I'd love to see a video on overtime laws in other states. In some states you don't earn overtime until you work 40 hours. And don't earn time and a half after 8 hours.

That would be a very short video because only 3 states offer 1.5x pay after 8 hours and only California offers 2.0x pay after 12 hours and on the 7th consecutive day of work.

It'll definitely be more challenging to almost impossible in a procedural unit. We have nurses that left to endo and we're floated to the rest of the hospital during the first few months of the pandemic because they halted elective surgeries. Us ED nurses, though, we're never (and have never been) floated to another unit.

Keep up the grind… I think the most I did in a row was work 18 months lol just to see if it was possible but it was working 2 different hospitals when I was off at one I went to the other… lol but in the long run I was losing money from doing that but at the same time I was gaining experience and knowledge because it was a level 1 trauma ER… it made me a very efficient and knowledgeable RN… priceless… love the vids and breakdowns 👍🏽

Thanks dude! I've always worked in level 1 and 2 trauma centers before moving to my current position and I definitely learned a lot but I couldn't imagine working 2 jobs. I'm too lazy for that lol. I reduced my hours to 20 a week so I could focus more on life outside of work.

Thank you for sharing your video! Your template is so nice with all those days off! Hoping to go 24 hr or perdiem in icu (from 32). My template is all over the place and feel I barely have days off. Did you arrange to have your templateschedule that way, or did the new role already come with that nice template?

I started as a 32-hr evening shift RN with max of 4 consecutive days off. Then, we had this thing called "The war room" where our director allowed us to add, remove, or shift the data around in our template/schedule. So I dropped two days from my template, went from 32 hours a week to 24 hours a week, with 7 days of in between. Then 1.5 years later this 12-hr shift template came up and I had enough seniority to get selected for it. But now, there's a new template I've got my eye on, and if I get it, I'll only be working 5 8-hr shifts every two weeks, 20 hours a week. The reason why I stick to working where I'm at is because they make it so easy for us to get a shift we're happy with.

@@oliverlikescheetos They usually ask that you wait 6 months before you apply for a different template. But it's not required that you do so. Also, you should be able to see if there's another shift available because the nurses on the unit you work for should be notified before anyone outside of the unit. You can speak with your manager to find out if there are any other shifts available.

You motivated me. What would be the point of going to higher education when nurses in California make this much. Nurses going to crna school because of the money and regretted it. As nurses alone our earning potential is higher in California than any other state. I know lgtr let’s get it revealed a paycheck that was 25k biweekly pre tax.

25k is definitely achievable at Kaiser. I work with nurses bringing in over 60k per month, and if Monica and I didn't just have a baby I would probably try to go for a run like that but I value my time with my family and find that coming in for 4 hours on my days off gives me enough balance between work and life.

UC Davis are the second highest paid in the Sacramento area (almost tied with Sutter Sacramento). I have friends that work there but a few of them have second jobs in other hospitals so I'm not sure if it's because they don't offer enough OT, they don't pay as much as Kaiser, or they are looking for experience in other hospitals.

Question for you. I remember from one of your past videos that you said APRN's like NP's & CRNA's don't qualify for the California OT laws. If you are an NP, technically you still are an RN so are you allowed to work as an RN also if you wanted to make extra money still as long as you don't blur the lines btwn practice authority btwn the two professions (RN & NP)? If so you could work at a place like Kaiser as an RN then on a few of your off days work as an NP somewhere else to keep your skills up to date provided you have a schedule like yours?

APRN's DO qualify for OT if they are not salaried employees. And yes, they are able to work as RNS if they choose to because they have RN licenses as well. I work with a few NPs that are staff RNs in our ED and have not yet left because there making more money working in our department than they would somewhere else working as APRNs.

Hi, I’m just an ER Nurse. Our hospital system doesn’t provide differentials for different specialties. Pretty much any nurse working for Kaiser’s inpatient units can earn this much money.

Curious why you switched to 12 hour shifts if there is unlimited OT and you can get overtime pay by staying over every 8 hour shift?

I switched because I wanted to work fewer days and have either the same amount of days off as my previous 8hr shift template, or more. And every time a new 8hr shift position was posted, although they had fewer total hours of work per pay period, they scheduled days were all over the place (eg: ON Monday and Tuesday, OFF Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday, ON Saturday, OFF Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, ON Friday, Saturday). I like being off as many days as possible because it gives me more time to spend with my family and work on the youtube channel. So, as soon as this 12hr shift position became available I took it because I knew I would be working only 5 days every two weeks, while still earning more per hour, and having an easier workload because night shift is easy compared to every other shift.

What does it mean to prebook OT shifts? I usually get text messages when shifts are available which is less predictable. On KP schedule are you able to sign up for shifts? My facility doesn’t do that for us :/

The staffing office will give us a call if we've put in our availability on our scheduling calendar and ask us if we'd like to book ourselves for extra hours of work, days to weeks in advance.

What does going "exempt" mean?

When you go "exempt" your employer not to deduct federal or state taxes from your paycheck. So, for example, let's say you make $1,000 before before federal and state taxes are taken out of your paycheck. After taxes are deducted, you are left with something like $700 (just an example but this would include federal income taxes, state income taxes, social security, Medicare, and state disability insurance). If you ask them not to deduct federal taxes, instead of getting paid $700 you would get something like $900 (again just an example) because they would only deduct social security, Medicare, and state disability insurance from your pay, but not federal or state income taxes.

Hey Daniel, they absolutely hire nurses with their ADNs. I work with many nurses that have their ADNs. There is no degree differential at Kaiser, so an ADN nurse will make the same as a BSN nurse.

We go tax exempt once a year on a pay period where we pick up a lot of hours because we want to get more money into our bank account. We are typically able to go tax exempt once or twice a year and break even with our taxes at the end of the year.

My base is $86.02/hr because I'm an RN III. My night shift differential is $12.25/hr. That brings my total hourly rate to $98.27/hr. I have 8 years of experience as RN but am currently a step 5 at Kaiser.

Yes, but I've worked in other ERs where they allow you to come in for 4 hours of OT. Although, I don't know of any other hospital that offers run pay.

You can go exempt permanently if you'd like. But that would mean you would have to pay all of the taxes you owe when you file your tax returns by the month of April (this is the month where the government collects what is owed to them or returns what is owed to employees who had too many taxes deducted from their paychecks).

Hey! Please tell me what I'm doing wrong with my math... Obviously, your exempt net income is $11,361. And, like you said your non-exempt net income would've been $8,287. The difference of the two is $3,074 - and this figure equals your FIT and SIT. If you divide this number by your gross income, you get 0.1988...How are you taxed at only 20%?!

Hey, thanks for the question. Yeah.. You're not diving by my gross of $15,460, you're dividing it by my net. 1-($8,287/$15,460)=0.46=46%.

You will do great. Just keep at it and don't give up in nursing school. You will be tested for sure but it'll all be worth it.
