's very restrictive." is what you said towards the end of the video. Honestly it's not restrictive because the variety of vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds is way higher then the handful of common meat, dairy and eggs that people eat. Restrictive is not the right word. Challenging works better because at first it is a challenge to understand how to shift to plant based vegan, but once you know how to do it, it becomes second nature. I come from a background of eating disorders, and this way of life was totally liberating. Food really can be simple :)
@exoticspeedefy79164 жыл бұрын
That depends. Not everyone can tolerate large amounts of fiber, in fact because its indigestable for humans, and most people are sensitive to the antinutrients such as lectins, and the high amounts of oxcelates in most vegetables. Not saying we shouldn't eat vegetables but they have their place in moderation just like meat. Vegetables, canola oil, soybean oils ect, all nuts and grains, are high in polyunsaturated fats which are not that good for us since they oxidize verry easily and have a higher omega6 to omega3 ratio.. omega 6s which are said to be pro inflammatory... unlike fish which is caught fresh and naturally higher in omega 3s.. I know many people who are vegan but not doing so well, and others that went vegetarian instead. Food choice is as much about what is available to be eaten as it is about what a species evolved to eat. And just as fruits ripen, leaves flush and flowers bloom predictably at different times of the year, foods available to our ancestors varied over deep time as the world changed around them from warm and wet to cool and dry and back again. Those changes are what drove our evolution, meat was largely included
@slaynprey4 жыл бұрын
@@exoticspeedefy7916 No body who doesn't already know this will listen. Its too easy for them to ignore this sort of information and never step back to look at things with a more scientific perspective. When they're taking about how unnatural our diets and stuff are ask them if they even realize that 95%+ of the fruits/vegetables didn't even exist in their current form until humans artificially selected them, most if it has to be transported from across the world. And where would they have gotten there fruits/vegetables thousands of years ago in the middle of winter? Vegans are so focused on preparing their food and what they're going to put in their body and they're so invested in this lifestyle that its like their religion. @@margf1128 I know this continuing off topic from the original comment, but this is an interesting debate! Because among vegans there's a debate about beekeeping. Some ppl think it's animal cruelty and some don't. & it's interesting because some ppl are vegan for reasons that have nothing to do with animal cruelty, it's lifestyle, or environmental. I kinda hope to hear in this thread from more vegans on where they stand on the divide.

@@drunkvegangal8089 Since im a researcher in populations genetics and i know even more experienced people on other fields what i said is consistent with data. Humans and their ancestors have been getting around 50+% of their calories from meat for over 1 million years. That only changed about 10,000 years ago when we started doing agriculture. Natural diet does not imply longer life expectancy though the same way medicine can make you live longer even though its "unnatural". Chicken and Fish are associated with lower mortality rate when adjusted for macros, exercise etc etc.
@D19DMO128D Жыл бұрын
@@drunkvegangal8089 I sent a mix of recent and some older studies since there weren't any recent studies refuting them. All the following studies show that from Homo erectus to Paleolithic humans, to modern hunter gatherers and even Neanderthals as an extra, all of them had meat heavy diets. Keep in mind that in recent years hunter gatherers started eating domesticated plants due to influence from neighboring farmers and hunting has become harder due to obvious reasons so dont think that the ones who eat corn are relevant. Imagine you were relying on a diet before agriculture. What are you going to rely on? Obviously meat, 50-60% of your calories from meat and the rest from wild fruit, honey etc. Study title:: The paradoxical nature of hunter-gatherer diets: meat-based, yet non-atherogenic "In this review we have analyzed the 13 known quantitative dietary studies of HG and demonstrate that animal food actually provided the dominant (65%) energy source, while gathered plant foods comprised the remainder (35%)." Study title: Associations of Processed Meat, Unprocessed Red Meat, Poultry, or Fish Intake With Incident Cardiovascular Disease and All-Cause Mortality "Each additional 2 servings of poultry consumed per week was not significantly associated with all-cause mortality (HR, 0.99 [95% CI, 0.97-1.02]; 30-year ARD, −0.28% [95% CI, −1.00% to 0.44%]). Each additional 2 servings of fish consumed per week was not significantly associated with all-cause mortality (HR, 0.99 [95% CI, 0.97-1.01]; 30-year ARD, −0.34% [95% CI, −0.88% to 0.20%])." Study title: Exploring late Paleolithic and Mesolithic diet in the Eastern Alpine region of Italy through multiple proxies: The study is on 3 individuals in Italy from 18,000 years ago Conclusion: Isotopic results indicate that all individuals likely relied on both terrestrial and freshwater animal proteins. According to this comparative information, the macrowear patterns of the two Italian Upper Paleolithic and one Late Mesolithic individuals suggest a diet mainly based on meat with only a moderate intake of plant foods. Study title: A Neandertal dietary conundrum: Insights provided by tooth enamel Zn isotopes from Gabasa, Spain: Concluding Remarks: Neandertal isotope values represent an extreme in carnivore trophic levels, and Iberian Neandertals appear to be no exception. Meat consumption is supported by both the zooarcheological data at Gabasa and δ66Znenamel analysis. Study title: Evolutionary basis for the human diet: consequences for human health Homo erectus had increased body size, greater hunting skills, a diet rich in meat, control of fire and understanding about cooking food, and moved from woodland to savannah. Their diet shifted towards grain-based foods about 100 kyr ago, and settled agriculture developed about 10 kyr ago. This pattern remains for many populations to this day and provides important insights into current burden of lifestyle diseases.

