In searching for a 15” street tire to roadrace and autocross I couldn’t find a comparison so I bought 3 different tire brands for 3 different cars because I needed them and now I know which to keep buying and which to never buy again

I’m so old that I remember putting “radials” on my 64 Malibu SS back in the 70’s, they may as well have been F1 tires for how much of a difference tires make.

Durometer can be useful for keeping track of the condition of your tires (ie. not aged or heat cycled into oblivion) but it really isn't very much of a performance indicator. Tire material properties at operating temperature are going to be wildly different than just sitting static in your driveway.

This video is the 1st time I ever heard of a durometer. Two days ago I changed out mom's tires because my alignment guy said the #1 cause to "my" death wobble issue. The guy is a professional autocross racer/driver/builder/owner and I've always trusted him wholey. He didn't have time to explain why these tires could cause the death wobble issue, but as I was driving home I assumed maybe as the tires get near being bald...maybe they harden closer to the carcass. Am I correct in assuming that?

I think I'd rather have a tire that is rated at 160 or 200 to do 75 than one that is rated at 110. I have had tires come apart at normal speeds.

You may not realize this, but tires are not made from a single piece or from only one compound. The sidewalls easily have as much to do with handling and ride on a radial tire as the tread compound does. Tread durometer is probably a reasonable way to judge condition vs. new, but only one part of a larger picture of a tire's construction and design. Of those tires, the best for regular driving, in a regular car, is most likely the Hankook. The Kinergy line is a direct competitor to Michelin's premium all season tire (I've owned both, on the same car, and they have both been excellent). The BFG is literally discount Michelin, made with less expensive materials, less expensive methods and typically are of old tread patterns. They're decent tires and will get the job done without breaking the bank, but they will be a little noiser and rougher than a Michelin. I wouldn't run a Cooper tire on purpose on anything I cared about.They're too near the bottom to not buy something cheaper and so far from the top to not buy something better. It will be interesting to see what you think of them all on the track..
@chappell721
@chappell721 5 ай бұрын
of the three, the BFG is probably the closest to being a "premium" fitment. Michelin uses BFG more to market towards niche markets than as an actual budget line. I would suspect that most of the 15" non-performance sizes are common carcass with other Michelin branded lines (that may or may not still be available). but the honest truth is that choices for performance tires in a 15" size, especially something appropriate for a muscle car are limited at best. tire companies build stuff that sells, and because low aspect ratios and 17+ inch rims have been the norm for new cars for two decades now there just isn't much demand for 15" tires with tall aspect ratios and good dry grip. You're pretty much stuck choosing between tires with 50k mile treadwear warranties that'd be right at home on a minivan.
@TheBrokenLife
@TheBrokenLife 5 ай бұрын
@@chappell721 Disagree. I worked for Michelin in a BFG plant and BFG is much more the everyman brand, and they really aren't even attempting to market against each other, and the construction and materials actually are different (Michelin plants are positive pressure air conditioned being the first of many quality controls that BFG doesn't get). To further clear that up, BFG and Michelin aren't even built in the same _state,_ never mind the same plant. Michelin is the premium fitment for sure, but that model of Hankook is targeting tires like Michelin's Destiny line. There really is no competitor for the Destiny in a BFG, by design. A Touring T/A would be the closet thing, and those are fine, but they're not a Michelin. You suspect wrong on the carcasses too. They're not even assembled the same way. I was very surprised when I went to visit a couple of Michelin plants. It was like a different brand, not just the parent's way of doing it. Many of the changes were extreme. None of them I can really discuss in much detail, though my info is old now. For something for an every day street heater on 15s, I think Chris is taking a reasonable approach. Buy a few things, try 'em out, see what he likes. No sense buying racing tires for that type of thing, unless he hates them all. His use IS the opposite of the intended for some of those though. The Kinergy really is sold as a class leading comfort tire, and they are pretty good. For doing burnouts and cutting corners? I can only guess. They are nice tires though.

In my opinion tires have changed a lot in the last 30 years even though some still look the same. When the C4 vette came out and would pull 1 g on the skid pad it was always very interesting to see that the exact same tire on the same car would do even better if half the tread was shaved off. I raced a car in the Carrera Panamericana in the 90's several years and always ran BFG because that race involves many different types of pavement. The front fender of the car cut into the coner of the tread so deep you could see wires of the steel belt because I hit a bad pothole in a sharp corner at about 50 mph. I put on the spare and 2 days later caught a curb and blew out the tire and ruined the wheel. I couldn't find a replacement tire the same size in Mexico so I put the "wire" tire back on and ran it up to 120 mph several times and finished the race 28th out of 90 and drove 1000 miles back home on it as well. BFG made a very good tire in the 90's.

