Benjamin Franklin saying Jersey is a “keg tapped at both ends” is an amazing analogy when you think of how NYC is on the top end and Philadelphia is on the south and the residents of New Jersey views themselves in relation to which city you’re closer to
@jjbud3124

Philadelphia is not really on the south end of NJ. Cape May is at the tip of NJ and it's nearly 100 miles to Philly from Cape May. I think Franklin was talking about there being no route out of the state from the south.

I live in New Jersey and the whole state is a vibe. Essex, Passaic, Union, and Hudson are EXTREMELY densely populated because they all have large cities within close proximity to each other. The west is in the middle of nowhere especially in Warren and Cumberland. Camden is a county with a really s***ty ghetto town. The South has a lot of beach towns, the middle like in Middlesex (LOL) and Mercer has more universities, Bergen is very wealthy and Salem has a big nuclear power plant. New Jersey is possibly the only state where you can visit the entire country without leaving.

New Jersey fun facts: Scheyichbi is the indigenous Lenape name for New Jersey. It roughly means "land between the waters", referring to the fact it's between the Delaware River to the west and the Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean to the east. The modern submarine was invented and tested in NJ. While the submarine's concept was already invented, it wasn't until John P Holland, a teacher from Paterson, launched his design in the Passaic River in 1878 (which stayed submerged for an hour). But it wasn't until his sixth attempt at a shipyard in Elizabeth (by what is now Newark Liberty) that his creation remained underwater

As a person who was born and spent my childhood in New Jersey and then moved away, I can say it doesn’t deserve the shit it gets. It’s a wonderful place to grow up with good schools, communities, walkable towns, and has that small town feel even though it’s a massively populated state. North and south Jersey are very different culturally. I think a lot of people from Jersey like to keep the illusion that it’s a shitty place so more people don’t move there. The people I know there worry about having to leave because it is so built up yet it’s hard to find housing.

The issue with the tolls in NJ goes back to before EZ Pass (automatic tolls) were introduced. The Garden State Parkway used to have tolls very close together in which toll takers would collect 35 cents. It was frustrating because you had to carry a bunch of dimes and stop every couple of miles. That is what prompted George Carlin to say “can I just write you a check when I leave the state?”

The best thing was the Parkway toll tokens they used to sell. They were identical in size to a local arcade's tokens. Arcade was 25 cents so it became popular to sub in the cheaper token. When authorities realized this there was a big to do, that is until they realized that people were getting arcade tokens mixed in when they purchased a roll. Only in NJ... I was born and lived most of my life in Michigan. I've also lived for stints in California and Wisconsin when I was much younger. My family moved to New Jersey 7 years ago when I was in High School and now I can't imagine going back to any of those states for permanent residence. I think New Jersey is in the perfect geographical spot. Its got easy access to the majority of the East Coast's biggest cities, which basically gives you the ability to participate in the East Coast urban culture without having to pay New York taxes or real estate prices. Not to mention that NJ has one of the best public transportation networks in the country. While each individual service might not be amazing, it doesn't have to be because New Jersey has multiple acceptable services that help cover for each other's weaknesses. And the school system and academic culture is incredibly advanced compared to Michigan! The one strength of New Jersey that's actually a bit of a weakness from a livability standpoint is the per-capita wealth. There are so many relatively rich people in my corner of New Jersey who feel the need to flaunt their wealth. They aren't even that rude, just obnoxious.

I've lived in Jersey my whole life, and I have no idea where the stigma of us being so rude comes from. Most people that I know are very nice, and although you might come across the occasional jerk now and then, I can't imagine it's much different from any other state. In fact, all of the strangers I've met that have been unnecessarily rude or condescending towards me are from New York, not New Jersey, and the reason I know this is because I used to work on the boardwalk where every summer New Yorkers would flock to the beach, proceed to clog up our streets, be really rude and childish, and then leave, without cleaning up after themselves.

Although I was born and currently live in NY, both my parents are from NJ. My dad's (Irish-Polish-Russian) from Paterson while my mom's (Canarian-Cuban) from Newark. My paternal grandpa was part of New Jersey's contribution of troops who served in Europe during WWII (he passed down his coin collection from his WWII travels to me). My dad became an attorney because he wanted to prove that people from Patterson can be a success and destroy stereotypes about the city. He passed due to cancer when I was still a kid. For a few years after, I lived in Jersey City, and we enjoyed its convenient location across from NYC as well as not needing a car because it is a very walkable city and has reliable transit. Now living on Long Island in car-oriented suburbia...we regret making that decision as we didn't know how much we had it in Jersey City, as now everyone who wants to move to the NYC metro is moving to JC...increasing the value. New Jersey really doesn't deserve the reputation it has gotten. Great people like Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen have come out of the state, I've been to Newark many times and not once have I felt unsafe, NJ isn't all that boring as it has its own beautiful places like Paterson Great Falls, Newark's Branch Brook Park (which fun fact, has MORE cherry blossoms than DC!) and the Delaware Water Gap, and the state has benefits from its location within a densely populated area like a transit bus and rail network spread throughout the state. Sure NJ Transit has its problems, but be grateful to be in a state where the state's transit covers the state's entirety...can't really say the same for other states. If people don't want to pay tolls...TAKE TRANSIT! NJ taxes are paying for it!

