Pretty subtle differences. I slightly prefer the TS-9 in this lineup, though I'm sure you could dial in any of them to get what you're looking for. So I will stick with TS Mini for the smaller footprint.

Great demo. The real benefit of the NTS is that it can handle humbuckers when used as the only gain source (which none of the others can).

I dig the sound of Nu Tube in this video. Always wanted a TS that didn't mix the clean sound back in. Never liked that aspect when using it as an OD. As a boost it works though. The ability of the Nu Tube to adjust that clean blend is worth having one it seems.

Thanks Brian, that was interesting. In past demos the nu-tubes sounded odd to me, in this one I thought they were a little smoother, more amp-like (whatever that means), though they also sounded like they had more low end. I wonder how they would compare to your Clarksdale with the bass notched up or to (my favorite TS clone) the Way Huge Green Rhino MKII also with more bass. Anyways, great to see you back on the Google!

The trick here would be to, have recorded a preceding demo showing you switching between the three pedals, but actually only running the signal through the TS9. Wait for all the 'I hear more transparency from the NuTube pedal' and 'the TS9 is 'gnarlier'. Then follow up a day later with this demo where you really do switch between them........ You really did switch here didn't you?

Brian I had a question about the Nutube overdrive. If I understand correctly, the difference between hard clipping and soft clipping, is that soft clipping allows some of the clean signal through (please correct me if I'm wrong), while hard clipping does not. That being said, does the Nutube with the mix knob fully on the overdrive side effectively become a hard clipping pedal?

I would go for the ts9 out of the three. It’s difficult judging what they would sound like in the mix when just listening in isolation like this. The nu tube sound a bit more scooped and slightly more compressed and may sound the best when heard in isolation, but I’ve had to adjust my hearing to think of what would cut through the mix in a live band context, so...my vote is the ts9, I think the nu tube would be a bit ‘muddy’ but the od808 is pretty close to the ts9 but not quite there.
@delosreyesgino
@delosreyesgino Жыл бұрын
I'm a bit confused though. Nutube sounds more open and more headroom and that sounds good to me. When you say scooped is it mid scoop? Will mids go through better than highs? In my experience highs cut through a bit more but as the video goes on I'm liking the other two more haha. I have the ts9 anyway I feel like you have either of the 3 you don't need the other two. You can just fiddle to get the tone you want.

Ooo, I like that nu tube. It’s nice and squishy...in a good way. I never understood this weird obsession some guitarists have with “openness” and “transparency” in their drives. If I want transparent compression, I’ll kick on the cali76. The tube screamer is for boosted squish....that’s what it does best.

Thing is those who doesn’t like the original TS might like the NuTube. While the TS9 are great, I for one likes the SD1. (Yes similar sounding to the TS9 but there are differences in the circuit especially on the tone) I thought the SD1 was brighter than the TS9. Which in turn makes me like the NuTube Screamer as I hear it a bit brighter than the normal TS
@AlexRamosDrTaz
@AlexRamosDrTaz 5 жыл бұрын
The SD1 uses asymmetric clipping, which gives it a slight bit more crunch on the upper mids. It also sounds better to me in lower gains than the TS9/808. It doesn't have that clean amp/crunch mix to my ears... more of a slight tube amp clip IMO. That, plus the brightness you pointed out is why some guitarists prefer pushing certain amps with the SD1, like a JCM 800 or some other Marshall.

The nutube sound more like an over drive in an amp to me than a tube screamer I wounder if it would sound good with the TS-9 after it with the ts9 gain all the way down and the volume all the way up. Would it make a good "dirty channel" on a clean amp like a VOX mv50 Clean?

I understand the benefits of a tube O.D, but I'm perfectly happy w/ the signature sound of TS-9. The 808 lacks the signature quality of the TS-9. Plus it goes so well w/ your Ecstasy/Euphoria. Yes, I'm going to keep pushing that pedal until gets the attention it deserves. The king of all transparent O.D's! :) (stacks w/ anything, but way cooler on it's own).

