I've come to realize that advice is essentially the distillation of someone else's experiences, shaped by the longing to have acted differently. It's profoundly valuable that your insights are rooted in self-reflection and accountability. Thank you so much, Colt, for sharing your wisdom.

My little brother’s in Nashville with his studio… Nashville does have a sound! But I’ve been here in Palm Beach for well over 20 years.. SFLA also has a sound! I used to make music for me down here when I was young- now I make music for King Jesus! I don’t think I wanna deal with any clients… Studios are different down here they’re behind gated communities… You don’t get a play until you pay… And I don’t mean with money. I have a nice studio… But we all have different paths! May the Lord bless the one you are on Mr. Colt- Bless Up 🙏🏼

I wish I was 40 years old. I am 57 and wish I that everything I know now I can go back to 40 with. Living is a constant learning process. Every year that passes goes faster and faster. Do everything you can do while you are young. The body does change as you get older. Enjoy it while you can. I am not in bad shape but I certainly feel a difference from 17 years ago. There is so much more to learn and experience. Great video.

Fantastic video. One of your best. As a nearly 60 year old, I would add the following: - Don't sweat the little stuff. Don't allow yourself or your customers to turn a minor situation into a crisis. Think to yourself: what's the worst thing that could happen? - The saying that the customer is always right is bullshit. Learn how to fire customers. Work for people who respect your talent and treat you as an equal (you made a previous video about this). - Don't hesitate. Life is short. Don't allow your bucket list to get out of control. Do it. - Be happy. Stupidly simple. But if you are not happy, what is the point?

100% agree. I'm 55. Several years ago, I got into a minimalist mindset: prioritize the things you value the most - and purge the rest. It started with possessions and extended into relationships with people - then extended into how I value my energy/time. I have no time for rude or difficult people. If I'm lucky, I have 2-3 good decades left. I'm not wasting a minute of it.

Very wise advice and like you, I wish I could have told myself life-business lessons 20+ years ago. I would like to add to this list - do not rack up a huge amount of debt buying studio and/or musical gear especially when your business partners are your "friends"! My first studio in 2002, I teamed up with two other guys - we had a dream to the first "pro" studio in Salem, AL - we purchased $20K+ of gear, building supplies, sound proofing, etc. Eight months later - due to unforeseen circumstances, partnership/friendship dissolved, studio closed down and I was left with at least $10K of that debt still owed. Took me several years to climb out that hole. Hard lesson learned!

Ten years ago - pre-internet sales tax and increased Reverb fees - you used to be able to flip gear - usually at a break-even price - sometimes at a profit. Those days are gone. The advice: Save up for the *real* thing is so spot on. I worked my way up to a Bogner Ecstasy too. After that, I decided to just be patient and spend my money once. I watched buddies going through a string of gear - while I just saved my money and was patient. So much more satisfying when you get that special piece of gear.

The funny thing about demand is that if your talent/quality of work is high, you will be in greater demand, whereas if you are average, only people with a low budget will enlist your services. Your studio looks incredible! Excited to see the complete studio build and wish you all the best! I’m curious about the power source and wiring you use, including the specific products and why you chose them. It seems fundamental to an exceptional audio quality, yet I haven’t seen anyone discussing power sources. People often spend a lot on high end audio processors without considering the importance of a clean power source.

My 5 cents: don't tell yourself you'll do something when you've gotten good enough, or when you've reached a certain level. Start doing it now, it's by doing you learn the most valuable lessons. And the definition of good enough has a tendency to move as you get better, so you'll probably never feel fully and completely satisfied. And that's ok, being critical towards yourself is the very thing that drives you to become better.

It's good advice. Maybe only thing I would change slightly is that your financial worth is defined by your demand. But your actual value is defined by the quality of the work you do. If you make high quality work your goal, while looking after the financial aspect, it's more rewarding. I don't think there's any point being in such a tough industry if the quality of work isn't your primary focus. Much easier to make money as in-demand carpenter. The only thing I would add is 'steer clear of the pitfalls of this industry' which is the romanticism of the lifestyle of drinking etc... All it does is kill creativity and sap productivity and you need to be 100% committed. Which you can't be while messing around. I think a lot of Pros that survive through this industry of our age have come to that realisation by their 40s. But, I do pickup that more and more serious young musicians understand this when the are younger. And it's more important than ever, since this 'industry' has got tougher to survive in. You have to look after yourself mentally and physically for the long-term. Because if you do, you can work away happily into your 70s and beyond. And not all careers are like that. And it's one nice aspect of music.

Honestly Colt, for your “spend money once” example, I’d argue the opposite. I think your twenty-something self learned a TON about different amps and sounds and gained real applicable experience with different gear that likely served you well throughout your career. Whereas if you just bought the 1 high end thing from the start, you likely would’ve missed out on so much experience and possibly even become less relatable/relevant to your clients if you only ever had experience with the “best gear”.
@ColtCapperrune7 ай бұрын
I see your point, and I think it’s valid. Unfortunately IMO that still leads to a huge waist of resources that could severely hinder your ability to go full time.

Hey C. I endorse the message…save & buy once. What does ‘nearly there’ even mean? When a product is 90% there, how are they determining the missing 10%? Or, the missing 1% - what is that?