Solid breakdown, especially for someone who has never been to NJ. For a history project years ago, I read a whole bunch about the early colonial period in New Jersey, which at the time was two separate proprietary colonies (East and West Jersey, fun fact: even Washington referred to NJ as "the Jerseys," plural). After the Dutch, NJ came to be populated by a ton of Quakers and Scots. The main port city, Perth Amboy, was even considered by William Penn to be destined to be "the London of the Americas." By many metrics, it was an ideal site for trade, connected directly to the mainland. However, the anti-Quaker and anti-Scottish bias of the Royal officials, along with lobbying from Dutch and English merchants in New York prevented Perth Amboy from being granted a royal charter. As a result, it became a site of illicit trade and was referred to in a lot of the old literature as being "the pirate port." This same dynamic has continued through the years in a variety of ways, largely centering on New York-centric economic interests fearing the growth of New Jersey (specifically Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, and other industrial cities) just over the river at their expense. The Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey waters, almost the entire cast from Jersey Shore is from New York, New Jersey technically has three football teams (the Giants, Jets, and RedBulls all play in New Jersey with the latter's fan base largely being New Jerseyans). We had the first baseball game, first football game, first ultimate frisbee. NJ has historically been on the cutting edge of science and technology with Edison labs, Bell labs, Marconi labs, Tesla, RCA, and many more churning out all the stuff we now take for granted. Yet, the deindustrialization of NJ starting in the 1960s led to a massive decline in our larger industrial centers which never really recovered. Instead they were replaced by new industries that were moved to the exurbs (insurance, pharmaceuticals, etc.), leading to a lack of cultural gravitational pull from an industrial core and those bigger cities left ravaged by the insanity of capitalism. If you were to redefine the political boundaries of northeast New Jersey and call it Greater Newark-Jersey City and included everything that is high to medium density, you would have a place with a population of more than 4 million people, making it the second largest city in the country. That said, the media markets of New York and Philly kind of smear over this dynamic. All the critiques listed are mostly legit though. Tolls are bullshit and should be abolished. Mass transit should be massively expanded so drivers aren't in so much of a pissed off state of rage. BUT, there's actually a ton of open space here in NJ. The Pine Barrens, the northwestern counties of Sussex and Warren, and plenty of other areas to forget that you live in what would be the third most densely populated country on earth if it was considered to be a separate country.

I was born, raised and lived in NJ all my life. Most people only see NJ for it's rough cities and industrial wasteland but beyond the GS Parkway and Turnpike, there are many nice areas. Our beach areas, what we call the shore, are among the best in the USA. Significant parts in the north and west are wooded and protected areas for water reservoirs for the cities. There are a number of state parks, undeveloped forests and the 'pine barrens' in the southern area. Much of the Deleware River has limited development and the upper section is part of a National Park recreation area. Parts in particular in the central and southern counties are food farms for apples, sweet corn, eggplant, tomatoes, blueberries, cranberries and other items. We have beautiful fall foliage. We have great and diverse food choice, Jersey Mikes' was founded in NJ in the 1950's, there are many fine family owned pizza places and Italian food restaurants, a wide variety of Asian, European styles available too.

I lived in Camden county and went to school across the street from a horse farm in the regular suburbs it wasn't even rural where I lived. I moved to other places like DC and Florida but I came back to NJ because in my opinion it's the best. Where else can you go to get so much diversity out of people. Everyone's so different depending on what area you're in and you are close to literally everywhere on the east coast. I'm 90 mins. from Brooklyn, 20 mins from Phila Int. Of course New Jersey is very densely populated, but Down in South Jersey there is a lot of open space. Living in Central Jersey I feel a culture shock when I go to South Jersey. Plainfield is a small city, but we're going through a big growth spurt right now because there are a lot of new Apartment Buildings being built.

Growing up in New York, I always had the sense that many New Yorkers were jealous of New Jersey. This was during the 1980's and 1990's before NYC's renaissance. People were flocking to the suburbs and companies were moving into the office parks across the Hudson River. North Jersey is heavily populated by those whose families left NY for the NJ. South Jersey, especially the suburbs in Camden and Burlington Counties are heavily populated by those with Philadelphia roots. I think between 1950 and 2010 New Jersey grew by 5 million people, with a large chunk of that population being relocated NY and PA folks. I live in NJ now and despite some faults (cost of living), it is still more comfortable to live in compared to NYC. NYC is fun but an hour long subway ride, with a 15 minute walk to your office through a crowd and the elements was OK when I was younger. That kind of day-to-day grind is not something I would like now (I know some don't mind.) Since the pandemic, tons of New Yorkers and Philadelphians have been moving into my area of New Jersey.

