That still makes me feel crook, im a Rabbitohs man and an old story was back when Roberts had not come out as gay but people knew, 2 blokes walked into Souths Club and George Piggins was there and they walked up and said " So George are you playing that poofter Roberts on the weekend " ? His answer was hes just over there go and ask him, 2 blokes never left so quick. I seen a Brookvale Lyons tackle Roberts obviously said something homophobic and Ive never seen a guy punch the fuck out of someone like he did and even upto a few yrs back Gary Jack, was still wanting to take Cuvil action agsinst Roberts for getting belted so bad 20 yrs later he was still getting headaches. He was as tough as they come regardless of his sexuality and you would know all about it if you called him something on the field, believe me Roberts knew what he was doing when he launched himself at Smith. But he could throw them so good that he freightened players and he is one big man and one bloke you wouldn't call something homophobic if you didnt have 10 mates with you, even then he'd still make a mess of most of them. Plus yes he was the first player to come out, but not the first gay man that was playing. But he was just another loss from the Souths nursery to Manly, we bred them back then aswell but it was Manly who would open the cheque book, but he was one tough player

I was living in Townsville when Ian Roberts came to the Cowboys. Use to see him at the gym, bloke was an absolute weapon. At that stage I'm not sure I'd seen a larger human (outside of competitive body builders and they didn't have the height he does), and was a freak in the gym. Genuinely nice bloke as well honestly

Don't have much chance when you are looking in another direction and a prop decides to put his shoulder through your jaw. Same happened in the AFL in this era. Old school fans thought it was tough. Also still homophobia even though the toughest rugby league player came out as gay two decades ago.
