My HIPPO COURSE: thechessgiant....
Chess Openings: Learn to Play the Hippopotamus Defense
Against the best chess openings for white, there are many strong chess openings for black such as the French Defense, Scandinavian Defense, Caro-Kann Defense, Sicilian Defense, Pirc Defense, King's Indian Defense, Slav Defense, Nimzo-Indian Defense, Benko Gambit, etc. However, these chess openings are extremely popular and well known. How can we as black take white out of opening theory, while keeping the chess opening strategy at a high level? In today's video, we cover the Hippopotamus Defense which works against any chess opening played by white including e4, d4, the English Opening, Bird's Opening, King's Indian Attack, etc. The Hippopotamus Defense includes black fianchettoing both bishops, and placing the knights directly in front of the king and queen. The Hippopotamus Defense may seem positional and drawish at first glance. However, I believe the Hippopotamus Defense to be a dangerous chess opening for black or white, as it holds a ton of potential for attacking chess. One advantage of this chess opening is that it doesn't create any weaknesses in the position. In addition, the Hippopotamus Defense is extremely easy to learn, but is still a very good chess opening. Hippopotamus Defense keeps a high level of chess opening strategy, chess opening moves, chess opening theory, chess opening principles, chess opening tricks, chess opening traps, chess opening tips, and chess opening fundamentals. This is a very good chess opening for beginners and intermediate chess players. Chess moves, ideas, principles, strategy, tricks, lines, variations, tactics, secret checkmate strategy, fundamentals, theory, and traps are all important in chess openings, and the Hippopotamus Defense covers them all! The Hippopotamus Defense is one of the best chess openings for black, and best chess openings for white. Whether you are a chess beginner or a grandmaster, we hope you enjoy learning how to play the Hippopotamus Defense!

Yeah, I like this format. The Hippopotamus is an opening I've considered, but I'm still at the stage of not understanding the plans and just making moves I've seen in similar positions. Thank you for posting so many games in one spot. I'm going to be watching this several times. I'm starting to develop a positional appreciation for blitz. Tactical awareness is stretched REALLY thin in blitz, but it goes so fast you can see one side gaining space, playing against weak squares, etc. It's actually very instructive. Please give more openings this treatment. (Might I suggest the Pterodactyl, Bird's Opening, or the Stonewall Attack?)

Great video for someone like me who has abandoned memorisation and trying to join you in the hippo adventure. Interestingly you often go for central pawn breaks which is different to the theory from gingerGM (I got his hippo chessable course) who tends to go for flank pawn pushes or the C or F pawns breaks. It's good to see all sorts of different ideas. Keep it up and please just record every hippo game you play - I'll watch them all! PS I swear you were on speed for this video lol.

Losing the queen and still winning, that's gotta be the highest recommendation the hippo can get. The hippo, so solid you don't need the queen. The hippo... Coming soon on a chess board near you. Rediscover Chess. Forget 960, play the hippo. If Fischer was alive, he'd play nothing else. It's that good. I'm falling in love with the hippo. What I love about it is that I have no idea if the position is good or bad, I just lock the position, c5 or F5 depending, it's like it plays itself, so it is good forb pattern recognition, etc. And seeing opponents messing up, always surprises me but then I wouldn't know what to play either. Thanks for being such a great proponent for this opening. Cheers 🙏

The way this opening loses i find os when the opponent has very aggressive center pawns breaking open the position before black can even get established

Ya this is the best way for white to play against the Hippo... looking to make a video on it soon - sometimes I think black should go into a regular Modern Defense or transpose to a Pirc Defense depending on white's 3 pawn or 4 pawn central presence.

Hey Solomon, Big Fan of all of your content ESPECIALLY the hippo. I’ve been using it almost exclusively at my club and have found people only have success when throwing knights and pawns down the board sacking pieces. Any advice on this?

Thank you for all your videos. I bet with you in the video you will get way more subscribers in the future. You should do a Kings Gambit rating climb. I don't think anyone has done that on the internet.

You got it brotha, and I plan on having a lot more camera videos going forward. Good idea! I will add this King's Gambit Rating Climb video to the list.

First day of playing Hippo. 8 Wins 1 Loss 1 Win. 90% winrate. Went from 400 to 600+ Then next 4 days I have like 30-40% winrate and lose most of the 200 rating I had gained. And drop to 500, then climb to 570 then back to 520. I keep getting fucked aall the damn time :/ They keep playing super aggressive, and all these tutorials on Hippo are from 2000+ games where enemy isn't hyper aggressive ,shoving bishops and queens down your throat in 2nd & 3rd turn...

I didn't want to learn the hippo and now I can't think of a good reason why. I'm about 70% win rate with it and 50 points higher in one session. I love the tactics produced by all the different ways white tried to punish it.

Sheesh that's a good percentage!! Ya the Hippo is very strong and worth learning. It is not for everyone, but myself and others have gained hundreds of ELO because of it.