Yeah sure, wanna know why a small procentage of the world population commits to your cult? Its because it's hard to do and doing one thing wrong can cause your death over a prolonged period, it's unhealthy as fuck, and it makes it very unattractive to ordinary people which is why you vegans are a small procentage of the population, it's why vegetarianism is a way bigger procentage of the population because those people decide themselves on what to eat and what not to eat, basically limiting themselves on certain things such as eating the fish but not eating the steak, and trying to stick to vegan foods as much as possible but still always sliding that fish or steak down their mouths every once in a while. This is way more healthy than true vegan.

That being said, I physically could look at my improvement on paper and compare it to before I went plant based. Hi there, I do recommend being a sceptic and look up things for yourself, and you will find out that the diet i will share with you is actually for your own good e.g processed meats are classified as carcinogenic to humans in Group 1, which is as bad as it can get, where as plant foods are classified as anti-cancer foods. I do encourage to adopt (even if it means making small changes here and there) a well-planned, organic, unrefined and untempered with vegan diet (consuming raw plant foods where possible so as not to denature or destroy the life-forces and enzymatic activities beneficial to the human system. If disagreeing on this matter, please take some steamed carrots, plant them and see if they will grow; if not, it is because they are 'dead' plant food that cannot benefit one's 'living' cells) consisting of organic fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds and whole grains as it is the best diet to provide mankind with ultimate health and longevity. I do not even see a reason to use pharmaceutical supplements e.g Vitamin D is obtainable from organic chestnut mushrooms (UV exposed) and sun-dried mushrooms with the exception of the body's ability to make it (and store it for future use) when exposed to the sun; Iron from organic beets; Zinc from organic cashew nuts; potassium and magnesium from organic bananas; Omega 3 Fatty Acids (beneficial for the brain) from organic walnuts and pecans (looks like the brain and targets it). Please avoid factory produced meat alternatives whose chief ingredient can be 'soy' and may contain preservatives as well as additives (e.g Vinegar, a corrosive agent). Food toxicity and nutrient deficiency (e.g white bread, white rice and white sugar) are a deadly combination as one is hindering the body's building materials needed to action healing whilst at the same time taxing the system with more toxic stuff, thus bringing about disease and possibly even an early death. Best wishes 💙💙💙

Arhu yeah? Show us some scientific studies that claim that. It’s a common known fact, our digestive tract takes a long time to digest and absorb meat, especially beef and pork. Our digestive tracts are not optimally designed to digest meat like pure carnivores. We are omnivores, that means we can survive on it if we need it, but that doesn’t mean you should eat it in abundance. It’s a survival mechanism. This is why you don’t see certain animal species in certain areas of the world, they haven’t evolved to be able to live off the land anywhere. This includes animals that are herbivores and frugivores, they are isolated pockets. Meat tots and ferments in our digestive tract, because it is too long, and does not have effective digestive enzymes to process it properly. Go educate yourself. Greetings, a non vegan who doesn’t talk bullshit.