I ordered those Kankook tires once at a store. When they came in I went to check them out and did NOT buy them. The sidewalls were thin like a balloon and I didn't want to blow a tire if I rubbed a curb. Instead I went with the BFG and was happy.

The hardest durometer skateboard wheel is around 101a, so that dry rotted one will either squeal like a piggy, or bark like a power-slide on a skateboard. Those new tires are covered in mold release, too, CRC Tire Cleaner works real good for getting rid of it. Aired up you'd get different numbers, too.

By far the best handling tire I ever slapped on a car were a BFG low profile performance tire that I put on a new Golf about 20 years ago. They transformed the car. The only problem was that they were darn near shot by 15,000 miles and were complete toast at 20,000. Not practical, but man did they grip.

I remember buying tires for my vw when I graduated from college.... 17.77 a piece. My brother and I got them mounted at Kmart and we walked over to a little bar... it was about 10 am. Tires were done at 2 pm. We drove back over to the bar and stayed til about 5 and then had dinner. The tires lasted about 4 years of hard driving... This has nothing to do with the video, but I have a set of hankooks on one of my pickups and it is reliable as hell. I consistently get nails in my bfgs and michelins (on the wife's mobile)..... burn that rubber boy!

Researching some new tires for my '70 Charger in the sizes I wanted--275-60-15's in back and 235-60-15's in front--I went with Cooper Cobras because the local big box store had them for significantly cheaper than BFG T/A's, and the reviews seem to indicate the Cobras would have much better tread wear. BFG's wear out so quickly. Rubber softness may not be such a good thing! ;)

Doesn't mean the tire will necessarily perform better, too many other variables that need to be weighed in that can nullify the results of any single test. If you want really soft tires, get spongy winter tires, but like I said it doesn't mean they will perform better. Have to do good 'ol real world testing for that. Also the softer the tire the faster it wears out (not a rule, but an indication).

GENERAL Alti-Max run great on my 1998 Sienna. 225/70/15 on Summit wheels. I don't hear much tire noise when I run 80-85mph on interstates. At the rate they are wearing, they will probably wear out around 50k miles. Alti-Max are a great budget buyer tire. I run Michelin Commander2 on my soft tail Deuce. The front tire was 11yrs old last year. I lean my bike hard, to scraping pegs and they still grab like glue. New Dunlop's drifted allot more. I used a jewelers loupe 12x magnification to inspect for dry cracks, any cracks. I ran 8k abusive miles and they are dated out and only half worn. I am changing tires that don't show any cracks or signs of age.

You might want to try a set of Nexen tires. And reapply that at least once every 3 months but if you're going to be running it in autocross, maybe every 4 weeks dry and hard. It will also work on all the rest of the rubber and plastic on the car. It's been awhile since I put a set of BF goodrich's on any car, because they were absolutely lousy at being able to turn the vehicle while they were on the car. Maybe they're better now than they used to be but none of those tires are particularly soft. Like I say try these other tires that I mentioned. I had gotten a set of those off of a car that had been damaged and put into a yard that had some nice wheels on damn, I put them on a Chrysler 300C. And the car was a completely different animal and turned better than it already did. Buy a lot.

If you want max grip out of your BFGs shave’em down to 50%. That’s how the IMSA Greenwood ‘Vette ran them when BFG came on the market back in the ‘70s. Much depends on your suspension set-up though Or try running Good Year F1 Rain tires, ( close to Slicks) I run those on the Street in summer, don’t last very long , but good grip and street legal (LOL) because you still have a visible tread! Also ran cooper cobras back in the day and both the BFG and cooper’s just dry rotted and if you hammered corners too hard and fast, my stuff ate tires despite being properly aligned for typical street usage. But I loved 295 BFG’s on my early 80’s F series. These days I run 18” nitto tires. Switched from 17” nitto’s due to 295/45R18 being a bit taller and fitting what I wanted.

I think there is a little more than that to a tire. In my country we have to drive on winter rated tires during winter (obvioulsy) and most will use summer tires from march/april to around october/november. Winter tires are usually alot softer than summer tires to gain traction in the snow (like your hankook), but they will not live long if you drive them during summer time cause of increased wear. All seasons are a middle ground, but since hankook sells in europe as well, they have to perform better in the winter than during summer. I generally keep my hands off of all season, cause their they usually suck compared to more "specialized" tires. Why don't you look into some 17 or 18 inch wheels and get a proper performance tire (michelin, continental) for them? I mean you'd probably want to not do constant burnouts, cause that's gonna be quite heavy on your wallet, but if you want handling that's the way to go imo. Those big side walls wont help at all when turning corners.

