Everyone likes to think their club legends were the best at something - but Wright really is a credible shout for best PURE finisher of all time. During most of his career Arsenal were ideologically opposed to chances for either team. Every week was a grim physical war with no opportunities at all, and every week he would score from a single quarter of a chance. 1-0 to the Arsenal. Tap-ins, Headers, Volleys, 1v1s, Rockets, Lobs, Solos, every type of improvised finish under the sun, and all done with a kind of...glee.

I'm here the morning after Gabriel Martinelli became the first Arsenal player since Wrighty to score in each of his first four starts for the club. Now if he can only continue to emulate this utter LEGEND.
@otaviofrnazario5 жыл бұрын
As a brazilian, I hope Gabriel Martinelli grab the opportunities by the horns. He already scored in his first premiership start. More than that, I hope he can keep his mind straight and free from shit. Many brazilian players tend to lose themselves in alcohol, women and parasite friends, especially when the expectation is very high. The expectation on him wasn't that high though. He was grown in the academy of a small club here in Brazil, named Ituano (their president played in the premiership, Juninho Paulista. Has idol status among the Middlesborough fanbase). He was playing in the biggest tournament for academy players in the country 11 months ago. He is more known now than he was at the beginning of the year, which is uncommon, considering he is in a famous, historical club of Europe. Arsenal found a true jewel. I hope you can work him well, and I hope he can value himself higher than distractions.

@@otaviofrnazario Thanks, Otavio, it's great to get the perspective of a thoughtful Brazilian football lover. Brazilian football will always have a special place in my heart: the first world cup I remember is Mexico 1970, when of course I fell in love with that wonderful Brazilian team. And again in 1982. In those media-poor times, it felt like football from another planet.
@otaviofrnazario5 жыл бұрын
@@worldlyconcerns you're welcome man. I didn't got to see any, I'm from the penta (portuguese word for 5th title) generation. But I've heard the histories from my grandpa about 70 and my dad about 82. More so, the coach of 82, Tele Santana, made my club from the heart, São Paulo FC, win the world. We beat a Cruyff coached Barcelona squad, with Stoichkov running the attack, and a Milan with Maldini, Baresi, Costacurta that was European Champion almost every year thanks to his football vision. Nowadays, figures like him are missed very much in our game (he passed 12 years ago). Our players, especially the ones raised by the youth academies of major clubs, are cocky as hell now. Don't accept the training of fundamentals, only think about status and hair styles and are, in general, poorly formed. Always with a fucked up dad or agent in his back, so the little "angel" can do no wrong (irony here)
@worldlyconcerns5 жыл бұрын
@@otaviofrnazario Interesting you should say that, Otávio. Around the time he brought Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal, I remember hearing Arsene Wenger say he thought the best strikers come out of South America these days because they typically have had to struggle against the odds to succeed in an era when many European players have opportunity handed to them on a plate. I guess the problem of entitled egocentrism is not an exclusively European one.

Henry overshadowed him in terms of goals, and he was a better all round player, but had Wright been in the 97-02 team he would have scored silly amounts of goals. I know many people won't agree but I've always thought the goal he scored against Swindon was his greatest (1.13). Anyone who has played the game knows how high the level of precision is that you need to chip a goalie who wasn't even that far off his line. The turn on a sixpence and finish is just incredible. It's a chip with real pace in it too, which makes it even harder to execute.

What's your point? Pele is black and so are Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Henry, Thuram, Davids, Eusebio etc, etc. You're really saying Ian Wright is not a legend just because he is BLACK and BRITISH? That does not make any sense, a lot of english players in this national team are black.

Lucaz99 lol. I said Black British. Not black. I can't be asked to explain tbh. His stats and special circumstances should mean that he should be just as cherished as the likes of Gary Lineker and Paul Gascoigne. But he isnt so I can only assume the obvious. But despite that, you are right.

Are you kidding me? Let's be real here Ian Wright scored a lot of goals in a pretty weak PL, (Norwich and Villa finished 2nd and 3rd in 93) the PL back in the early/mid 90s was pretty average, no English team came close to competing for the CL back then. If Wright was so good why did he only play for England 33 times? I'm not hating on him, he was a very good player for one of the biggest teams in England but to put his name along side with Pele, both Ronaldo's, Messi and Maradona is vastly overrating him.

Josh R your argument is absolutely weak wright deserve to be mentioned I the same breath as those players.. you saying that villa and Norwich finishing in the top 4 that year showed how weak the league was is a bad analysis villa was a top side in those days same for Norwich you judge them by their standards now...

Are you honestly saying Ian Wright deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Pele and Maradona? Honestly? I'm a United fan but I'll admit Giggs, Keane, Schloles, Cantona don't deserve to be named with Pele and Maradona and them 4 players were better than Ian Wright. Obviously Norwich and Villa were decent sides back in the early 90's but they weren't that good even back then, if you stuck Norwich and Villa of 92/93 in today's premier league they'd probably be fighting relegation than challenging for the title.

Great player, him and Jermaine Defoe are definitely two of the best strikers ever. Certainly the two best English ones ! COYG.

Charles Heffer That has to be a troll, Defoe better than Wright? You high?
@charlieheffer10 жыл бұрын
onelove101unity You guys are clearly biased. I try and look at things objectively, Defoe was most likely better than Wright, but it's tight. Both of them are great strikers though.
