This is probably the biggest, most epic fight scene I've ever directed. I tried to approach it like any other fight scene. For me, character and story are of paramount importance in fight scenes. We need to understand who the combatants are, what their personalities are like and what they are fighting for. The fight must also advance the story in some way. Without this, it's just
mindless violence and in my opinion - boring.
Iaconus is an angry brute from an ancient time of conquest and expansion. He lives to fight and so his design takes inspiration from The Hulk, Juggernaut (from X-men) and a medieval suit of armour.
Croaton's original design takes inspiration from native american aesthetics. In this particular story arc he is under the control of evil aliens called the Quintessons. The added dark cables on top of Croaton represent this evil control and enslavement he is under. Big shout out to character designer Francesco Giglio designing both these Titan characters.
The animation of this fight was also a challenge. These are titan class robots - the size of cities! We wanted to make them move in a way that conveys their massive size and weight. We took a cue from the film 'Pacific Rim' for the animation and had them move slower than normal characters to show how heavy they are. Big shout out to Xentrix Studios for the incredible work animating these big bad boys. I wish I knew the names of the animators responsible for these scenes... If you've animated shots in this scene please let me know in the comments!