The Nutube sounded most “amp” like to me in this scenario (Through a very clean amp setting) Most of us know the classic tube screamers really come alive through a slightly broken up or a higher gain amp to get more sustain, mid bite and tighten the sound up. Nutube seems pretty nice! I am now a bit more intrigued to try one

That schematic may be a little wonky looking, but it does explain the sound differences- the "clean" isn't really a clean blend, it just blends between the normal TS clipping stage and the NuTube clipping stage, and the asymmetrical clipping in the TS clipping stage will give it 1) more gain and 2) a different clipping characteristic. It's definitely a bit more aggressive sounding than the TS9 or the OD808, and changing the power supply to 18V seems to have made more of a difference with it than the others. Personally, I'm not gonna rush out to buy one, since I'm perfectly happy with my modded TS clone already and I mostly just use it as a boost anyway and therefore wouldn't get as much out of the different clipping characteristics (which is pretty much negated at low gain settings), but it is an interesting pedal and just different enough from the normal TS to make it worthwhile.

The Nutube sounded the most amp-like to me. Now, sometimes that's not necessarily what you want from a TS style circuit, right? You often just want a TS to do what TS's do. And I totally get what you mean by pedal "feel", Brian. It was really interesting to know what they felt like, what is impossible to translate through the audio itself.

To me, they all sound great. They also all sound very similar, so much so that I don't think the price of the "New Tube" justifies it's cost. I own 4 Tube Screamers and love the way they sound, but would rather spend more money on a WAMPLER overdrive - Just To have something different and more versatile. ***I watched this video twice. The first time with my phone speakers as the sound source and I couldn't really tell the difference. The 2nd time I used my V-Moda Crossfade M-100 headphones and there is a difference, but like I said - it's minimal. Lastly, thanks Mr. WAMPLER for another intuitive and enjoyable video.

I have the Ibanez NuTube as well as a TS mini and a TS808 variant by Greenchild. Been experimenting a lot with different configs on all of them. Not sure which I am completely sold on yet... I do really like the wet/dry signal adjustments on the NuTube, and it also seems to sound a little cleaner with a tad more mid-range punch... The mini, which supposedly has the coveted JRC4558 IC chip, can get really grungy, but it can sound a little too dark unless there is some clean boost on it. My Greenchild K818 is modeled more on the Maxon 808 OD, but has its own voice that would be hard to compare with other TSs. The only one I have not tried is the Ibanez TS 808... not sure how much better it would sound than what I already have. I tend to stack my ODs, so I think it really comes down to the guitar and amp combo you are using and the type of music you are playing.

Hey Brian, I think (after seeing your demo) that to be fair you should turn de Mix knob down(halfway?). Clearly the Nutube isn’t letting as much of “unaffected” signal pass through. I think the designer decided to give the user the option to reach more extreme settings where the classic tubescreamers has that parameter (mix) fixed.

I think the Nu-Tube sounds like it's worth having. I heard a little less high end in it than the other two. The 808 sounded like it distorted less, but that could've been how it was set--IDK. I tend to judge things by max gain first, to see how noisy it might get (some pedals aren't so noisy, in my experience) and then dial it back to hear if the other sounds are usable. I don't really understand how a distortion could change how a guitar feels in my hands, so stuff like that is lost on me. I tend to focus in more on tone, how complex chords like Cmaj7sus4 or C7b5 come out, etc. I'd really like to hear the Nu-Tube with other pedals or stages. As a reference point, I have an Effectrode Helios, which is a fuzz followed by a tube stage in one box. It sounds pretty good, but also different from my other fuzz pedals. I've always hoped to be able to hear an all-tube fuzz--that is, tube diodes creating the fuzz, or whatever. This VF tube technology might actually make such a thing more feasible. I'm not so savvy, though, so I couldn't possibly be sure. In any case, to continue the example, I'd like to hear something similar to my Helios, but with a VF tube stage or two. Another thing to try would be my DOD Classic Fuzz (better than most to my ears) with this Nu-Tube in either series order or a parallel arrangement. VF seems too new in applications like this to judge too negatively. I'd think that much more experimentation would be needed first. So, I'd get one just to see what the possibilities are.

