I'm with Jessica. I had a 1992 5.0 LX and preferred the cleaner look, plus the 5.0 LX is slightly faster than the GT due to it weighing less (as a hard top). The look is personal preference of course.

I like the LX sedan coupe 5.0, and if I ever get another, that will be it. Having bought new a 91 GT, had they a 5.0 LX coupe on the lot, I might have bought it instead, especially when the price was probably several $1000 less! 😁

Hi Randy. Both of the fox body’s are great cars and I personally would keep them both. I would also think, maybe keep the lx for Nick to have for a first car. Kinda cool for a kids first car. If he can get insurance on it. It’s a great deal. My first car was a ford escort here in the uk kinda similar to the lx. Keeping the 90’s theme going and much better vehicles back before it went all digital.

Really nice find Randy! Those tires look bigger than factory so I think you may have gears in that. Someone didn't change the little gear in the transmission. Great cars. My dad has a 90 GT convertible with a 347.

I absolutely love my 89 convertible. I’m the 2nd owner and it’s only got 94k miles. Never wrecked. When I converted mine to 134 she started running hot so had to upgrade the radiator with electric fans. She’s good to go and loves running the roads

I've owned 2 Fox Body T5 5-speed Mustangs ('91 5.0 GT, '91 5.0 LX). Basically same car other than GT urethane ground effects and 3.08 (GT) vs 2.73 (LX) gears. Sold the red-on-red LX for $7K and bought my 2017 S550 GT PREMIUM.

Randy, both are beautiful cars and each have their unique qualities. The LX will probably handle a little better than the convertible GT. I think you might have an E cam in the GT by the sound of it. The BorgWarner T5 in the GT sounds like 2nd gear synchro might be bad (typical) You will need to speedo gear on the transmission due to probably having 373 gears in the rear to fix your speedometer problem… I believe it’s a blue gear. Have fun with both!!! Love the channel

100% on all of that, it is absolutely an E, and yes the blue 23 tooth gear is the one that is needed for 3.73s. Also, with the work that has been done, it needs the blue 24# injectors, those tan 19#ers are getting close to max duty cycle to feed that engine.

Love both the GT and LX...I've owned both and currently own a '92 LX 5.0 convertible and either way both are way fun to drive and I get all sorts of compliments when I take mine out...If by chance u have intermittent headlight issues, it's probably a melted headlight switch and or turn signal switch...These GT's are notorious for that when running both the fogs and headlights....Definitely worth the $8k all day long and definitely the keeper.

Sell them both, and get the GT with a sunroof, and stock headlights. I bought one new in 91, and loved it for the few years I had it. Thing road like a truck, but got me to Vegas in 2 /12 hours rather than the normal 3 1/2!😁Plus, I like the stock wheels on the 91 better, but that's subjective.😁👍😎✌🗽 P.S. I actually prefer the LX coupe/sedan 5.0. Take a look at that as yours is the hatchback which is not much different that the GT. just no ground effects.✌

When making the decision upon a "keeper" collectible automobile, my vote is always for the convertible body style first, and the station wagon body style second. I have never been without at least one convertible since I got my driver's license in 1975. Currently, I have a 1984 Cadillac Edlorado Biarritz Convertible in midnight blue with white leather and white convertible top. From 1986 to 1988, I owned a 1986 Ford Mustang GT Convertible that I special ordered from the local Ford dealer in Maroon with white top, white leather interior with flat black hood trim delete and every available option except automatic transmission (I did want the five speed manual transmission). I kept that car for 36 months, it was a beautiful, comfortable, small car, but it was a warranty problem nightmare and when the extended warranty was about to expire at 36-months and 45,000 miles, I sold it and purchased a pristine 1975 Pontiac Grandville Convertible that I drove for years thereafter, trouble-free.

That’s a good deal on the GT. Great color combo. Interior is the desired black interior. Gt40 upper and lower off explorer. Probably has the heads too. Cam sounds good. Wheels are nice. Randy the Beeping noise is the Air Bag Module under the dash. Clock Spring most likely has gone bad. The color on the car is called Electric Red. Fox Bodies are notorious for shocking people in cold weather.

Randy, that upper intake is from a 96-98 5.0 explorer/mountaineer. It’s a factory cast gt-40 style and even accepts the stock 5.0 emblem.

Gears in the rear end may not be stock in the GT. I don't think the tires would make the speedo that far off. Regardless, great deal. The mechanicals are easy

If they didn't tune it after putting a cam in it, the car won't run for crap. Those 5.0 computers hate cam upgrades. Low rpm is the main issue

My guess is cam, under drive pulleys, larger MAF and TB, off road H and cat back, possibly ported heads and intake. Hopefully it now has at least 24# injectors. Most likely has 3.73 gears without the correct speedo gear. That’s why the speedometer is off.

