She lost her lover and went down-and-out, almost lost her mind and wanted to die, but she managed to start a new life and get rid of shadows of the past that haunted her. I think that the shadows represent her fans and different songs represent different phases that the fans go through waiting for her to release her next work. Ripple, as seen by the shadows who are now dancing and embracing her more abstract content, are the ones that stuck with her since her change from being Ionna Lee to being in iamamiwhoami, which is less mainstream and more experimental. The last dancer and shadowshow, I feel like, are a fear that she has where if she stops connecting to fans or making music/art, then her fans will leave her and she will be the “last dancer” dancing to none of her audience. Shadowshow is the continuation of that. She is now performing to and with shadows in the literal sense, not the previous metaphorical ones.

SHADOWSHOW LYRICS [Verse 1] I am fire, I am damage in the making I am an army set out to control your every ticking I am a giant stepping on the tiny world you live in [Pre-Chorus 1] And you shake and you shiver As the roof is coming down And the walls grow thinner [Chorus 1] Shadowshow darkens the river Turn hearts into stone We run, we run terrified, what have we done? Is this how it goes? Silence grows loudly bigger Its heartrending crow You run, you run terrified, what have you done? Is this how it goes? (Let the shadows swallow all) It's how it goes [Verse 2] Mass confusion, never been so excited What your hearts felt for us was evidently unrequited [Bridge] And by the sea, we’re laying down our hopes You will conquer all Your rise, our fall And by the sea, I’m laying down my hopes We will conquer all Our rise, your fall [Pre-Chorus 2] And I shake and I shiver As I cut through skin and bones Can you solve the riddle? [Chorus 2] Shadowshow darkens the river Turn hearts into stone We run, we run terrified, what have we done? Is this how it goes? Silence grows loudly bigger Its heartrending crow (Let the shadows swallow all) You run, you run terrified, what have you done? Is this how it goes? (Let the dark upon us fall) It's how it goes [Post-Chorus] Let the shadows swallow all Let the dark upon us fall [Outro] I am fire, I am damage in the making I am an army set out to control your every ticking

WOW . I feel like my heart stopped for 6minutes 2seconds. The symbolism here is soo sooo wonderful. She shattered the reflection of who she was (the mirror in the last dancer). Reconstituted it to then give her a new platform (the mirror throne) for her new identity and then became a reflection of all of us (the mirrored jumpsuit). And she led us all into this digital world she created. Wooing us with her mystery. Into the lake. Team iamamiwhoami I applaud you on this, a powerful journey full of intent, and I cannot wait to see where the rivers flow next. X o

Pardon me while I geek out, but can we just talk about how iamamiwhoami's Jonna Lee basically gave her fan base two middle fingers in Shadowshow? The track which was the first song written for the project, which was places at the end of the third installment, the Blue era; iamamiwhoami has been a very fan influenced project and fans were unhappy with the direction this audiovisual album was going. Prompting the return to "the forest" where fans felt comfortable and satisfied with the work being produced. The track leading up to the end if the album entitled "The Last Dancer" features a very disgruntled Jonna Lee returning to the forest where the shadows (fans) essentially dragged her back into. Toward the end of the video Jonna begins to do the dance from "sever" a track from "Kin". This symbolizes so much in the conclusion of Blue; where the video for Shadowshow brings in a mirror dazzled Jonna which represents reflection, also very symbolic if the breaking of the mirror in "The Last Dancer". The video incorporates Swedish folklore of a creature that would play music to lure children into the lake, in which Jonna leads the shadows into the water after donning the mirror outfit, symbolizing the end of the Blue era and the end of her taking shit about her artistic vision and where she wants to go with it. High five to her

Just as I predicted we get an evil looking Jonna leading the shadows to her "pond" like good drones (that we all are). It seems the summary of blue then is about the start of her career as an artist, as plain old Jonna Lee, the reactions, the interest/chase from fans, the decline in interest from both sides, occasional excitement from some fans but no real sustaining thing, and the ultimate realization that in order for her to get the fans interest/love/obsession as she did during blue blue in her apparent dream, she would need to strip off what she once was and just be herself, her naked essence, which is how she's referred to the project many times when comparing it to her last sound. And the result is to lure all of us into her digital waters. I love it! What a fun ride it's been! Thank you Jonna, Claes, WAVE, and all others responsible for quite possibly one of the most profound and groundbreaking works of art of the 21st century to date...in ANY medium! (This is my third comment on this video so I better shut up now LOL). See you on the island and in concert, hopefully!

