IAIS QJ

The Iowa Interstate QJ #6988 pulled a freight train from the shops in Newton to South Amana this morning. Over this weekend, the 6988 will be operating a few passenger excursions heading out of South Amana.

It's still a weird thought that this 1950s design 2-10-2 is younger than a lot of diesels that I've seen. Even some mainline diesels are older than this. QJs are a beautiful holdout in the World of railroading. This video is quite impressive too.

I have literally NEVER in full scale seen steam locos with several different whistles, I know most have the air horn and whistle but the other variations? Those were sick!

Would be nice to see it hauling more cars, i am sure its quite capable of that! Just curious, is the diesel a DPU, or just along for the ride?

Iowa Interstate pretty much always runs a diesel on their steam hauled trains, but not because 6988 can’t handle them itself. The diesel is along for the ride because IAIS has very few, if any, places to turn 6988 around.

@@blackbirdgaming8147 dont know if youve watched any videos of Reading and Northern 2102, but a couple months back, they hauled 50 loaded coal hoppers running in reverse, plus, they even used a caboose!! It was supposed to do another freight run today, but havent seen any videos of it yet. But yes, IAIS probably wants to use their steamer in normal fashion, but they could at least track down a caboose to make it authentic!! RBMN 2102 must be running circles around UP 4014, havent seen many videos of it.
