In 1970 the local garage owner in Alton Hampshire Nick Kerridge (who was a golfing friend of my dads) had a Ferrari Daytona 365GTB and took us up onto the M4 at Reading and gave us a blast. I sat in the dicky seat behind my dad and watched as the speedometer passed 140mph as we joined the motorway heading West ( yes there was a 70mph speed limit). For an 18 year old it was out of this world and so beautiful..

My favorite was the match race between Cobra and Daytona in this L.A. canal. And thanks for the view of the whole bunch of Webers at work. What a machine.

For a short but gloirous period of time (1971-72), I was the parts man for an obscure sorts car repair shop in Chicago. It was a desert for Brit parts then, still, I established networks for defunketed (sp?) Brit and French car parts. (Thank you Canada). You don't know who I am, but I was the guy who found your then way-stupid lever and/or hydraulic shocks and helped keep the love of Minis alive. Yay to me and God bless the SCCA.

You even took the bonnet off! At Le Mans in 1972, in the GT Class, Daytonas were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. They were 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th overall, behind three Matras and an Alfa T33. The noise was brilliant, as were the V8 C3 Corvettes before they expired. 🤣

What Iain (and the journalists at the time) didn’t stress was that the excellence of the amazing engine transmission / suspension and aerodynamics was the result of Ferrari’s obsession with Sports / GT car endurance racing through the 60s and beyond, all delicately disguised and wrapped in an incredibly elegant package. The fact that the spark plugs and valve clearances are optimised for long term running at 150+ MPH says it all really…..

The opening with the Webers at speed is amazing. I still remember the first Road & Track test of the Daytona coupe. There is a shot through the windshield from behind the driver. It is a little fuzzy, not R&T's usual quality of photography, then you look down at the instrument panel, and the tach is at redline ant the speedo is over 170. Personally, I would have the iconic five spoke "star" alloys, but the Borranis look great as well. It would definitely be in my top twenty car garage.

The Daytona Spider is on that short list of emotional, symphonic, visceral journeys to nirvana where even the shortcomings are spectacular quirks.

Beautiful car. One of my favourite Ferraris. Oh to be rich, will have to settle for a scale model. Changing spark plugs is so stressful. X threading, things falling into the cylinder, over-tighten, under-tighten; it is a venerable mine field. I'm happy to learn that my dread is shared with Mr. Tyrrell.

The torque tube Porsche 928 first appeared in 1978. I bought a rather tatty one in the '80s with a burned up clutch because the prior owner didn't want to deal with it. Surprisingly simple job! Remove the lower bellhousing with a few bolts, slacken the driveshaft coupling and slide it back, remove the pressure plate bolts. The plate and disk drop out of the bottom of the bellhousing with a piece of 12" driveshaft. The whole thing took less than thirty minutes with hand tools. That job on a C5 or C6 Corvette takes all day with a lift.

Having had a Daytona Coupe for a couple of years, I can confirm it is indeed every bit as wonderful as this video portrays. And so useable; great all-round visibility (much better than most modern cars) and a PAS kit can easily be fitted to make it less of a handful at lower speeds. I'm told that that transforms the car.

The only prancing horse that I have ever been in wasn't officially a Ferrari with it being an older Dino, I can't remember the model number though as it was many years ago now (over 40 years) all I remember was coming home with my father and seeing this stunning car infront of OUR house. My dad got the honour of taking it out for a drive with me next to him. Sadly probably the first and only Ferrari for me.. 1 Can dream........

@@iain_tyrrell Hahaha. My customers tended to have turntables in the 500 to 1500 euro class and not ones over 10,000 euros fully equipped. The new anniversary model costs around 60,000 euros. Crazy. Unfortunately, I never saw how the Linn Sondek LP 12 was set up and adjusted. I once heard one at a trade fair in northern Germany! Not bad !!!

_The_ _Gumball_ _Rally_ is a top five movie for me. The Cannonball movies strike me as a sendup of car culture. Brock Yates was a one of the truly great car guys, but something happens to a good book when the American movie industry imposes on it the "vision" of some chauffered executive. _Gumball_ has the same underground feel to it as has the journalism and legend surrounding the first few CBSSMTD events. I was born too late.