The NuTube seems to be warmer than the TS9, but I may agree with you in that it seems more 'spongy' in its 'reaction', not quite as responsive as the other 2, but then to be honest about it I'd have to place it into my own environment to say for certain as to how I would find it in comparison to the TS9 or OD808. Intriguing contrast, nonetheless. And I based upon what I've heard to date w/o my own actual test drive, I'd say the NuTube TS is at least an improved and nice alternative to be seriously considered.😎 Did, find your own insights into the new application of the technology as it is being applied here and I'm also guessing in that one relatively new VOX amp as well as probably a few others, do not know for certain about that Blu-Tube amp, very useful, at least in gauging the plethora of options that are continually becoming available within guitar amplification related gear alone. 👍 In today's quite deceptive use of hi tech terms & acronyms in marketing to the lo info consumer, it certainly pays to be in the know as much as one can manage to thwart off pointless investments, and that is in all walks of life, not just the music industry. So, when are you gonna attempt a new drive pedal with the technology or other similar mini-tube technologies, if ever, as I would like to think that you would eventually find a new niche within which to apply it toward some artists' demands. 🤨 And not by no means to diminish what you've managed to provide the guitar community within the realm of especially, overdriven & distortion tones.

My idea for a pedal, which is a patented secret, is to call it Tube Warmer. The circuitry is deceptively simple. It's a tube screamer in a black box with a visible tube, not connected to anything but it is back lit by and LED that changes color depending on how hard you hit your guitar strings. The theory being is that people listen with their eyes - yes, this is an observed phenomenon. Millions are to be made.

What I'm wondering about is if I'm crazy, because I think you can get a tone where a cleanish tone is kind of mixing with a slightly dirty tone. I used to have an old Peavy amp that did that. I wouldn't call it edge of break up either, because it was breaking up but some of the cleaner tone was still very apparent. Is this type of sound really possible with the Tubescreamer? It kind of sounds like it. I've never really been able to get that sound out of a pedal, and most amps don't do it as well as that Peavy...

Here's a question for you kids. The difference between the TS-9 and the TS-808 lies mainly in the output buffer stage. The TS-808 would appear to provide more loading of the signal, with the consequence being that it "warms it" a bit. But loading is often a function of the cable length that must be overcome. How different do the 9 and 808 sound when using cables of different lengths, and especially very different capacitance? Is it the sort of reputed difference that simply disappears the moment you stick a buffer stage of some sort between the TS and the amp? I'm curious. If any of you have experience with this sort of thing, please report back.

We know MORE about pedals NOW in 2024 than we did back when this video was released, thanks to the internet. You never mentioned concepts such as playing speed out of the pedals. For example, you play a chord and you listen for how long it takes for the notes to appear out of the speakers 🔊 You take note if you play the chords faster or slower and you notice if you can speed up the voltage ⚡️ going through the amplifier or if the amplifier can't be pushed into faster performance. So, can you speed up or slow down the song. Lots of amplifiers won't allow the song to be sped up cause it takes time to produce the chords. It's as if the sound comes out of the speakers 🔊 at a steady rate and the sound blossoms into the chord and it makes a pose and then goes passed you. Some pedals for example, the mxr GT overdrive, have the ability to speed up the amplifier and produce chords faster and slower, depending on your playing speed. The MXR distortion + pedal doesn't have this performance ability. If you play the chords faster into this type of pedal, the amplifier doesn't respond and the chords emit at a steady consistent rate. We've had pedals named after car performance, for a long time but you haven't grasped this concept yet. Playing songs faster or slower IS a major part of music. You seem to think music is robot 🤖 like stuff. Some pedals don't respond to getting pushed with faster playing. It takes time for them to produce the notes and they seem to do a pose in the air. Doesn't matter what you do, you can't seem to speed up or slow down the mid air posing of the chords. If you play faster those chords get destroyed or disintegrated. So, you either don't know about playing songs faster or slower OR you chose to omit this playing aspect from the video 🤔