As someone from New Jersey I can answer the question in a one word answer: Turnpike. Most people passing through New Jersey take the turn pike which runs from Philly to NYC. The areas around the turnpike are beat down and rusting. Camden, Jersey city, Newark. The major areas around Philly and NYC are not the best. They miss the shore, pine barrens, and mountains in the North west. That’s fine though because the locals like to keep our state lowkey.

When I was in the navy and afterwards when I lived in Richmond VA I found myself having to be a translator and liaison for Baltimore, Philly, and New Jersey people. Absolutely correct about the outsized influence of New York City. It is an incredibly provincial and oddly insecure region with an axe to grind with everywhere else. The term "Upstate New York" is generally applied by them to any area north of Yonkers. The people actually living in that amorphous land of darkness distinguish between The North Country, the Finger Lakes, Western New York (where you will find far better pizza), etc.

Mr. Beat, thank you for making this video. As a proud lifelong New Jerseyan, I've never understood the hate. Sure there's things I don't like about New Jersey but I can probably think of like 25 other states I'd rather not live in for very serious reasons. New Jersey is a really nice state once you leave the Turnpike and we do have some natural beauty in the south and northwest. We have a temperate climate with very few/mild natural occurrences like nor'easters and the occasional hurricane. We are a beautiful melting pot of many different cultures and religions. Yes we are a bit rude while driving but it is because we have to deal with all these Pennsylvanians and New Yorkers not knowing how to drive all the time! Having been in New York City I've asked for help there and while you will eventually get it, people are a lot colder and a lot less open than people from my home state in my experience. Speaking of NYC, at least in Northern New Jersey we have a lot of the same conveniences and cultural products that New York has but at a lower cost of living which I'm glad you mentioned in your video. Looking at the rent prices over there is mind boggling to me, why not just live in New Jersey and commute into the city? I like going to New York sometimes but I can't imagine living there. And yes we have great schools, lots of all of your favorite people grew up in and were educated in New Jersey before moving to New York or LA. I must say though, Jersey Shore is a cultural product of New Jersey but I think I have to mention The Sopranos! Anyways, Mr. Beat if you're ever in the Garden State I welcome you to come enjoy some of our great food from many different cultures, in particular a Taylor Ham/Pork Roll, egg and cheese on a roll, or some of the best pizza in the country (some critics said ours was the best in the country!), and enjoy the Pine Barrens or High Point State Park, or walk along many riverfronts being developed, or simply just walk around and enjoy some beautiful parks. Thank you for correcting the record Mr. Beat, you're always welcome here.

Beautiful forest and mountains in NW NJ where I grew up are well worth visiting or living in, but NJ owes much of it's prosperity and quality of living to the bounty provided by the Atlantic.

My parents grew up on Long Island, and when my mother was in kindergarten, one of her classmates announced her family was moving away to NJ. She said everyone started crying, running up to the girl and hugging her and wishing her good bye as if she was about to go die. Jokes on my mother, 25 years later, her and my father moved us down to NJ where I've lived now since I was 3 years old lol. I have to point out, NJ is a very segmented state. North Jersey and South Jersey might as well be 2 separate states, it's almost as polarized as Long Island vs Upstate NY. So many of the common stereotypes (basically sad mini new yorkers), is just North Jersey. As you travel out of state, I find North Jersey kids tend to say they're from "New Jersey," whereas us from the southern parts of the state tend to say we're from "South Jersey". I grew up near the shore and we hate North Jersey shoobies just as much as NY and PA shoobies lol

Ehh... I'll be honest. If they're nice? I'll take them. Just be nice. I have a neighbor who has been coming from Philly for generations and I want to smack her with a frying pan. She's rude. She's nasty. I don't want to deal with her at all. But there's people from North Jersey and New York who are incredibly kind and respect that you are here for a vacation and not to screw up things around you... And not to be a pest. Be nice. Respect the unwritten rules. If you yell at people working service jobs in the summer (especially the summer) while you're "at the shore" then you're dead to me. That's about it. And seeing as most people cannot follow the 'be nice' it's really impossible to handle shoobies.

While the colonies of NJ and NY were bickering, Connecticut meanwhile pulled a based move and claimed a swath of the Midwest called the Connecticut Western Reserve that was basically Connecticut's Chile. It had to eventually give up these Western claims beginning in the 1780s, but imagine an alternate timeline where they were a part of modern Connecticut's borders. In the 19th century, the Western Reserve was the most anti-slavery part of the country.

NJ has a habit of draining your finances much easier than the majority of other states even if you're careful with spending. The population math has kind of been upended thanks to Covid. Most of our neighbors are former fellow NYC hipsters who realized 3k in rent would buy a lot of house in the suburbs of New York. Never understood the hate over New Jersey. We have some of the best schools, nicest suburbs, nicest year-round weather (it doesn't usually get to above 90 or below 30 and it's often sunny), and best infrastructure in the country. NJ gets a bad rap because of cities like Camden, Trenton, and Newark, but most of these cities are actually pretty nice. In fact, Trenton and Camden aren't even in the top 100 cities in crime rate in the US, and Newark is only 73rd nationally (below Philadelphia). It's also ironic that New Yorkers keep talking about tolls, when it's our state government that keeps telling theirs not to.