@@damianlindsey6177 Not one of these companies makes a performance tire in any muscle car size like 225-60-15, 235-60-15, 245-50-15, 275-50-15, or 275-60-15 so if they make some small diameter one for an accord or whatever isn't really relevant here. Still need 17s or 18s. The tire choice in like 245-45-17 or 275-35-18 is incredible in comparison.

@@goldduster318 unfortunately the "muscle car" sizes are for fairgrounds and cruises. You are already asking alot out of those cars to do anything close to the resemblance of hard, curvy driving. That is the biggest reason why the pro touring cars have the better sized and frankly more balanced looking wheel and tire combo. A 14-15 on a car the size of these boats are small and makes no room for good brakes. Also, I run a 245/40r15 rt660 on the accord. It is also the tire I run on My comet

@@damianlindsey6177 Right, you're actually making my point. I have a 70 Duster with 275-35-18s on it. The car is light enough that the small brakes can work for autox but otherwise you get a lot more rubber on it with the 18 because it goes over the tie rod. I actually have 94-04 Mustang Cobra brakes on it and hydroboost. Not the absolute maxed out setup but good enough for most uses short of a lot of road course time.

@@goldduster318 right. I could probably gain a lot by doing a bigger wheel and brakes on the Comet but I refuse to cut the car even for mini tubs. Its been small block swapped with a t5 but started life as a 64k mile all original 6 banger. The accord is a literal throw away car I beat on just because its well, a beater lmao. Its fast with the ebay coilovers and bracing and has 11 inch brakes on it from a honda van of all things but with only 165hp, it is far from fast in the straight lines or from a dead stop.

I talked to a guy at the vintage races who raced a 427 Cobra. He said they have to get a truck tyre and shave the tread off, as if they use a normal soft race slick - it will shred the thing apart in a couple of laps.When I used to race go karts they had this stuff called tyre goo which you applied to the tyre and wrapped in cling fling for about half an hour and you could apply it a couple of times which meant you got 3x the life out of your tyres. But then they banned it and introduced 'sniffers' which could detect the hydrocarbons - which meant people who could afford to shell out for brand new tyres for each heat would usually win, great goijng guys I thought you were meant to make it a level playing field..

A lot of race classes start out to be a contest of driver skill, but most soon turn in to a contest of more and more expensive equipment. The fattest wallet usually dominates.

Ive used Coopers before, both in 15s (white walls) and theyre...serviceable. I also had Cooper Zeon Sport and they suck. Theyre hard as glass and you have no traction with them. BFGs...had them on a 14 Camaro, and loved them. Super gooey. Also have them on my 74 Ranchero...and theyre lets say old...lol but still have grip. Hancook never struck me as anything other than econobox tires though. BUt I did lake at Milestar!

Hey, Chris. Do you know where I can find a early 2000's era 5.9 l magnum engine block, mine had a head gasket leak and now it has a window in cast iron. If you could help me out in locating an engine block cheep, I would be greatly appreciative. I'm in the PNW.

I'm going to go with the experience with all of it , but the old guy 😅 ,I will have to debate that one. I still have a great set of L60-15'S on a set of 10" Cragar wheels and a set of H78-15 on a set of 7" Cragar wheels. Good old Firestone Wide Oval. Would I take them to a Drag strip, heck no, but I would take them 10 miles one way to the car show and then one burn out, and back to the garage. No more than say 60 mph and I will say 55. LOL, old man tires from a old tire shop clearance years ago and keep in the house unless they are on the car. I will use this video so I can get something to cruise around town on.

Of course, there are still tire shops around that will tell you that their cheap Chinese “Dong” tire is a Cooper knockoff. Or the “Wang” Tires, which they told me were a Pirelli knockoff when I asked them if they could order me a specific Pirelli. At one time the Dong’s were also Goodyear knockoffs, which my friend was informed of when he asked for a Goodyear tire, lol. So is there a Firestone knockoff that can kill me like a Firestone tire could? Yes: Any cheap $$@ Chinese tire Walmart and Costco sells.

You need high speed rated tires on the rear of all of your Chargers. They do nothing but spin wildly fast between stop signs and stop lights with white smoke billowing from them everytime you drive those cars.
