Putting these pedals side by side and comparing them both. Hopefully some of you will find this useful if you were deciding on which one you'd prefer!
The Plumes is on Mode 3 on the toggle switch. On the manual it says "Mode 3 is an asymmetrical silicon diode arrangement similar to the stock screamer but with more output and clean clarity." I figured mode 3 would be the best to put up against the TS808.

The character of the EQD sounds more like the guitar itself. Sort of in its idealized, acoustic form. The TS seems to muck all the tones together a bit.

Sean Fanning That’s the inherent beauty of the tube screamer, man. Is it 100% faithful to your sound? Nope. Does it hack off a load of high and low end? Yup. But does it emphasize some of the most pleasing harmonics? YUP. Does it place your guitar perfectly in the context of the band? YUP. I love the plumes and it’s a beautiful mod to the design...but there wouldn’t be any mods to the design if tube screamers weren’t among the most highly regarded overdrives ever built

I have both pedals, I like both.. the Plumes is possible the brightest overdrive I've ever heard..that tone knob should be turned down to the last and broken off
@Lucas_Arredondo
@Lucas_Arredondo 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, I hardly ever keep the tone knob that high, mainly either all the way down or 80% of the way there. It just becomes unnecessarily bright after a certain point that I don't see what you could possibly need that for. But it's nice to have it there I guess.

Both sound great in different ways. They don’t sound very similar honestly. I feel like so many companies try to “fix” the tube screamer but making it less muffled, less mid heavy, etc… but then once you make all those changes you just end up with a different pedal 🤷🏻‍♂️ I like the TS 808 for that gnarly unrefined growl mixed with that sweet singing tone. Plumes sounds refined, clear, and versatile, with a decent amount of growl to play with. Nice sound, just not a TS to my ears. Not sure why everyone calls it a clone.

I bought the Plumes recently. Mostly due to its variety. It's Amazing. If anyone here wants to emulate the darker sound of the TS9 on the plumes, just roll off to taste the tone knob on your guitar. Remember that your tone knob is a high cut filter. It sounds the same if not better due to its openness.

I have both and the Plumes sounds nothing like the Tube Screamer, which is funny because people often compare the two. The Plumes has a lot more volume, gain, frequency range, and clipping options available. It's a lot more transparent and a bit ratty-sounding, which makes it great for chord work and boosting a clean or dirty amp. The Tube Screamer compresses your tone and pushes the mids. It's inherently a muddy sound, but it excels at juicing a cranked amp and is great at making single note riffs and solos pop in a band setting.

Tubescreamer is anything but muddy unless it’s places after any other drive pedals then it flops. Both are great to have on your board.

I’m a keyboard player looking to add subtle drive to some of my sounds. I find a lot of drive pedals get too hot too quickly with keys... which do you find to be more “tame-able” or subtle I guess?
@Lucas_Arredondo
@Lucas_Arredondo 4 жыл бұрын
Look for transparent overdrive pedals if you want to retain your keyboard sound, preferably with high head room. If we're talking about the two pedals in this video, I would say stay away from the tubescreamer, it colors your sound in a way you may or may not find pleasing with your keyboard.The Plumes has way more clean headroom and has overall more clarity than the tubescreamer. Hope that helps!
@manifestgtr
@manifestgtr 4 жыл бұрын
The Timmy and the Nobels Odr mini might be good places to start. Of all the drives I use, those are the most tame and least “tonally destructive”. If you’re an eqd fan and want some buttons to play with, the palisades is phenomenal. It runs the whole spectrum from squishy and fuzzy to completely tame and inoffensive

Try the EHX Operation Overlord. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWHMpWyVopKHoJI It has a dry control to blend the original signal in so it's perfect for keyboards. There is a nano version of it too.

I’ve had both, much prefer the TS808. The Plumes is too loud, impossible to get unity gain. The second you turn the volume on, it’s cranked.

I achieved unity gain with no issue. Bear in mind, there's more headroom in the Plumes, so maxing out the volume isn't the best option.

I have the plumes now and it defenently has a lot less compression than a tube screamer it won’t replace my tube screamer but I’m certainly keeping the plumes. The TS has the sound of a tube screamer but with the sound of your amp but doesn’t have that thick sound that comes from the compression. I’m not disappointed though. It’s really nice it’s 3 pedals in 1 basically. I like the first setting the most. I get the sound of my amp with some added sparkle and bite. One of the most transparent pedals I have ever used and I will always keep it, absolutely incredible. If I’m in tubescreamer mood I will use a tube screamer though

@phantasmagora6542
@phantasmagora6542 2 жыл бұрын
No. The Plumes has way more headroom. If you're a metal player, it's really obvious in how both pedals handle palm muting. There's a very specific way the TS compresses that gives this thick, spongy attack when you chug. The Plumes doesn't do this as well because its headroom is too high, although Mode 1 will come close. I do like the Plumes better for lead work though - lets the tone of your guitar shine through and doesn't muddy up during fast passages.

@@phantasmagora6542 contradictory to what I previously said I completely agree with you. The plumes was alright and could sound good as a boost but saying that I boost using my guitars volume knob. I sold the plumes lol. Beautiful looking pedal. I actually have a pedal to end all overdrive pedals which iv had for the past 6 months. J rockkets Blue Note. Hot setting has the same thick chewy squishiness of a tube screamer but can go much cleaner and doesn’t really have the midrange honk. The other setting is a transparent overdrive. Better than a timmy and so easy to dial in a sound I like. Works with any amp I put it through. Its by far the best overdrive pedal iv had. Its like both settings are both my favourite pedals and iv been playing for nearly 20 years! It weighs a ton and is huge though but its a beautiful looking pedal
