I’m sure Ben pointed this out - it takes anyone a minimum of ten laps to learn a track. Working as a racing instructor at Palmersport for many years - I was asked a simple question on my first day, if a professional racing driver gets in the driving seat next to you, what do you do? My immediate response and naivety was “let them crack on” to be immediately corrected. They won’t know where they are going, as instructors we knew the track better than anyone. Point is. 10/10 for the send but having seen a roll over at 170mph which had less lateral force than your off, two things, roll cage and full face helmet / hans device on track if you’re even thinking about pushing limits of the cars. I’m sure I speak for everyone, we’d hate to see anything happen to you. I’m sure you’ve learnt your lesson. Just hope others are able to take it onboard as well. You were unbelievably lucky there. Keep up the good work.
@upshift75717 ай бұрын
around 11:55 is the loss of control a result of him repeatedly overcorrecting? it looked like when the car finally gripped up after the understeer he had way too much steering input. despite of that, would it have been recoverable if he hadn't shifted the weight back by using a bit of power right before the spin?
@joshallendirector7 ай бұрын
@@upshift7571 I could bore you tears with the long answer but the long and short it. Essentially overcorrecting is what it boils down to. Most people lose control of cars because they're simply asking too much of them. That being said, there's a right and wrong thing to do and what separates most people from being able to save situations like this, is experience or a lack thereof. Most people revert to being reactive, they're not actually fixing the problem. They're just guessing and it's all too late. Your muscle memory and instinct kick in order to save big moments from turning into catastrophe. I looked back at a save from an onboard camera and I can tell you, that I was a passenger. My experience took over. One little trick though, in race cars (so no ABS) if you're out of shape and you know you're potentially going to spin, provided you're on the accelerator pedal already, pinning the brake pedal at the same time will force the car to go in the direction it's travelling in. Not where the wheels are pointing. Gives you a split second to get things back in order. Naturally, not getting yourself in the situation to begin with is the smart play. I don't think we can ask too much of anyone in this situation though. Old mate is an enthusiast. Not a professional racing driver. The gulf in talent between the best road driver and even the worst racing driver is vast.

Quick tip Mat, on all VAG cars, Porsche aswell, partnumbers for left hand side parts end in an odd number, and right hand side parts end in even numbers, so example 5VE 425 301 for left, and 5VE 425 302 for right. Hope this makes it easier in the future.

A tip for when you’re in a slide that you lifted and corrected the steering wheel at the same time causing the car whip to the right a lot more than you could recover from. If you flick the wheel and return again before the car starts turning to the right and left foot brake without lifting the throttle, you will keep the car from gripping up to turn one way or the other too much because when you lift the throttle you have the wheels grip up and that’s where your troubles begin with turning to a direction you don’t want it to.

Mat, You're the best. It's been difficult for my family from covid junk like so many others, my father-in-law having a massive stroke and my oldest son with addiction. The builds, the hilarious fun all of you have and the joy when someone wins a car helps with dealing with the "stuff of life". God bless you, Hannah, your dad and all the crew. Even side eye Kevin..
