Apparently religion is on the decline in the United States
However, it’s still very difficult for a political candidate today to get elected if they are not religious. In fact, candidates often hype up how religious they are by making sure media outlets know when they are going to church. See! Look at me! I’m going to church! I’m a good boy!
The current U.S. President, Joe Biden, identifies as a Roman Catholic, making him only the second American President in history to be Catholic.
Article 6, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution says you can’t be forced to take a religious test in order to hold a government position, but obviously, voters can be biased against or for candidates based on their religion.
In this video, I’m going to briefly look at the religion of every President in American history, and some of them might just surprise you.

One of my favorite stories about Coolidge: one day he came home to the White House from church and his wife asked: “So, Cal, what did the pastor speak about today?” The President said: “Sin.” After a minute, she asked further: “So? What did he have to say?” He said nothing but: “He was against it.”

@Fychf depends on what you want to be saved from. If you believe in the sun of Adam, maybe that might work. If you’re up against an army of Egyptians maybe you just need a good stiff East wind. If you’re up against some lions in the upper Galilee, you could do with a good spear. If you’re in front of the Sanhedrin, some knowledge of Hebrew and literature could go a long way.

To answer this, we need to go back to the beginning of the colonies. We all know that some of the early Americans fled England to escape religious persecution. This is true enough, but England did have an officially endorsed religion: Anglicanism, or the Church of England. Most estimates say at least 80% of England at least pretended to be Anglican and Anglicans quickly became a large presence in colonial society. The English Civil War broke out in the 1640s and '50s. This had two effects. First, many Anglican gentlemen and nobles fled to the colonies, especially the slaveholding colonies where they could buy slaves and estates. These estates, along with the relative power of the Anglican Church there, allowed them to live as they had despite a Puritan England. Secondly, after Puritanism fell in the Restoration, most of the colonies passed acts for religious toleration. However, nowhere had universal religious toleration until Pennsylvania was formed. There was only one group that was tolerated everywhere: Anglicans. Catholics were allowed in Maryland but not in Massachusetts, for example. Likewise, most royal officials would be Anglican and the English government, from time to time, supported Anglicanism in the colonies. This was sometimes resisted, most notably under the reign of King James II (who was a Catholic and unpopular and, fun fact, the namesake of New York). Nevertheless, on the eve of the Revolution Anglicanism was a robust force in the colonies. It was the richest church, probably the most populous, and had the most state support, both from several local state governments in the south and from England. But the Anglican Church in the US was loosely under the Bishop of London and held as one of its tenets that the King was the head of the church. Naturally enough, the Church was overwhelmingly loyalist. Only about 27% of the church structure were patriots, though this was much higher in some parts of the South. The Continental Congress criminalized praying for the King or Parliament in 1776 which resulted in almost every northern Anglican church shutting its door. After the Revolution, the Church was disestablished, much of its land seized, subject to fines, and individual clergy were investigated. Between 70% and 97% of Anglican clergy were expelled or fled, depending on the colony. By some reports, there were only two Anglican priests in the whole of New England after the Revolution. Those who remained radically reformed the church to have more democratic structures and a more American structure. They revised the Book of Common Prayer and attempted to strengthen what churches remained. But their congregation's numbers were devastated by the Revolution, as was their influence. By 1790, no state officially supported Episcopalianism or Anglicanism anymore. But it remained the religion of the elite, especially the Southern elite. The Church had been relatively more patriot in the South, it had definitely been more integrated into local society, and the South was a more elite dominated society. There was also less tradition of religious dissent and a longer tradition of conformism. Likewise, the First Great Awakening had been more a Northern than Southern phenomena, especially in the cities and coasts. Where it did find hold in the South, it was often in more marginal populations, like rural whites (such as those in Appalachia) or slave communities. The same was true of the Second and Third Great Awakenings, though these were more present in the south. Notably, these awakenings often stressed social equality and opposition to slavery, which made them unappealing to slaveholding elites. So while it declined in general, it remained strong in the South, especially along the coasts and in major slaveholding regions. (It was also still an elite religion in the North, but Northern elites were less dominant overall and were mostly not slaveholders.)

I figure in the case of the Founders who became president, its because they had been British and that was the official church. As for the later presidents, that is a good question.
@duskydancing6409
@duskydancing6409 Жыл бұрын
Growing up super evangelical, it was taught that the founding fathers were not only hardcore Christians, but hardcore evangelicals who wanted Christianity to be the law of the land. Imagine my shock when I studied US history and Christian history and was like, "Wait, what do you mean the founders didn't believe in the rapture?" Kinda messed up that their words are misconstrued to try and tie religion and government together when that's clearly not what they wanted. Also, as an Episcopalian now, it was a surprise to see many of the first presidents were the same (though I'm sure the denomination has changed alot over the centuries).

