I've had mine a little over 5 years. I noticed the fit was sloppy right out of the box. The weather seal twisted up on it right before Christmas so I sent it to New Jersey to repair it. They put a new mount on it and tightened everything up. The fit is still sloppy but the auto-focus is as fast if not faster than when it was new. They do need to come out with a MKII version though. Thanks for the video and all your videos. I've learned a ton from you!

I know you've mentioned probably buying a new one but I'd definitely say it's worth getting a quote for servicing from Fujifilm, I had my 100-400 repaired/serviced by Fujifilm after a monopod failure and it didn't break the bank. The loose mount... both my 50-140mm and 100-400mm have done that from day one of owning them.

Before moving to the Nikon mirrorless system this was one of my landscape lenses for 5 years and when I sold it it was just as good as when I first bought it. There was never any wobble at the lens mount, the focus was good, weather sealing was top notch. I shot in the pouring rain countless times, in sub zero and hot humid tropical conditions and the lens performed great. Fujifilms autofocus is not as reliable as my Nikon kit but it was good enough.

I’ve had this lens for awhile and it’s definitely a BEAST AND EXTREMELY SHARP however I’ve never used a 50-140 as a landscape lens maybe I should because is much sharper than my 55-200. Yes I too own a Viltrox 85mm and for the price and quality is good enough for me. Great blog Aloha 🙏
@ian_worth
@ian_worth 2 жыл бұрын
Many thanks, I think the 50-140 lacks a bit of reach for landscapes and is also quite a bit heavier than the 55-200. I guess its just a case of weighing up whether the extra little bit of sharpness is worth the trade off 👍

This lens is the first one I bought when I switched to Fuji (I bought it used). I absolutely love it for landscapes. It’s heavy for me but every single time I use it I’m happy. I’m constantly shocked by the quality and stability of the video (paired with x-t4) 😄 Such a good lens so far!

As others have mentioned, maybe sending it in for a tune up is the way to go. Doesn't sound like anything they couldn't fix relatively inexpensively. It sounds like it's a good sharp copy so worth the investment to keep it going for sure! I use the 55-200 for my landscape stuff due to the size and weight. It does the job, but I would have the lens you got if I still shot weddings. Thanks for the video!

Hi Ian, Great video. You should send the 50-140 lens back to Fujifilm for servicing. You cannot necessarily expect it to be maintenance free for five years! However, I would also purchase the excellent and affordable 55-200mm for landscape work. I have one and love it! It is sharp, flexible and lightweight and you don't need the fast aperture for landscapes.

Hi Ian it was interesting to hear the issues that you've been having with this lens I have also had issues regarding the play at the Mount and AF hunting etc. To be honest since buying the excellent 70-300mm the 50-140mm has been left on the shelf at home. I really love that lens as it's got great reach especially with the 1.4x convertor and is half the weight of the 50-140mm. I have considered selling the 50-140mm but still think that's the best lens for fast moving sports photography

Five year ownership too, although not as heavily used as yours. Had lens mount issues within 6 months with my first example; rotating between landscape and portrait would cause the camera to turn on and off with a clunk sound to the stabilisation. With the warranty replaced lens focus acquisition issues began after 18 months. The quality it delivers still outweighs the frustrations although the stubbornly awkward and sticking lens hood tests my patience 😅

Hi Ian. This raises, by implication at least, an important point. A lot of attention is directed at camera performance and whilst lenses get reviewed there rarely seems to be a broader assessment of the range and quality of glass for each system. I've recently bought a Sony A7R IV (used in very good condition) for the big sensor and the ability to crop aggressively. Coming from Fuji I have been pleased by the range of glass on offer from Sony and third party manufacturers. This has made me think that rather that buying into a system because of the cameras the first port of call really needs to concentrate on glass. It would be interesting to gather data on lens build quality in the real world rather than at the time of review. Potential longevity would be a good metric. Anyway my thoughts. Enjoyable interesting vid. 👍

Thanks Kane, very true. Build quality can only be assessed after a period of time, which is why I shared my experience, hopefully it will give others an idea of what to expect 👍👍

When I went to buy lenses outside of the 'kit lens' 18-55mm that came with my XT-3 I had to make choice due to cost. I wanted the 50-140 and the 16f1.4...but both were out of my budget. I got the 16f1.4 and the 55-200 (instead of the 50-140). I still kinda drool over the 50-140. It's definitely sharper than the 55-200 and I like the f2.8 throughout the range. I still have the 3 lenses, it's been 4 years now. I dunno if I will ever have the 50-140. The sloppy mount has me worried... I want the (don't laugh) 90mmf/2 macro now..Thx Ian!

