The two South American countries that outsiders often get mixed up that are both between Brazil and Argentina. The way I’ve always remembered where each is located is P U, and the P is always over the U. Yeah, I’m a weird guy, what can I say.
But while folks confuse the two, they are actually both quite different.
For starters, Paraguay is about twice as big as Uruguay. It also has about twice the population of Uruguay. (P- 7,152,703, U- 3,449,285) 90% of Paraguay lives east of the Paraguay river. Paraguay is also growing at a faster rate.
Paraguay is landlocked, Uruguay borders the Atlantic Ocean, for crying out loud. But hold up, despite being landlocked, the country has coasts and ports on the Paraguay and Paraná rivers, and the Paraná-Paraguay Waterway does exit to the Atlantic Ocean. See those beaches? They are in Paraguay, yo. Oh and Paraguay has the largest navy of any landlocked country in the world.
Paraguay and Uruguay don’t even border each other. Paraguay borders another landlocked country, actually...Bolivia.
Being further south and by the ocean, Uruguay has a more temperate climate. He never gets too hot or cold there, but in Paraguay it's much more varied. This map sums it up. Southeast Paraguay has a climate more similar to Uruguay, but the more north and west you go the more tropical it gets. Paraguay actually has two distinct geographic regions, divided by the Paraguay River. The eastern region, which is mostly grassy plains and wooded hills, and the western region, also known as the Chaco, which is mostly marshy plains with random big hills in certain spots. Paraguay also has a wet and dry season. Uruguay, for the most part, does not.
The median age is younger in Paraguay. (P- 26.3, U- 35.8) The life expectancy is higher in Uruguay. (P- 74.6, U- 78.4) And the infant mortality rate is also much lower there.

Fun fact: in the 90s, Disney sued a small food company in paraguay called "Mickey" (which also used the mouse as the logo), because of "brand use" or smth like that, however, Disney sued the lawsuit because Disney was an entertainment company, while Mickey (the food brand) was a food company, and not only that, but in the 30s Mickey got registered in paraguay, so that means they can sell their product in paraguay and only paraguay without getting in big trouble. I’m from Uruguay and I consider myself lucky to live here, I think it’s the best in Latin America. Some years ago I went to Paraguay and is a beautiful country too, there’s more vegetation and it has a much warmer climate. Here in Uruguay we have the 4 distinct seasons, it doesn’t snow but it gets cold tho

One thing is that Artigas wanted Uruguay to be a part of modern day Argentina, but as a highly decentralized federal union of provinces, while those in Buenos Aires wanted a centralized state (I guess it kinda mirrors the Federalists and Anti-Federalists in the US?). When Portugal invaded Uruguay after the Spanish left, he went into self-imposed exile to Paraguay, and never returned. His ashes were later repatriated and are buried in the main square of Montevideo.

Oriental means “eastern” or “to the east” in Spanish, and since the country is named after the River Uruguay, “Republica Oriental del Uruguay” translates to “Republic to the east of the Uruguay (River)”. “Oriental Republic of Uruguay” is a bad translation

No, it's actually call Oriental cause it originated from the Banda Oriental from the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, called that because it was the easternmost part of the colony. It lost most of it's territory due to Portuguese's Brazil expansion.

If you translate back the English name you get _República de Uruguay del Oriente_ “Eastern Republic of Uruguay” or “Republic of Uruguay of the East”, as if there was a _Western_ Republic of Uruguay out there.