I'm sorry, but this video is bad information. Here is a comment I'm posting around, because this channel has LIED to you: This is a propaganda video if you couldn't tell, there's wayyy too much wrong here: 1) What did he eat before this? It could have been literally anything because they didn't even tell us. I'll presume: Matt, the butter diet isn't healthy. It's no wonder your numbers increased. If you wanna do keto, do it right, my friend. 2) That bodybuilder is on steroids... 3) The vegan with the fruit claimed that fat increases insulin resistance. Okay, by how much? Is it all fats that do that? Why don't you mention the fats that lower insulin resistance? Not to mention, all I had to do was a quick Google search to see that the first result I got was from a vegan blog. Ask a vegan, you'll get nothing but confirmation bias... Not to mention I've been doing the ketogenic diet for the last 3 damn years, and I know what high insulin resistance feels like from experience. So either the answer isn't relevant or... it's BS! Contradictory source: www.healthline.com/nutrition/14-ways-to-lower-insulin 4) There are multiple statistics I have found [not a single solid source] that have wildly different numbers for how many vegans there actually are in the US, and they chose the good stat. Here's a direct contradiction, from THIS YEAR (2020) and FROM A VEGAN source.... AND LITERALLY THE FIRST GOOGLE RESULT: veganbits.com/vegan-demographics/ You've been lied to. As a non-vegan, this video has made me skeptical that they're paid off by a corporation. Do I believe that? Not really... but why with all the shadiness? It's disgusting and clearly not well thought-out... They did go to experts on both sides of the issue, sure, but they didn't cross-examine the actual points that they made.

@forcryinoutloud4 жыл бұрын
As a vegan, yes, definite increase in cost - however the biggest increase is if you buy vegan specific foods such as vegan cheese, or vegan pizza etc. as opposed to just straight up plant based foods and accidentally vegan products. You can definitely plan out your shopping to keep the costs down though, by not buying the vegan specific products (because you can make plenty of the products yourself, for cheaper - about the only thing you're probably going to want to buy and not make is the vegan cheese, and obviously a non-dairy milk if you want a "milk" product - but even then, both of those things can also be made at home if you so choose). I make my own fake parm, but buy the fake moz/cheddar, and various almond milks that I use. I buy a couple packs of Beyond Meat that is expensive, but also can be used to make, for example, a pot of a spaghetti sauce (or a couple of lasagna) that I can freeze into smaller batches (or in the case of the lasagna cut into portion sizes) that lasts quite a few meals. So while the initial bill might be more - if you plan, it can create large numbers of meals that you can freeze and have to just pull out and heat up for 'x' number of days/weeks, depending on what you make.
@tehDmez4 жыл бұрын
There's lots of things that you can buy in bulk and it's very cost effective, your various grains/legumes can be very cost efficient in your diet, especially if you buy things like dried beans and soak them yourself instead of using canned alternatives. However the "vegan" specific products can get quite costly. The typical "fake" meats that you can buy (Yves, Beyond Meat, etc etc) are very costly. Fresh produce can also be a bit on the costly side, but if you shop seasonal vegetables that's really easy to avoid. Overall swapping to vegetarian I haven't noticed much of a cost difference, and I'm still very new to this lifestyle and could easily be doing it way more cost efficient.
@Panicthescaredycat4 жыл бұрын
I've done the diet myself.. and honestly IF you're cooking things yourself instead of buying things premade... There's only a slight increase... If you paid $50 before, you'll pay $60-$65 difference... SOMETIMES, you end up even finding cheaper options that are really good believe it or not!! But like I said, it all depends on you.

@@responsiblecuisine4974 You do realize, do you not, that vegetables of the early 1900's were significantly more nutritious than they are today. It's been suggested that the plowing up of the land on mass mega monocrop farms is reducing the soil nutrients as well as causing wind erosion of the nutrient-rich soil each fall. Unlike small farms of a century or more ago that were fertilized by organic cow poop, modern farms are fertilized by chemical fertilizers from sources like Monsanto, DuPont and Bayer, not to mention 1) sprayed with chemical pesticides and 2) more and more GMO seeds to grow those veggies with. While it's been claimed that we won't be able to feed the planet's population of 2070 if we don't get rid of the cows, I suspect that no human will be able to eat enough of the future's nutrition-devalued vegetables to stay healthy, anyway.