I always loved the 89 Mustang GT convertible. I think the different color ground effects really set it off. I’m wondering if people like the LX version are more looking to modify and drag race. Or I guess some just like it aesthetically if they don’t like the looks of the ground effects. The GT version looks great with the top down and all the windows rolled down. I like how the GTs look with a real nice roll bar. The 89 Saleens were really sweet too. I bought a 2005 GT Mustang brand new and drove it for about 6 years but I have to get me one of those 89 GT convert someday it was definitely a dream car when I was a kid.

I'm inclined to respect people's choices, and I can understand and respect the preferences people have between the LX and the GT. Some feel that Ford designers were too conservative with the Mustang's 1987-1993 styling, while others appreciate Ford showing restraint. The LX gained a notorious reputation for stealth performance. It doesn't even look fast, and if it wasn't for the larger wheels and tires as well as the telltale dual exhausts (along with the V8 rumble), it's hard to tell it apart from the 88 hp 2.3L four base Mustang. Others prefer a little more style with their Mustang, the argument being, I'm paying this much extra for a Mustang to get a V8, I shouldn't look like I am the broke guy tooling around in the four cylinder model, V8 or not. Neither argument is necessarily wrong. It's like asking people what's the best color (I like black and dark blue). There is no right or wrong answer. Personally I think the LX and the GT are both guilty of styling faux paux's - the LX went too conservative, and the GT went too flashy (those front fender extensions and those cheese-grater tail lights its most notorious sins). The '93-only Cobra did much to atone for both models styling sins, IMHO. By the way, the Mustang GT actually took a fifteen year hiatus from the lineup from 1968 until 1983, despite being initially responsible for giving the early Mustang some performance credibility (the Mustang took some early criticism for being a secretary's car - pretty and stylish, but not enough performance beans to give it any street cred.) The K-code 289 V8 with 271 horsepower helped mute some of that criticism. Shelby's further work on the Shelby GT350 car did even more to establish the car as a true musclecar. Ford also took some heat for the 87-93 Mustang's engine options. Ford killed off both the V6 options and the turbo four cylinder SVO, leaving only the 2.3L four or the 5.0L V8. We called these the "joke or smoke" choices. Eighty eight horsepower is asking a lot of that poor 2.3 to haul around a car weighing around a ton and a half, and the only other (factory) option was the 5.0L V8 which added around another $1,200 to the MSRP. The V8 definitely did much to rectify the power deficit, at the cost of your insurance company punishing you with higher premiums. This decision by Ford made engine swaps a hugely popular topic for the car magazines back in the day.

The in-line 6 cylinder was an option also. I think from 1979 till 1983. I agree on the bi-polar styling cues GT vs LX. I prefer the LX with the V8 if I was to buy one.

Keep the GT ragtop for yourself and give the LX to your son...both are good buys. The only downside of the stick fox bodies is that the clutch effort is very heavy! It's a cable clutch and they are not easy! Grinding the 1-2 shift is pretty common as well...

Sounds like the typical E303 cam, pretty common Fox modification. I think your squeezing in on the end of affordable Fox bodies, clean ones are going to skyrocket. I always preferred the LX, I thought the GT ground effects looked gaudy.

Actually your red LX has a Mach 1 hood with functional ram air scoops that you can buy a separate piece to force the air into your engine

It sounds like cam. Sounds a lot like mine when I had the e303 in it. Has the intake off of an explorer engine, check the heads and see if they have the 3 bars in the front. Easy way to see if you have e the gt40 heads. The wiper stalk shorts the connection behind them sometimes. I have had to replace a few of them. Either the lights will go on and off. The wipers will not work. With the LED lights it’s possible. The alternator is an internal regulated 75 amp. I have never had one that didn’t charge alittle low at idle. I highly recommend the 130amp alternator upgrade. I have owned 13 foxes. The one I kept was my 89gt convertible triple black. It has 60,000 k and has been through it all. Stock, stock with bolt ons. H,C,I. The vortech a-trim,s-trim,different heads,multiple cams. Stock block 306 with all that stuff on. Now it’s alittle to race car. I want my AC back, my cruise control. It has a dart block with a 7875 turbo. I do have my s-trim kit with old school FMS green top 42s and a matching mass air. Would bolt right on. Currently pulled for 13-15 psi. I have some smaller pullies though. It could be yours! Not sure what shipping would be from pa to you. Keep the vert! Even when I had notches. They were fun for sure. Something about my wife,kids and I cruising with the top down. It’s the best.

Oh and it looks like the gears were swapped. If it’s a stock t5 with the .068 OD 5th they look like 3:73. The gear on the transmission output shaft was not changed I bet. There are 2 gears for the Speedo on the fox. One of the output shaft and one on the end of the cable. They have places that tell you the gears you need. I can’t remember them anymore.

Speedometer is off because it has an aftermarket rearend gear. You must get the correct tooth gear on left side of transmission. It WILL get police attention.