I'm from Uruguay, great video! Just some small corrections. 1st of all, our national hero, Artigas, is more of a regional hero. He did not fight for Uruguay's independence, but for the "Liga de los Pueblos Libres" (League of Free Peoples), which was a proposed Confederation of the Provincia Oriental (current Uruguay, "Oriental Province"), and several argentinan provinces, with a capital that would NOT be Buenos Aires, which angered their elite and among other things (like his proposed redistribution of land) made the elites of Buenos Aires and Montevideo ally with the Portuguese to oppose Artigas, who was defeated and fled to Paraguay in 1820. So he never supported the idea of an independent uruguayan state. Neither did the 33 orientals, the plan was joining the United Provinces, our independence came as a result of British mediation with Argentina and Brazil. 2nd of all, our poverty data yeah is closer to 9%, but several independent economists and journalists here estimate it's much higher than that, because the way we measure our poverty is very heavily "income based" and doesn't factor in access to education, housing, unemployment (another one that's poorly measured), etc. And 3rd, about Paraguay, Francia was a "dictator" in the Roman sense, basically a leader that exercises power in a time of emergency; not like we use the term today for a leader who turns their back on the Constitution and governs arbitrarily. Sorry if it got too long, it was a great video, but as it's not that common that someone from abroad makes a video about us I got excited! Cheers! P.S.: Oh and one more thing, we got involved in the Guerra de la Triple Alianza (The Paraguayan War) because there was a coup d'etat. Our nationalist "blanco" President Berro was allied with Paraguay, which neither Brazil, Argentina nor Britain liked, so the liberal "colorados" led by military leader ("caudillo") Venancio Flores helped mostly by the Brazilians led an armed takeover of the government to align us with the politics of the leading empire of the time and our bigger neighbors. The Partido Nacional (the nationalists) have Colonel Leandro Gomez, who led the defense of Paysandu, one of our bigger cities, against the traitors as one of their biggest heroes, and really his memory should be more recognized by the whole country. Sadly, party politics makes that difficult. For anyone who undestands Spanish there's a great folk song that talks about the Siege of Paysandu, it's called "Paysandu" by Tabare Etcheverry. And Flores' name should live in infamy in this country but sadly not a lot of people know of this or care. One of the biggest stains on our nation's history and a debt we'll never be able to repay Paraguay.

In September 2010 I visited Montevideo, Uruguay, and a couple of days later I was able to at least see into Paraguay, at least Ruta a la Marina y Aduana Paraguaya, and Brazil from the Hito Argentino in Puerto Iguazu. I had limited time there so I could not actually enter Foz de Iguacu or Ciudad del Este, as I was scheduled to go next to Rosario in the Santa Cruz province. I hope to go back to South America at some time.

José Artigas, hero of Uruguay's independence, was given asylum in 1820 along with 200 of his men. He stayed in Paraguay even after Francia's death on a pension of $30 a month.

Only some people (especially the anglo-saxons [sorry, this is a polite critique] - perceive their worldview through "race" and unconsciously still segregate everyone) have issues with that word, not us.

Great work, great attitude, dude...Travelled to Uruguay in spring 2003 and Paraguay in fall 2004, just to check them out. They were "soccer" trips, once in the capital, go to all the football grounds and even some matches. Highly recommend Montevideo, it's like a little Buenos Aires or a smaller London, with 20 football clubs.

Daniel Galimidi and for me Paraguay is a much better country than Uruguay. Why? Because we fought hard to succeed as a country although our neighbors always tried to despise us or take advantage of our humility and loyalty. We tried to help Uruguay from a Brazilian invasion and all they did to thank us was to ally themselves against us in the Triple Alliance War in the 1960’s, killing most of our men and raping our women. Hello! This video is more than a year old, but I just want to point out that only about 500.000 people live in the city of Asunción, and Gran Asunción probably has about 2 million more people. You said it’s something like 3 million, which also doesn’t make sense if 1/3 of Paraguayans live in Gran Asunción because that would mean the country has a population of more than 9 million, when in reality it’s something around 7 million.

Muchos datos están mal o son analizados incorrectamente! Por ejemplo el gasto que hacen en educación! Dice que Paraguay invierte más xq invierte el %16 del PBI y Uruguay el %14. Pero lo q no explica, es q el PBI de Paraguay es de 40 mil millones y el de Uruguay son 60 mil millones. Ergo, Paraguay invierte 6.400millones, para una población de 7 millones de habitantes. Y Uruguay invierte 8.400 millones, para una población de apenas 3.5 millones de hab. Asíque el análisis correcto, seria que Uruguay invierte casi 3 veces más que Paraguay!!😶 Otro ejemplo, dice que Paraguay y Uruguay tienen de parecido estar sobre el Río de La Plata.
