My grandmother had the exact same machine in the 80's when I was a child (R.I.P. who passed away in 2018 at the age of 97 years). She let me have a go at using it. It really was powerful; you could clearly see the dust being agitated from the carpet by the brush/beater bar. Its a shame that modern hoovers aren't made like they used to be.

Even on the highest setting, it lifts the pile and grooms it. Truly impressive.

My nanna and grandad got one of these in 1975. It sounded totally different than that one. Our old Hoover 262 broke for good three years later and when my nanna died, Grandad gave us the Dirtsearcher he had purchased in 1975. It now sounded dreadful and hardly picked up. Very soon after we inherited it, the armature went on it. As you said at the end, the 'man of the house' i.e my Father, took the machine to pieces, found the broken armature, and bought a replacement for £9, in May 1979. When this new armature was fitted, my grandparents three year old cleaner, sounded just the same as your one there. I thus took over the vacuuming of the whole house from then on, and did it weekly for nearly seven years, until i got a job so couldn't do it any more.

I could smell it from here when you switched it on

The brushroll drives forwards if the belt is incorrectly fitted around the pulley, making dirt difficult to enter the fan chamber and creates a resistance when pushing the cleaner forward.

A magnificent example Roger. Takes me back to when my grandmother bought the same model in the Coop, March 1974. The later versions of 1354A have the standard bumper fitted like this one. The height-right control is easier to adjust by taking the weight off the front axle by tilting the Hoover forwards slightly. The printed circle on some paper bags should be aligned with the circle moulded on genuine bellows

I think my grandmother used to have one for a very long time and used it in her vacation apartment after...and my mother did own one too...but for a shorter period of time. 😉 Long story short: of course a lot more noise, of course because of the simple filtration system, always did smell a little old and dusty....but....this thing stick to the carpet like nothing else it was replaced by, except for the Vorwerk years later.... ✌🏼😄 And YES....my grandparents always used to have a replacment belt in one of their many cupboards, as far as i can remember. 😅😄

Lovely machine and nice blue color too! I do Love the vintage Hoovers! Hey Roger did you notice the paper bag in this vacuum was torn in a few spots? When you were tucking the paper bag back inside the outer bag, you can see a few tears in the paper. Just thought I’d let you know so you don’t get too much dust inside that nice vacuum! 💕💕

I think that handle will be a replacement, as all Dirtsearchers came with the quick release cord hook on the top half of the handle. It may have been replaced when the seller gave it a full service. Thank you for sharing your latest purchase Roger. The 1354a is my favourite vintage Hoover. 🙂

You should do a comparison of an older Hoover upright vs a modern machine.

What would last 50 years made today? Two brands come to mind, Rainbow and Kirby. My Grandmother has a Kirby, apparently she had one before that too. I haven't seen it in a few years, but it's around somewhere.
