In this lesson I'll be showing you a hidden neck pattern I call the "L7 GRID". The L7 GRID allows you to easily figure out and play chords in any key and the kicker is it also shows you how to solo in any key! This super helpful for playing chords across and up the fretboard
Understanding and visualizing "The L7 Grid", will unlock the chords on the fretboard. There are 4 GRIDS btw...but this is the simplest.

Teacher once told me I was unteachable if I insisted on playing left handed upside down. 50+ years later I still love playing and learning. Your videos always floor me with what ease and clarity you're able to teach this incredible instrument (even to us LHUD players). This video was especially useful. Least of which, using the root note of the 6 chord to locate the best place to riff was mind blowingly simple and something I mostly guessed at before. Been a subscriber for a few weeks now, loving every minute. You have an astonishing gift of teaching, thanks for sharing it with us and keep up the good work!

You're in good company with some of the Gipsy Kings players. I recall being at one of theur concerts with my dad and thought their hand shapes for chords were interesting. I grabbed my dad'a binocs and realized they had simply rotated a right-handed guitar.

@@rickysguitar great lesson question for you what do you do when the e 6th string pentatonic runs in to the 5 string pentatonic. In other words you showed two positions you can play the pentatonic scale to be in key but if you move one of them down the neck it starts overlapping with the other one. Which leaves you playing two different positions in the same spot do all those notes sound right or overlap?

Wow! I'm going through this video a second time because the first time around I didn't quite understand. half way through the second round, Bam! I'm 54, I last took lessons at 13, for a year. I learned basic cords and scales. I learned a few simple songs. I quit playing because nobody was explaining to me how it all fit together, how it works. I wanted to know, but I didn't even know what to ask, If that makes any sense. Like the way you built the cords off of the low e string. As the root note changes when you climb up the neck, so do all the other notes when using the open e pattern with e being the root. And that's it Man! It all makes sense! Perfect logical sense! That concept applies to all the strings and all of the open cords built from their root note. Wow just wow, I could go on. You have explained to me so well what I needed to know. Man, by far the very best lesson I've ever had. Great video!!!!!

I've been playing blues for awhile now. But, you just gave me the secret to where to solo in a rock genre. You are right....the minor pentatonic does not work very well in rock....but now I know where to start pattern one of the pentatonic when playing rock.....KUDOS!!! No one else gave me that glimpse.

I jam a lot with my friends. Friends that have been playing together far longer than I have. As a new guitar player, I have trouble knowing where everybody is in a song. Never knowing where to be when it's time to solo. I usually stay in the rhythm and pass on my turn to solo. Only because I don't know where to start. I have an idea of what I want to play, but not the knowledge of how. This tutorial has opened it up for me. I get it, now. I know I will still have trouble, but this makes it closer. Thanks a million.

Just watched this lesson. I had figured out that I could solo using the Box 1 pentatonic shape pattern over any Key just by positioning my pinky finger on the key note on the bottom string as a reference point. What I hadn't realised was that I could also start with my index on the VI note position on the A string. A light bulb moment for me. Brilliant lesson. Thnx.
