Ian Botham in his prime between 1976 and 1987 was the greatest all-rounder of all time. Time after Time he produced era defining performances with the bat and ball turning games around single handedly from the brink of defeat at the highest level. After the back injury & subsequent operation in 1988 although still able to play he was unable to reach the heights of the previous 11 years.

Botham was a bludgeoning intimidating colossus of a player, once he got the bit between his teeth anything was possible.so many times either with bat or ball he could turn a game on its head when all looked lost. His batting was brutal when in full flow, and even the Great bowlers of the time found intimidating by his awesome big hitting and power,, nothing was safe when he got on top. He could also have blistering spells with the ball, he was ferocious and nasty and even the Great batsmen of the time hated facing him when he got his tail up. Yes Both was a fierce competitor and a brilliant exciting player. LEGEND

Australia had 3 no. 11 batsmen all playing in the same team on this day (Reid, Whitney, Davis). Little wonder that Australia had a brittle batting line-up back then. I can't remember if any of them were required to bat, but I do remember Ken Maclaey's bad day getting worse that night when John Emburey took a screamer of a catch on the boundary line fence off a ball which looked headed for a six. I remember Ian Botham's innings too. The match was in the balance when he came to the wicket and he took it completely away from the Australians with some relentless strokeplay against what was a relatively stingy Australian bowling attack at that time. This probably explains why they had 3 no. 11 batsmen in their team.

Whitney was a great bowler, but he was a total pillock when it came to Botham. For instance, he was a pillock in 1981 when he dropped Botham at Manchester, the latter then going on to smash a magnificent hundred taking the game away from the Aussies (he also got Botham out and celebrated like he'd just taken eight wickets: Rod Marsh was not impressed). Here, five years later, you'd think he'd have learnt. Botham smashes for six over mid off and Whitney then proceeds to sledge the shit out of the guy. I remember wishing I could tell the idiot: "Mike, Mike, he's just clobbered you mate. I'd keep your mouth shut if I were you or he might do it again." Face palms all round.

This was one of the few periods of Aussie cricket history where they lacked a quality fast bowler. Their medium-pacers held no fear for Beefy.
