This is really interesting. Since Nixon avoided impeachment and Ford pardoned him, it never occured to me that there might been other cases on Nixon involving the Watergate Scandal. But it makes sense that the Supreme Court would step in to get those tapes.
@Estarfigam2 жыл бұрын
I was not around when it happened, but I think Ford pardoning Nixon was the right call, so the nation could heal. So I’m curious now is this like kind of overturned or is it very much weaken now because of the most recent case that basically said that a president could basically “commit any crimes as long as it’s in a presidential act”. One thing for sure President Nixon would be rolling in his grave right now if he could’ve used “presidential act” as a justification for the Watergate scandal. Might as well just take back his resignation and pretend President Gerald Ford never became president. :/

the recent Supreme Court decision that essentially says the president actually is above the law
@ineednochannelyoutube265110 күн бұрын
@@imorvit The supreme court gave presidential immunity to the President in 2024 in the case Trump v. United States. Trump's lawyers argued that the president cannot be prosecuted for crimes they may have committed. The court instead said that they were immune to prosecution for "political acts" while they were in office, though he could still be charged for "personal" ones, overturning this case and granting presidential immunity to the president. Edit: I guess it didn't directly overturn the case, but it still directly contradicts the intent of this case and that of the constitution that no one man should hold power. My personal opinion is that I really fucking hate this case. It puts the president not just above the law (there is no possible justification for this) but in a way that makes the courts the arbiters of who gets off scot free. It supercharges the politicization of the court since you can get off Scott free for anything you do if the court thinks it was a political act so there's now even more of an incentive to corrupt judicial independence than there already is. This will likely prove to be one of the worst supreme court cases in modern history due to the almost assured abuse of power that will result from this decision.

With last night's FBI raid of Mar-a-logo, this video feels very topical right now. Maybe that's why it was in my recommendations.

I could never understand why we can't indict a sitting president when literally we managed to put to trial Charles I and Louis XVI who were literally kings who ruled with divine right.

The American people have a right to know if their President is a crook, and Nixon said he wasn't a crook Why would he ever have lied about that?

I remember a political cartoon from the 70’s titled something like “Nixon and the Incredible Vanishing Tapes” which showed Nixon holding a tape reel in each hand with short fragments of tape suspended between them. Sadly I can’t find a copy of this one online; I don’t recall if it was in a local newspaper or Mad Magazine.