I’m not sure if the linear motors are brush or brushless. You could always have Fujifilm inspect it. If it has brushes, they are most likely worn after so much use. Just need to be replaced if that’s the case.

I’ve often wondered if the o-ring on the lens mount had something to do with the loose fit over time. My 100-400 has definitely become loose over the years. Interesting you mention the Viltrox. All my Viltrox lenses fit very tightly on my Fuji cameras.

I'll just point out that my heavier lenses (50-140 / 150-600) jiggle/move a bit on the mount and both are in excellent / like new shape. I don't notice a jiggle when shooting, and certainly they don't malfunction or stop working. Some play might be normal, in other words. My 23mm in contrast is locked on tight and doesn't budge. I assume you have never dropped the lens, but maybe the rails / AF motors need a service. Otherwise it sounds like the lens is functioning normally. You didn't note any dust / fungus / haze in the barrel, so it sounds like that aspect held up great as well. Obviously, it would be great if these things just worked forever - but moving parts are always going to cause issues sooner or later.

You should consider to have a repair by Fuji. I had good experience with their service. They charged me always below 100€ and what I got back was always like a new lense. You need some patience since the lense would be away for some weeks. But in the end I think that this a far better option than buying a new or different one....

I was considering selling my XF 50-140mm a couple of weeks ago when an incident involving a tripod and playing fetch in the house with my dog resulted in the lens crashing onto a hard floor with an X-T5 attached to the other end. To my surprise, the only damage that resulted was a severe bend to the filter ring and some minor deformation of the ring behind that. It still focuses perfectly. It's a great lens all around but my plan was to sell the 50-140mm and buy the Sigma 100-400mm. I guess I'm going to have to make due until I pony up the money to have it fixed but I'll never leave a camera sitting on a tripod in the house again.

Hey there! Sorry to hear that you got issues with your copy off the lens. That does not seem to happen with all copies though. I bought my version from a wedding photographer that also used it for years. And I abused myself for a year now, and it is still like new. I have good experiences with the support of Fuji. Maybe you can ask them for support. It sounds like things they could fix.

The play on the lens mount could be the cause of the auto focus issues as the lens is not communicating with the camera. I had the 55-200 which was alright, when I shot Fujifilm. It cost £138.00 to repair my 18-55mm kit lens when I traded it in to go to Nikon Z mount, because the lens had fungus. I thought I had taken every precaution with it as I knew there was no weather sealing. Things are not always what they seem for a Pro grade lens then it should have pro grade build quality. Send it back to Fujifilm.

Question; did your lens mount ever come loose, and the screws loosen up? Mine kept loosening up, then finaly came out. Now it's into Fuji Repair, NJ, and it's going to be $ 400 to repair. I love the sharpness of the lens, but after 18 months, of not using it heavily, the loose mount thing was driving me crazy. Then it fell apart.

I’ve own the lens but not used much other than sporting events. I Owned the Canon 70-200 for many years and used much more than I’ve used Fujifilm 50-140 lens. Disappointing build quality given its professional status. I did have a Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 mkii fail after a similar time frame and usage and while I did have it repaired (at a fairly high cost) it never was quite the same. My relatively new Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8 also has some hiccups so perhaps it’s not an unusual situation given the complexity of design and electronics in today’s lenses. BTW, my Mamiya RB67 is working beautifully.

I'd be interested in a more compact 50-140 f4-5.6. Something that would be really small for travel. The telephoto zooms are just as big as full frame and I choose to shoot telephoto bright light work with Micro Four Thirsds. For low light I use my primes on Fuji (Viltrox 85mm f1.8 and Fuji 50mm f2).