Hey! I don't know if you are young, but did you know that the concept of the "Rapture" only begin around the 19th century? Yeah it is pretty recent, i don't know if the evangelicals hold this belief in America, but yeah, it is pretty weird.

I grew up in the Episcopal Church and Gerald and Betty Ford attended the same church that I did in California. They always sat right behind us. They were really nice unassuming people. When President Ford died, his first funeral service was held at our church. My stepdad worked there and worked during it so I heard about all of it. It was definitely a lot of crazy logistics for a medium sized church but everyone was incredibly honored to be able to make it happen.

One thing you didn’t mention about Eisenhower, he was raised a Jehovah’s Witness, but he never really accepted their faith or was baptized in it. But his parents were deeply religious, and in the days when the JW’s were simply known as “Bible Students,” they conducted religious services at their home in Kansas, before any church (called ‘Kingdom Hall’) was established there. His parents died with that faith. His mother lived to see him become president.

Loving each other and forgiveness is mostly what Jesus and the New Testament were all about. Many so called Christians seem to follow the God of the Old Testament instead- with the anger, fear and punishment. Which sort of negates the whole point of Jesus and the story of his crucifixion. Contrast Carter (whose worse known sin was that he found women attractive even when they were not his wife) to Trump who (while claiming that no one on Earth is a bigger Christian than he) said he has never asked God's forgiveness because he doesn't believe he's ever done anything the slightest bit wrong in his lifetime. That would make Trump the only human in history to have been better than Jesus.

@HickoryJ
@HickoryJ 2 жыл бұрын
@hr zr “weird sects” could be read as a little bit condescending, though I have no reason to believe you meant it that way. Just like in Europe, there is a lot of diversity within American Protestantism, and the American Protestant denominations are deeply interwoven in history with European ones. The Episcopals talked about in this video are basically the Church of England, but post-revolutionary war. The Presbyterians are calvinists that descend from the Church of Scotland. Methodists are intricately linked with the Methodists of Britain. Baptists, Pentecostals, and many others are largely from the first and second great awakenings, movements in the US that reinvigorated religious fervor with new branches of Protestantism that largely appealed to lower classes.

This was a great video. I love that you just stated the facts briefly without adding a lot of commentary, and, where it was debatable, you acknowledged that. So, I'll give my own editorializing take :) I do think that Abraham Lincoln was a Christian of some sort based on his speeches - if not, then he was being somewhat manipulative and hypocritical to invoke God so much. I think what I find the most striking is that, despite how religious the general populace was in early America, Presidents were actually *less* afraid to publicly profess unorthodox Christian beliefs at that time, then they are now. I can't imagine a modern President openly making a point of denying the divinity of Christ like John Adams did. Now even Presidents who don't seem to be that religious at all, based on their behavior, make a big show of their religion - Trump being the leading example. He even said that he had nothing to be forgiven for, which is directly contrary to one of Christianity's core tenets: that we are all sinners. But that didn't seem to hurt him with evangelicals, since he showed up at their services.

This was fascinating! I grew up Presbyterian. I still believe in God and all that but I got disenchanted with my church over the years. Honestly, knowing that Reagan, Bush, and Trump all have ties to my old church explains a ton. My church was very politically conservative and it was alienating. I kinda relate to Obama, just dabbling in different Christian denominations. I can’t really find something that suits me but I hope I do.

DJT was baptised as an infant and confirmed as a member in Jamaica Presbyterian Church, Queens, New York. The family was also connected with Colgate Collegiate Church. Some seem to question the extent to which the exposure took. The US Presidency may be the second hardest job in the world; the hardest being in any job its reflecting any faith of orientation. My impression is by and large Presidents’ political understanding and orientation exceeded that of whatever their faith and its practice. I’d say Southern Baptist Jimmy Carter, non-member Lincoln, and Dutch Reformed Martin vanBuren may have succeeded as well as any.

The Reformed Church has gone through a few name changes since 1628 when the first church opened in New Amsterdam. It was originally The Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk. In the 19th century It became The Netherlands Reformed Church In America. It is now the Reformed Church In America. The Reformed Church never grew considering that its been in North America for almost 400 years. In the beginning it was a Dutch speakers church then a mixed English/Dutch speaking church and renamed The Reformed Dutch Protestant Church in America. It has had some competition from The Presbyterian Church which came here from Scotland and is also a Reformed Church. It was headquartered in Philadelphia while the Dutch Reformed Church, There are a few Dutch Reformed congregations in Michigan which has a lot of Dutch descendants. There are other Reformed Church congregations in Europe. Ukraine, France, Germany, Sri Lanka, South Arica and Indonesia.
