I think He'd be better with competition (I think Diaby made a difference). He needs to mix it up a bit too. No passing lines between him and the other forwards on that sheet means there were no crosses. If he does cross (even badly) it will make his dribbles inside more effective as the defenders won't know for sure that it's coming as they currently do.

Despite a largely under par performance it was still a satisfying win yesterday. And we really needed those 3 points with other teams around us (apart from Brighton) all winning - Newcastle, Bournemouth & Brentford. Tbh we did well to win as we were without Pau, Rogers, & for 70 minutes McGinn. I thought Barkley & Kamara were our stand out players. Ramsey understandably looked off the pace. I would like to see a settled back four for the next few games - Cash, Konsa, Mings, & Digne. Rogers to come back in. We’ll be without McGinn for a while. Yes. I genuinely believe that for the second half of the season our best option would be to play Digne at LB with Maatsen at LM. He is so good technically, has that pace, knows when to drive with the ball but is also one of the best we have at playing quick one touch football and is great at getting to the byline and cutting the ball back which is a type of ball Ollie loves. The biggest issue it would cause is the lack of cover and competition for Digne which is why I would suggest trying to bring back Moreno. If not it'll be far easier to find quality LB cover rather than a short term LW. Especially as I wasn't Baena for the longterm in the summer.

I was at the match, it is frustrating to see the back 3 just knocking it between themselves, think we sometimes can be a little predictable and slow as we reset into shape. Defence was good when needed. Ollie went missing, and that short ball sadly caused the goal. Maybe he's lacking a little confidence after being benched for Duran? Bailey was trying to make the runs but was doubled up on all game and it just needed a sparkle from someone. We missed Morgan. Loved that Ross just grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and thought I'm having a shot! The subs made the difference, Maatsen running down the left and the tenacity to keep going to cross the ball into the box. Best bit for me was seeing Bailey score, he NEEDED that. A scruffy 3 points, but essential. UTV 💜 💙 Ps. Luke I will totally credit you for changing how I watch the game. I was sat in the trinity,observing the their 442 shape, our shape and defensive line, the little through the line runs and watching how we tactically as a team function! So thank you

Thought people were way too negative on that game, and ignored that Leicester set up well. Sometimes we only as fans see our own downsides rather than the strengths of the other team. I still think we need to cut out these stupid goals conceded but hopefully a run of a settled back line with Mings and Konsa will help, and yes I think Maatsen should start for a few games until Digne wins his place back. I also can't wait to see what Bailey does now, but need to see more from Watkins, has had decent assists and good runs but has not scored from open play in a while. I'm of the opinion that losing Dougy and Diaby has set Villa back 12 months. As for Wally Flopkins, he's lost it, he's not the same bloke from last season and I would take 60mil for him all day everyday. That might upset some, who cares, the Villa squad need to stop carrying him and the Club needs to stop making excuses. I believe Duran has shown Watkins the Levels he needs to be at and that has blown the "Flopkins Fuse" because as it stands He could never get to Duran's potential Heights, he's already peaked out. I completely understand why Digne has played all season, we need consistency across the back line and the other 3 have chopped and changed all year, so Digne made sense. Especially with Pau next to him. For better or worse our back line looks more settled now and with Mings back we have a commanding organiser to Marshall everyone. So Maatson may be more viable now.

We bought Moreno and in that first have season he was here, he always got to the byline and crossed , which I believe Emery wants. Maatsen can do that, Digne doesn’t have the pace to do it.

3 points was the target so regardless of individual performances we have to be happy. I do think that of late Digne has been putting the ball into the box more than the right hand side seeing a ball crossed into the box has been refreshing. But also when he's getting forward it shows with Ramsay at the moment that when looking for that pass Ramsay either wasn't in space or wasn't really in a progressive position. Injuries and suspensions are now a huge worry out of the blue. But either way on to Friday, under the spectacular lights at Villa Park! UTV

One thing I felt with Buendia when he came on, is that it felt like a game that sealed his exit. Had he scored from the three decent chances he had, it might just have lifted a weight off his shoulders and maybe changed the mind of Unai/Monchi. I feel like there wasn't any conviction with Emi on any of those chances or when he was pressed on the ball. It's a real shame because he'd had a good end to the 2022-23 season and a decent pre-season last season ahead of that injury.

Thanks Luke for another very insightful analysis. For me Digne didn’t do anything “wrong” but I get your point although Maatsen has a different style of play and is very effective and deserves to start. I thought Bailey had a good game but often the ball to him meant he had to cut back and go inside rather than being able to turn and move past the 2 players marking him. I hope that goal has boosted him, it certainly looked like it as he sparkled after that and almost got a 2nd. I thought Mings had a very good game and kept Vardy quiet for most of the match something I wonder would have happened if Pau had been playing.