Thank you for your comment. First, it’s important to clarify a few points: 1. Latency in Pedals and Amplifiers: The idea that pedals or amplifiers can “speed up” or “slow down” the output of sound based on how fast you play isn’t accurate. What you’re describing sounds like latency, which is the delay between when you play a note and when you hear it through the speakers. In a well-designed pedal or amplifier, latency is minimized to the point that it’s imperceptible to the human ear, typically in the milliseconds range of digital, much much faster if analog (like speed of light fast). This is true regardless of whether you’re playing slowly or quickly. 2. Pedal Responsiveness: When it comes to how pedals respond to different playing dynamics (such as playing faster or slower), this is usually about the pedal’s ability to handle different input signal strengths and frequencies. Some pedals are designed to respond more dynamically to changes in playing intensity, but they don’t literally change the timing of your playing. They might compress or distort the signal differently based on input, but they don’t create a lag or speed up the sound. 3. MXR Distortion +: The MXR Distortion +, like many classic distortion pedals, introduces a specific type of clipping and tonal coloration. It doesn’t alter the temporal aspects of your playing. If you’re hearing something that feels like a time lag or “posing” of chords, it might be related to other factors in your signal chain, such as the amp settings, effects like delay, or even your perception due to how sound is amplified in the space you’re in. 4. Music and Technology: I certainly agree that music is much more than mechanical timing-it’s an art form with emotional and expressive dimensions. Technology, including pedals, is here to serve the creative process, not constrain it. That’s why understanding how these tools work helps musicians make better choices for their sound. If there’s a particular experience you’re having with your gear that doesn’t seem to align with this explanation, I’d be interested to hear more about it. Perhaps we can explore the specifics of your setup to understand better what’s happening.

something i've yet to see, and would like to, is with the 18v, and the much more volume it produces, how much more push does it give a dirty channel, and how does that compare to say, the ts9 or ts808 at full volume, how much more 'saturation' are you going to be getting with the more volume?

I never liked the original Tubee screamer, i fell in love with my Nu-tube and I gain stack it with my Zakk Wylde overdrive, sounds amazing. The dynamics of the Nu-tube is way better and more much needed low end.I run mine on the 18V power for that added headroom. I also run mine through a ab/y switcher box in to two amps, a Marshall jcm800 and my Carvin X50B.

they all have good points, to my ear through the Marshall, the NuTube, when you're arpeggiating chords the higher notes sound a bit muddy

Its almost like you can still hear a bit of the clean sound with the ts9. The 808 is inbetween in terms of sound of the 9 and nutube.

Honestly I like the Nu-Tube the best. It really kinda takes out all the nasty hi-mid frequencies that the TS-9 has and just overall has a smoother sounding EQ overall. Definitely a lot nicer sounding. Now, would I pay full price for one brand new? Nope. If a good deal came up for much cheaper? Then I would get it. It's funny you're playing the overdrives through the DSL because the first time I tried the Nu-Tubescreamer was through a DSL and I thought it sounded terrific through that amp.

They all have their own lovely sound. So hard to decide which one is the best. Nutube has that aggressive trebly tone while od808 has some kind of a smooth trebly punch. Ts-9 on the other hand has that balance between clean and gain nicely and is rather soft.

Jeez, there's really not much between them at decent gain is there? I kinda hoped they'd take the NT in its own direction a bit more if I'm honest.

actually listening on studio monitors (Yamaha hs8)... I like the nutube, just not as a tube screamer. Also seemed to be less bass roll off on the nutube (could be great if thats what your looking for)

TS9 has that shimmer, Nu Tube sounds good but doesn't sound like a real TS to my ears. It's like it's too tubey if it makes sense. I don't like the OD808 so much, prefer a true 808. But TS9 wins. I agree with your breakdown. Great video, thanks!

Ibanez NTS, in fact, sounds incredible. However I had to take it off my pedalboard because it introduced far much more noise compared my TS9 or TS808. Maybe I had a lemon, I don't know.

i could use any of them and get a desirable result. i have a TS-9 and a couple boss SD-1's. SD-1 is hard to beat, especially stacked with BD-2 or even DS-1. off topic, i bought an MXR custom badass overdrive on a whim used (the gold one) and have to say it really surprised me. they did a good job on that one.

From the sound clips i've heard, i'd buy it. I love the Maxon 808 but, the Nutube intrugues me. I'll probably stack it with a tone shaper like the Wampler Black '65 to get a little flexibility but, i'm really intrested in this Nutube Screamer. Great vid Brian! 🤙🏽

Brian, I want a TS808 style pedal that I can adjust the "midhump" and "low end cut" tone shaping to match amplifiers better. An 808 is pretty much my go-to overdrive but with some amp/guitar combos it simply removes too much low end and pushes the mids more than I'd like. Is there anything from your current range of offerings you could recommend?