A vegan diet can be overwhelming at first, especially when you switch overnight, but it gets way easier with time. I haven't eaten animal products in almost 6 years and I literally don't think about anymore because I know by now what works and what doesn't. If you switch to a vegan diet overnight it'll be really hard tbh. If people want to try, I think doing it in small steps would be easier. Like being vegan for just one meal, or for one day. & you can slowly start replacing the animal products with vegan products (that way it isn't a huge adjustment in your budget and eating habits all at once).

My only suggestion is to maybe add a few eggs once or twice a month, and maybe a fish. You do not have to go full on meat eater... My only question is really is why? Are you doing this diet because of ethical reasons or diet reason. If its ethical, then maybe ponder if what you are doing is really helping the cause. Or is this more of a society ( doing it because A': no one in your area is vegan B: because you want to belong to that group) vegan. It's a GOOD thing that your HDL decreased because your LDL also decreased. It's a misconception that you need to always have a high HDL because when you have a low LDL, HDL (which busses out LDL cholesterol out of the bloodstream) automatically decreases because it has little use at that point. But yes, everyone ought to prioritize omega-3 rich foods, and in the case of vegans that would be things like walnuts, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds.

@y3ldarb24 жыл бұрын
@@dittery There is plenty of proof. It's just that as you age, the conversion rate of ALA to DHA decreases (which is probably what you heard about), which is why everyone (including non-vegans) should supplement with algae-based DHA. Don't use fish oil, since it is now known that they have no effect on heart health, and the heavy metals normally present in fish are also present in fish oil supplements. Furthermore, the effect that fishing has on the environment and the ocean's population should be taken into account.

It makes sense that it takes some weeks to get used to, because you're taught to live and act in a specific way and then suddenly change that behavior. Regardless of the hassle at first, it is definitely the future for us as a species and as a planet. If you look at the health, environmental and ethical benefits of veganism and the resources that we have on this planet, there is just no way around it. I think that combined with innovative technologies, such as lab grown meats, we can and will transition in the near future (50-100 years).

I feel that the biggest push for veganism will come when people know how to make tasty vegan dishes. For example - India has the most delicious vegetarian dishes and that's why the biggest vegetarian population base. Even the non-vegetarians here do not eat meat frequently.

@@iovubrb I think he ment ethical. From that perspective you either support animal abuse in an early stage (milk,eggs) or at the end (meat). Healthwise it is definitely not better overall to eat milk, cheese & eggs than meat. While an egg CAN be very nutritious (as meat CAN be) milk is just garbage. @@worldview730 For the first time in history, we are living very long lives. It is only now that we need to eat truly healthy/whole foods plant based--if we are to live those extra years without chronic disease, meds and surgery. At present, most of us now live the last decade or two of our lives in declining health. Start a med, more meds, more surgeries, more doctor visits, more hospital visits, eventually being homebound or in a nursing home. For hundreds of years it was ONLY about living to see another day and long enough to procreate to continue humans on earth. Now we are usually living 80 years or more. May as well make them healthy, active, fun years--not unhealthy years in decline!
@lauralang30894 жыл бұрын
Most vegans I know are not whole foods, plant based. They tend to eat a high fat, some processed foods diet--and look like it. If you are to keep yourself chronic disease free, you need to get your fat calories under 15% of total calories, 8-10% is optimum for those who are not highly active. You cannot get down to 8-10% calories from fat if you eat processed foods. One thing that was incorrect in this video is about HDL. HDL is the clean-up cholesterol. The lower your cholesterol, the less you need HDL. If your total cholesterol is under 130 (it should always be under 150), your HDL is going to drop as well. You don't need as much HDL. No such thing as 'healthy fats' either. Even if all your fats are plant-based, if you are eating more than 15% of your calories as fat calories, you are going to develop chronic disease at some point--maybe later than SAD eaters, but you won't be nearly as healthy as those who stick to under 15% fat calories. For those with heart disease, the only way to reverse it is to stick to 8-10% fat calories, and no animal foods whatsoever. Studies have shown that if you continue to eat some animal foods, or even just a little animal foods, or higher fat (over 15% calories from fat) your heart disease will stay the same or get worse every single year. Only when you remove all animal foods and get your fat calories down to 8-10% of total calories will you reverse your heart disease. And yes, we see it constantly. Those who have blockages don't have them a year or two later. It is not a 'miracle', it is the norm when you eat right. Our body wants to be healthy!