Great video and what a sound off the v12, i think the ‘chop top’ of this car was done by Bachelli et Villa (Carrozzeria Auto Sport of Bastiglia) worth looking into as they, apart from mechanicals do a lot of hand beaten bodywork for the oldest of Ferrari’s (one of them is apparently ex Scaglietti)

Magnificent! Back in the late 80's, Bramley Garage had one of the original 7 RHD Spiders, reg "X5". Ex John Bonham, I believe? It had a red interior. I used to prefer the Plexiglass front, but when you see them in the metal, the refelection of those headlights, when they are down, on the bumper, is a very special look, Great video Iain, thanks. :)

At 36.26 mins I was taken back about 40 years. When I was in my mid teens I purchased a wreck of an Alfa 1750GTV 105 chassis. I clearly remember having the Twin 40 Webers from the dismantled Alfa engine sat on my workbench amongst Atco and Suffolk punch lawnmowers engines that I used to repair to earn a few quid. Not sure how many times I opened the throttles to the MAX on the Webers carbs and at the same time imitating the sound of the engine screaming at well over 6000rpm !!! What a weirdo I must have been but in 2024 seeing this bank of downdrafts still put a huge smile on my face. I like the holding the plug lead away from the plug my Dad showed me this trick when I was about 10 whilst trying to diagnose a cracked distributor cap. Great video thank you.

Such sensational classics these. Especially as Spider and with pop-up lights they most certainly stand out and eye exceptionally more pleasing and profoundly than their closed counter part. The engine is of course a genuine exhilaration, hearing all 12 cylinders sing. The sound of these is an absolute euphoria 💓Wire wheels on these still do look properly quintessential, whereas on later super sport designs they tend to appear out of place; rather antiquated perhaps. However, on these they do belong. What a fabulous machine 💖

I have to tell you the great Maserati parts guy, Kyle Fleming, had the opportunity to have Vitaloni make them for him in the early 90s, but he needed to make 25 and he just didn’t want to plunk the $3k (total! lol) to make them all. I remember as a youngster 1- seeing one on the road and it was like looking at a flying saucer. 2 - seeing the gumball rally in the cinema and when they drove it through the city in the early hours it sounded glorious. Thanks for letting us hear it. I thought it was illegal to drive without a bonnet on the road.

The 130 coupe is absolutely lovely though, i keep stopping the video when there is a decent view of it. 30 years ago i had a concours GTV6 (nearest i've ever got to a Daytona 😂). Loving the sound, how it instantaneously becomes guttural, yet mechanically complex - reminded me of the Autocar review of the 599 GTO of modern era V12. Beautiful to look at, yet ferocious. Fantastic.

I'm sure you have seen, worked on and driven so many different cars over the years Iain, so to hear that you rate this particular Daytona so highly, really says something. It is an absolutely stunning looking design. I wonder how many (after market) cars were converted from GTB's over the years? And that is a genius bit of filming, driving without the bonnet on, putting you right into the heart of the action with that V12 doing its thing and revving its heart out. Loved watching the whole video Iain 👍

It took extra effort and shop time to take the bonnet off for the engine sequences. That costs money and moves labour hours away from paying projects with deadlines to be met. Thank you for that. The induction sound was excellent as was watching the carburettor linkage. This is where some of us live. We couldn't have had these experiences be it not for your sacrifice. Thank you.

Iain…OMG!!! I drive a rare manual Ferrari f430 coupe with sport seats - analogue connection, sound, performance, exploitable bhp, reliable & joyous. BUT for that achingly beautiful design, drive & sound I would happily pay the maintenance costs and inconvenience for the experience. Thank you for sharing and well done on your remarkable channel.

Dear Iain, Thanks very much for this one, it was very enjoyable. I learned a few things about the model along the way, too. The different cam drive installation being one point, (and I thought I could hear the gears involved during a couple of under bonnet scenes). It's clear that when you create your videos sharing information is a priority, and I really appreciate this, as I am sure do many others. You keep going from strength to strength! Keen to continue getting regular updates about your own Espada project. That one doesn't pay the bills, I know, but I have a soft spot for the model. Best, Brett