I don't know about Wampler, but I've always liked my early '00s DigiTech Bad Monkey for times when I wanted the TS sound and control the amount of the bass roll-off.

The BM isn't bad, but IMO the Hardwire Tube Overdrive improved on that circuit. Plus, you can choose between the two modes on it. The output on that one is more than enough to push many tube amps into overdrive, even at 0 gain.

Nutube seems to have a wider Q in the low-high range which gives it a more natural sound than the tubescreamer which to me has a notch filter sound. The OD 808 sounds closer to the Nutube. No clear winner of course because they do what they do :) But I’d find the Nutube easier to deal with than the tubescreamer by Ibanez. 1. Nutube 2. 808 3. Tubescreamer Or you can reverse the order depending on your knowledge of the Ibanez. I’m not as familiar with high gain tones as most of you. Thanks for the comparison! Peace

I've tried everything but the NuTube with a 98 Bogner Ecstasy 101b (Green and Blue Channel only) which this particular build year has all military Spec components + -1% parts make a difference, Rubicon Black Gate Caps and Mercury Magnetics Transformers with a wax dipped Paper core choke by Mercury, I've got it tubed with Wing C NOS EL34 Power tubes, I have no idea at the moment what preamp tubes I'm using because I have switched them out so often. I also have a Friedman BE-100 with the same power Tube Array, What a great sounding Amp as well, I sold my SLO because it was just a bit too bright and the sweet spot is between 10-11 o'clock which you must know is too damn loud for someone who cares about their ears. I've known Mike for years and he is a great guy. I picked my SLO amp up when Bill was building all the amps up in Seattle but I have known him since the early 80s when He was in L.A. Great guy, great amp, just seem to like a little darker sound. The TS-808 is killing everything So far. I did buy two different Maxon's and neither of them sounded good to my ears, even though they are pretty much the exact circuit. I really tried to give Maxon a chance but was really dissatisfied with the build quality, housing and it just felt cheap. They were much noisier and fairly unusable as well. Yes I know the history of Maxon and Ibanez so If anyone should be able to build as good or better TubeScreamer type overdrive it should be Maxon, The Ibanez stuff seems more robust for sure. I should also say I prefer the JRC4558 chip over the Texas Instrument chip that was used in both the Maxon and Tube Screamers when obtaining JRC4558s became scarce from the Japan radio company. I also think It's important to know that I only use these at unity so no boost or cut, I actually use it for feel on some of my solos. The TS-808's and TS-9's add a magical feel when you get a really good one. I also think Its important to mention that I believe Ibanez and Maxon are most likely using + - 10% parts so it is really difficult to set them at the exact same setting and expect to get the exact or noticeably better results. I do find it a bit strange that Korg, Known for Keyboards, is a strange pairing. Korg has unsuccessfully tried to break into the guitar market for ages. I've ran several music stores and had just about everything that anyone would ever like to own or play on so I tend to be a great deal more picky than the average end user. On a side note I picked up one of your Faux Tape Echo V2 and it had some strange artifacts while doing some troubling things in front and in the FX loop of both amps, so I did have to send that back to Amazon. I think amazon sold me one that was used and the prior owner just simply didn't take care of it. The last store I ran sold a great deal of Wampler pedals and I recommended them to all of my gearhead friends so I must say that I think my experience with your Faux tape echo was a isolated incident. On a positive note I did get your Ego Compressor and it is working out great on clean and super fun for leads. I run that in front of my amp before everything and it is on about 30 percent of the time when I am on clean or pushed tones. I just use a smidge on pushed so I can stay dynamic. Great job on your build quality for sure.

I like the 2 Two Notes Torpedo Captor boxes. I could use a 2nd one! I discovered a new way to use the Two Notes Torpedo Captor. I was using it with my Music Man HD150. I figured out that using the line out on the Two Notes Torpedo Captor, I can send it to the stereo fx input then feed to stereo amp or mixer with the speaker Sim non-effected dry to blend with stereo signals. Since there is no fx loop for the Music Man HD150.
