I don't know much about Iaido but just generally speaking I love the Japanese sense of esthetics, precision, balance and attention to detail; from Iaido to karate to the tea ceremony they elevate their arts to something that transcends what it initially seems to be.

Swing and miss. The right hand doesn't move much when properly drawing a katana, it's all left hand pulling the sheath away. It's the key to being faster than the other guy on the draw, which is kind of the point of iado.

Hi. What is laido shodan grading? And how is it judged?
@peterjanjanin98832 жыл бұрын
If that's a grading, I'm never going for one! I hated doing Katas in front of judges, tournaments were the worst. It was OK infront of my Senseis and classmates

Kata and sparring was what I excelled at
@peterjanjanin98832 жыл бұрын
@@amberharmsen2497 I only excelled at sparring. I was never a fan of the the 3 point system but it did teach me how to be quicker and more precise with my attacks. Unfortunately I need to take a couple shots before the switch turns on😂🤣
@peterjanjanin98832 жыл бұрын
As sexist as this sounds unfortunately, I was always jealous of the girls/women because their Katas always seemed much more crisper. I've recently come across these lame Katas with an Iaito, totally ridiculous and not traditional at all

I wonder why everyone always wears all black. Even at my school I'm the odd one out bc I didn't buy a black uniform but instead I ordered a super nice silk one like what samurai(with money) would've actually worn

You can wear white, but usually that's for higher grades. But I'm not sure why we wear black, maybe just to have us look the same

People say that iaido is not a martial art, but just a dancing with a sword. I saw this video and a couple of others and I can say - yes its truth. This is not a swordsmanship, just a strange slow dancing with a sword in your hands instead of a hand fan.

@shevetlevi28212 жыл бұрын
I disagree. First of all there is so much that you miss just watching something visually without physically being there. There are all kinds of nuances that the sensei of the grading would be able to discern that you can't just watching it. Secondly you're being reductionist. Many martial arts exercises or routines exist to introduce or strengthen a principle, even if they're not used directly in combat. A musician practices scales in order to strengthen certain specific skills but if asked to perform they wouldn't play scales. You might be looking at a small piece of Iaido that Mark was demonstrating for his test that is part of a much larger whole.
