I'm a fan so far of these NuTube things, from Vox putting them in those teeny tiny amps to this. Sounds pretty dang good. Just need to get the pricing down 'cause I ain't paying 250 for a tube screamer.

What I am curious about is how the circuitry around the NuTube interacts. Dealing with step down current would have its own affect on he sound. I believe I read some drawbacks and advantages to this. I am guessing that there may be more experimentation and new approaches - which I welcome.

The NTS sounds so much better to me than the 808, much more hi-fi. It's more in line with what I think a drive pedal should do, especially at 18V. I'm very impressed.

Gee, this seems to address most of my wish list for a new version of the tube screamer - 18 volt operation, blend knob, less drastic EQ and more tube-like tone. The only thing that would make it perfect would be some sort of control over the bass - either a knob or a switch of some sort. I'm guessing we're going to see NuTube and other technology like it in future pedals.

Interesting that the Nu-Tube TS808 is $50 more than the Vox MV50 which is a Nu-Tube equipped 50w head that IMO sounds better.... I think that you can use the Vox head as a preamp too. It's a cool concept that its also really new, so I understand the price, but honestly, I hope that as this technology develops, it becomes less expensive.

As a stand alone Overdrive I think it sounds better than the Reissue 808........But there's already so many excellent OD/DS pedals on the market currently. It would be interesting to hear this comparison using a High-Gain tube amp...ala Boogie, EVH , Friedman, Bogner, to see how well the NU-Tube works as a front end boost.......I really dig the science/concept and hope to see it succeed in other formats besides a TS-808

I've been jamming through a *'single ended' (* *_not_* *push-pull) one> 6AQ5A output tube, and two>12ax7 preamp tubes* amp for 20 hours of the past three days. Believe me when I tell you, this NuTube Screamer *IS* a real tube pedal right down to every sweet sounding chonk and sizzle. The *Korg Nutube 6P1 Double Triode Thermionic Valve, Parallel Base, 45 x 16 x 5.6mm* costs $49.00 ea. , and probably much less in quantity, but they're not $0.49 cents. Which is more than any chip in the traditional Tube Screamer is. Plus think about it. $250 is a great investment. We all know what 1st editions bring in 20-30 years. Duh.

It has kind of a weird masking sound to it that I do not like at all, but I never liked any of the Tubescreamers and could never figure out why certain players would use them, even some of the most important players have used one at least at one point in their career. For the most part, there are no distortion pedals I like. I prefer it to be tube dist. in the amp with an external compressor like a Boss CE3 on my pedal board. I think this nutube component is something to keep an eye on. I think it is a really cool technology, and there's a homemade pedal on youtube with one that sounds good when the gain is down really low.

sounds good. I think the price point is a bit agressive, though. Ibanez may find they need to adjust it a bit. $249 for the new one, when a guitarist could go $179 for a TS808, or $99 for a TS9. That's not even considering purchasing one of the older ones, second-hand. Might end up being a tough sell to most. I'm a bit torn, myself, though. Certainly like the tone and the updates.

Stewart White I wouldn’t buy it. Buyers need to stop buying in to overpriced pedals, it just lets the pedal makers do what they want. Obviously this excludes boutique and small brands, but Ibanez has too much to be selling a $250 overdrive that’s slightly different than their previous $100 overdrives
@StewartWhite

Yeah, that's kind of my impression. I almost think they would have been better to just name it something else, and not try to ride the success of the TS.

Yeah, I would say, for a mass-production company like Ibanez, the 808 should be more like $150 and this new one should be more like $180. It’s frustrating that the big companies who can make things cheaper started charging more in reaction to smaller builders who HAVE to charge more. That should not be how the market works :(

@riffsnreviews 6 жыл бұрын
Not to defend Ibanez, because this pedal is priced a bit too high but then so is the ts808... But as Dissonant Timbers pointed out, those nu tubes are priced ridiculously high as well compared to a 12ax, and of course even more so than diodes, for the common buyer that is (cheapest i've seen is 35 usd), way cheaper for a manufacturer, but I'd imagine it does add a large % on production costs, but on something that is already overpriced in it's standard form soooo.... But that blend knob is sweet

I just bought a TS808 replica for £32 from a guy on ebay. He builds them himself to a very high quality. It has the original JRC4558D op-amp and it sounds beautifully grainy and sweet. I bought it just to try it out not expecting it to sound like the old originals for such a low price but it knocked my socks off. He does different versions also. When I heard of the NUtube technology I was quite excited for the possibilities hoping there will be a high gain preamp with multi channels but I have not seen anything like that just yet.

Hey, Don! Thanks so much for reaching out. The Nu Tubescreamer is equipped with an actual vacuum tube, but much smaller than a traditional tube that you would find in a typical tube guitar amp. All other Tubescreamer pedals use a traditional diode to achieve the clipping and gain we all have come to love. These are now discontinued, but they are still very cool pedals. Put a tube in a pedal to sell to guitarists lol. They could probably make the TS sound better but it's probably such a lucrative product for Ibanez, all they do is create a 'better' product that is sufficiently different to not harm sales of the original. Like, ''Yeah. we know it sounds pants but you lot buy it, so instead of admitting it's pants, we'll make a better version but call it something else and make it 3 times the price!'' Solid state circuits can also sound good! just depends on quality of components used. So you could run the orig TS against a non valve pedal costing $250 and that too would probably sound better. I recently compared a Radial Tonebone Classic (tube) Vs Bogner La Grange and the La Grange was way more amp like and generally better sounding. Also, op amp distortion like in jcm 800, 900's is solid state clipping (like a non tube pedal) on top of tube gain - so add a solid state OD pedal to your tube amp and you've got a gain 'structure' similar to how high gain amplifiers do it. Not against tube pedals, just don't want us guitarists to fall for it just because it has a tube in it!
