As I recall, I think we didn’t get HD until series 5. I was working at the BBC around that time, and I vaguely remember working on the transition to HD.

As always, I encourage others to say this: try and stop the episode before the "next time" especially because it spoils a lot of story and eventual cliffhangers, they add a lot of spoiler and not in a good way, mostly ruins surrises and such. as for the quality, it doesn't get better than this until at least Series 3, though the episodes are really worth watching anyway. I must also add, if you wanna know more about his history and the war, and his race as well, then you'll have to wait. Patience is key to this show.
