I remember hearing this song for the first time over 40 years ago when I bought the Welcome to the Club LP. I had thought Ian Hunter was just another cool rocker. I realized at that moment there was much more. What a beautiful, timeless song.

Never too late. Please investigate Ian/Mott The Hoople further. He is probably THE unsung songwriter of a generation. New album out April 21, 2023 at the age of 83. It is a crime he is not a rock hall of famer.

I scream at you for sharing 'n I curse you just for caring I hate the clothes you're wearing, they're so pretty 'n I tell to not to see me 'n I tell you not to feel me 'n I make your life a drag, it's such a pity 'n I watch your warm glow palin' 'n I watch your sparkle fadin' As you realise you're failin', cos you're so good Now I don't mean to upset you But there's so much crime to get through If only I could make it easier, then I would Oh I wish I was your mother I wish I'd been your father 'n then I would have seen you Would have been you as a child Played houses with your sisters And wrestled with all your brothers And then who knows I might have felt a family for a while It's no use me pretendin' You give and I do the spendin' Is there a happy ending, I don't think so Cos even if we make it I'll be too far out to take it You'll have to try and shake it from my head Oooooh I wish I was your mother I wish I'd been your father 'n then I would have seen you Would have been you as a child Played houses with your sisters And wrestled with all your brothers And then who knows I might have felt a family for a while

Mott The Hoople, all the young dudes, produced many Ian Hunter LPs + Mick's Ronson had 2 or 3 solo LPS &played in Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Review, an in credible musician. never got his do. that's all fine&good but us as rock&roll fans knew what talent Mick was. Honest, unique in style and approach, the very definition of cool but without the trappings of pretentiousness, egotism and conceit. Mott told such great stories paired with musical swagger that drew you in magnetically. I had the honor of playing this song years ago and it never failed to win the affection of even the hardest rock and roll hearts in an audience. It's a gem in the crown of an album everybody should own.

When they first met. Ian asked Mick to do string arrangments for one of his songs, don't remember the exact name, and Ian asked how much it would cost. Mick said 20 quid. Did the arrangements on a pack of cigarettes. " Think he never got paid." - Ian Hunter

@wildcatter63 I'm pretty sure the Rebel rebel riff was written by Bowie. At that point Mick and the spiders weren't making any money. Just getting screwed over by Bowie's management. Mick even later on didn't do too great with his money. Ian once said:" If you were short on money, sit down and play cards with Mick". He didn't care about no paperwork, he just wanted to play. He'd meet someone at the bar the next day he'd be producing for them, no deal. His manager was like: " Ring me first before you do it".

Ronson was such a super side man. Lot's would pick this on the bus in the middle of the night but to have a fellow who can put his electric guitar down and play it flat top NAKED and live that well to a sold out audience....There is a fellow who is rare indeed. Put him with Ian or Bowie and his talent just goes nuts. Splendid.
