I was 11 yrs old when I bought my first Deep Purple album from Brashs store Melbourne Australia in early 1973. It changed my life and idea with such brilliance, It was 'Made in Japan,' the double album, Still have today. It is of the days of change and the stuff of dreams. Deep Purple shaped my early music career. Friend, Virgil D, also used your signature patterns in practice.

Well now, there's a shared memory. I'm also in Melbourne and remember well the old Brashs and Allens stores. The two leading record shops in the city. My early records came largely from there too and included Machine head, Fireball, DP in rock... They were my favorite band in my teen years and yes, I also still have those albums

Ritchie Blackmore said in various interviews that he came up with the beat for Space Truckin' from the 1960s TV (and cartoon) show theme, "Batman" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXyXeWCCoNeEoLM). Ritchie usually didn't seek opinions, but he shyly asked Ian Gillan if it didn't sound hokey. Gillan said he liked it. The space race was all over the headlines in that era, with moon landings a regular theme. In America, an expression developed called "Keep on Truckin' " that is still used a bit today. So, Gillan came up with the title, "Space Truckin '." The "Machine Head" album version is great, but the live version Purple did on "Made In Japan" is epic. I used to party with Gillan; only met Paice a couple times. What a great guy, and in my view, one of the best drummers of all-time.

One thing that amazes me in the drums for that track is what you do at the chorus. When I first listened to Machine Head, at 15, I was idling by at my bedroom. Then came the chorus, repeating "Come on! Come on! Come on!". The drums break in a way that I was momentarily fooled that the album had a scratch. I would really love to hear from you about how you approached this. Maybe for a future Q&A!

Love this channel Ian!!! i always wonder how you guys came up with the "improvisation" at the end of space trucking (i'm a huge huge fan of the made in japan version), made in japan was the first cd that i bought, i was 15 (it was the 2000's) and i already knew some of deep purple but when i heard that it blew my mind. I have never listened to something like that, interestingly enough i feel that, that very same track pushed me to love progressive rock, after made in japan i wanted more of the 70's. I ended up listening to a lot of yes and king crimson. Any way how did you guys came up with that? And specially how did you cdame up with that rhythm?