I do think some of these comments are a little quick to turn on Digne who to be honest was our best player at the start of the season... hence why Maatsen wasn't starting. I truly believe people should think about the idea of playing BOTH Digne and Maatsen. For me I want Rogers driving centrally with players that'll play off and run with him while eating up ground... that for me is Maatsen. For any Villa fans who didn't watch at the time (understandable) I remember him playing a string of games in preseason for Chelsea where he was used solely as a Right or Left Winger and he was brilliant. How much of our lineup needs to be the best players on the pitch vs players to fit a specific system? I have trouble understanding why we have superior players on the bench. Shouldn’t the goal be to have the best squad on the pitch to have the best chance to get a lead and/or clean sheet? All that said, I think Maatsen and Digne should both be on the pitch. Maatsen offers more attacking options than some of our starters. My belief is get the best players on the pitch and sort out the system. UTV!

I can't believe that a young talented right back like Michael kayode is not getting any game time at Fiorentina. I would love him at Aston Villa. He will cost only 15-20 million. In attack I will prefer Amad Diallo at Aston Villa over Malen.His contract is expiring in 6 months. So I think he will cost only 10 -12 million. He has provided 12 goal contribution in 27 games in all competitions.I would prefer this two players over Malen and Wesley. Majority of Dignes assists come from crosses, hes not a tricky winger like Bailey at his best so its not really fair to compare their output, also Digne has defensive responsibility. I wondered throughout the game if Tielemans should have swapped spots with Barkley. Tielemans is clearly better now in a deeper role with his lack of pace and mobility etc. Granted Barkley isn't exactly a gazelle himself but he did have a desire to get past a man, plus theres some hieght there. And I though Beundia was good when he came on too. When the passing lanes to the CMs are blocked that allows a CB to come further out with the ball. Pau is the madter at iy. I didn't think Mings vouldd do it at all but fair play he was good at yesterday. I'd worry if He tried ot too much as I think He'll get caught out but he chose his moments well yesterday and looked tidy enough. Still a downgrade on Pau but at least we dont have to cahnge the whole system. If Bailey mixed his game up a bit and actually crossed it, He'd be more effective when he dribbles in. Its easier to defend if you know it's coming and it always is. The crosses dont have to be acurate, they just have to let the defender know, you're prepared to do it.

What is going on with Watkins? He's missing so many chances it's actually horrendous. Need Durán back asap to help out up front, and actually bury clear chances. Digne's form has slightly dropped off (still very consistent) but time for Maatsen to come in and have a run of games. Bailey back with better confidence. Ramsey looked good... what do we do now Rogers and Ramsey are back? Personally, wouldn't mind Ramsey in the 10 with Rogers left. Buendía looked much better (still way off his previous levels) than previous run outs so hopefully he can continue that trajectory. Gutted for SJM to miss the Celtic game. Here's hoping we bring in a RB/CB and Malen ASAP. Ship out Philogene and Barry. Carlos will stay til summer now Pau is out.

I've been screaming out all year that Maatsen needs to start. Digne is so slow and there is so much space for our left back to exploit with both how our offense works and how teams defend against us. Every time Bailey touched the ball, there were at least two, sometimes three defenders on him almost instantly. Now he made a bunch of the worst passes I've ever seen in the match, but he was at least trying to attack. Digne is playing basically the same role on the opposite wing and when the ball got to him, there would be just one defender casually trying to cut off passing lanes and not even bothering to put pressure on him, because there was never a threat of him trying to dribble past anyone. Do people not wonder why he so often receives the ball in acres of space and has relatively little pressure on the ball immediately despite the fact that he barely moves? In basketball there's a phrase, "you're open for a reason" and it applies here. The one other thing about the goal Maatsen caused that makes him look even better is that he wins the ball and then passes it to Ramsey and then points to the open space for Ramsey to pass it into that he wants to attack. Ramsey still has to make the pass obviously, but Maatsen orchestrated every part of that goal and considering how slow our current starting squad is, playing one of our quickest players over one of our absolute slowest players just feels like a no brainer. The first thing Emery did when he came here was bring in Moreno to replace Digne. I don't know why this is taking so long.

digne is better defensively,, and against many teams he is fine,, but he is overused and that really does not help i dont think you have to start maatsen necessarily but if teams do mid block to low block and if were not getting anywhere then bring him on for the second half game is 90 mins and subs around 75 worked yesterday and maatsen did what we know he can do and its a good tactic to use given what we have available but,,,,,, digne cant play every game and maatsen needs games,,, so emery has to be clever in using both of them think maatsen will start against hammers,, our forward line is fine if olly firing and baily delivering something with luck their form will return, baily particularly looked overwhelmed with his goal so lets hope thats the catalyst and barks off olly could work for the hammers

Too many samey same in midfield, Ramsey is a waste of a pacy attacking forward player and for me I’d move him on at the end of the season.

Wasn't there a rumour suggesting swapping Maatsen and Malen from Dortmund, i really like Maatsen, we really need his pace! We shouldn't be getting shot of Martinez, Maatsen, kamara, Rogers or Duran!

Very unpopular opinion, you might think I’m crazy but I’d like to see Digne develop into playing a similar position that Pau plays and could play there whilst he’s out. I’d like to see Konsa Carlos Digne and have Maatson as the attacking full back on the left

I think Dinge was a lot better last season! I think he’s been told to pass it back if he’s not confident attacking! I also don’t think Ramsey brings much to the party! Since he was injured!!