I first heard this song in the bounty's online live concert, and I loved it so much. It stayed in my thoughts for months. I've heard that shadowshow, the song from the new album, and the song I've heard in the end of the concert (it was an acoustic, piano version. very simple, but with a great lyric and melody) had the same lyrics (wich means they're the same song), and I didn't believe it. But in the moment the song started played, and I could hear her voice singing, I immediatly recognized it. All I can say is that you guys made me literally almost cry. A cry that was a mix between nostalgy and pure satisfaction. And I've never thought satisfaction could bring tears to your eyes, but it does, and it feels great. This whole audiovisual project was delightful to my ears and gorgeous to my eyes. And yes, like you've done in the last two albums, you've finished with a gorgeous/delightful masterpiece, I feel now even more connected to this song. This "new" version (maybe "official" sounds better) is so powerfull, I can only say thank you for having this idea, and spreading it. It has been amazing to see how the project has changed and reinvented itself, but still being very unique and, somehow, constant with its essence. Thank you, I'll patiently wait for the next time. ♥

Loving the album even more now that I've watched all the videos and found the *right* lyrics. I feel like this album is discussing what it means to break free from the mainstream music world - and navigating that choice to keep your authentic self as an artist despite all opposition from the "powers that be" who decide what music is now a days... I could be wrong, but that's my interpretation! I'm sure, as with most artists, there are multiple messages in the music.
@asmallbabby42058 жыл бұрын
In an interview she described the album as being recorded, filmed, and published in realtime. I think it was an experimental concept album meant to be co-created with the audience. What ended up happening is people didn't realize through the entire project what she was saying, and didn't contribute anything but the usual comments, and Shadowshow is a thesis of her remorse (I think) over the definition of art in our times. (See the video for Thin which is about her disappointment with her audience.) She ended up deciding that people don't participate unless the offer exists outside of the work itself, so she explicitly asked people to send in dancing videos to play during the live performance.

Been following since 2010, back when the "who am I" part was still debated. :) I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed it all. The bounty days were my favorite, but that's a personal preference. "T" will always be the song/video I say I love most. But iamamiwhoami has evolved throughout their span... Each time altering changing their tactics, although not entirely so. This album was not quite as focused on storytelling/heavy with symbolism in the visuals as in the past, but that doesn't make the songs/lyrics or visuals any less interesting or wonderful. I think songs like "thin" and "chasing kites" were something I hadn't expected from iam, and I love that. What I'm saying is, I love iamamiwhoami and I'm pretty sure I always will. I have always found something meaningful and deep in their visuals/lyrics. Keep on creating, iamamiwhoami. There are too few artists out there with no talent... Continue setting the example for what talent really looks like!

To me this video tells this; "You could reflect yourself in me. I am just like you, and you are just like me. Human. Could do good, could do bad. Like there is fans who cherish and adore ;) , there are people who will not like this project. Even those who once were fans. So it's impossible to avoid negative comments, whatever you do. I think she knows this all too well, and therefore, to protect herself from negative comments, she uses her power, all naked, iamamiwhoami to the core, and control her fans who would do anything for her. And drown them." So if this is the last video/song ever, it's a damn good ending. (but I do hope they'll release more stuff)

It's about creative process. At some points, you are terrified at the power you wield over people's lives ("I am a giant stepping on a tiny world you live in") -- at others, you are terrified of times when you are not producing the art expected of you ("silence grows loudly bigger"). You want the darkness to swallow all; to end it without a trace; to be free of this burden -- but you are drunk on the power to create and to move others.

I love all the songs of all the albums, but this song is definitely my favorite. I don't know if it's the lyrics, the progression, or all of it, but I can listen to it back to back and still feel the same joy
