I have 6 tube amps ranging from 5 watts to 100 watts. They behave the same on all of them. I don't have a Katana. That said, good job as usual sir. Love you videos!!!

After listening to several of these side by side versus videos, I decided to get the TS-9, and I don't regret it. Whatever differences there are, they are subtle. Not worth the extra $50 for the ts-808 in my opinion. However it's just an opinion, so enjoy which ever you like! I really like how the TS preserves the natural sound of the guitar/amp while just adding some extra drive, and if you crank up the tone, some extra edge. Oh, and also the great harmonic squeals that jump off the frets and out your speaker!

It's been a childhood dream for 15+ years to get a modded keeley tubescreamer so it was definitely worth it for that, though I do wonder how much better it'd sound side by side with any old tubescreamer. It does at least do more, because it has the regular tubescreamer setting and a "hi" mode which is Robert Keeley's original tubescreamer mod. It's the best sounding pedal I've ever had though. It just makes my strat sing. I can sound like SRV even through a cheap practice amp with it. Love it. Even makes my les Paul copy sound fantastic, very creamy. So yeah if it weren't for the childhood dream thing I would have just got a cheap tubescreamer clone from whichever company, but I'm very happy with this

Circuitwise the difference are only two resistors which do not effect the sound audibly. The slight difference you are hearing is most probably from the tolerance of the pots which can be up to 20%. Also, there will always be a slight difference in how you mount the knob on the pots. So aligning the knobs does not make sense. You have to see if you can make them sound the same by dialing. The might be the same difference between two 808s and two TS9s. :-)
@tds21173 жыл бұрын
It’s ironic to me that the TS9 is brighter with slightly more low end at one specific setting, with everything else being virtually identical, but it’s supposedly the one. Reminds me of countless Rat LM308 videos. There’s no real difference whatsoever that can’t be made up for by just adjusting the filter on the modern one slightly, yet people keep modding it. I think most of this is just guitarists being pretentious. “It’s true bypass!”, say people who don’t realize how necessary buffers are. These are all just buzzwords.
@michaelinglis85163 жыл бұрын
2 things. All my pedal builds that require buffers utilize the TS9/808 input an output transistor style buffers as they are in my opinion hands down as good as it gets. Klon style opamp buffers might be more complicated but they aren as transparent as the ts9/808 buffers in every experience I've had with them. The ts9/808 buffers get in the way the least while still buffering the signal incredibly efficiently. And 2nd. The difference between an OP07 opamp and an LM308N in the Rat circuit is quite big in my opinion. The slew rate changes the feel completely. It's more apparent when done with other mods like red led clipping diodes or diode lift etc but still very apparent without them. I personally hated the OP07 in the new rats. I tried for 2 years to get on with it to no avail. It's too efficient thus too bright thus too brittle. And diming the LPF doesn't result in the same tone or feel as doing the same with an LM308N. Each of us has a different level of discerning ears. If you regularly build pedals the difference might be drastic compared to a beginner who's never played an original rat. Also modern rats are built with deplorable quality control and parts specifically the wiring and in some cases the pots etc. If you can solder they are worth fixing up though. I mod mine to have the stock option 1N4148 option, no diode, and 2 red leds (my favorite hands down) as well as swapping the OP07 for an LM308N but with the other mods the OP07 becomes useable just not as ideal tonally as a real LM308N. Also and this is important for a very versatile rat and it's what sets my modded rats apart. I add two on off on dpdt toggle switches. One for each network that controls the clipping character of the high and low end. So for both switches left is stock. If you put them in the middle it cuts out the respective high or low gain clipping frequency networks (so you only cut out one at a time). Cutting out the high end network gives you the classic ruetz mod. Cutting out only the low end network gives you just a higher end distortion/fuzz that is more like the stock op07 rat to my ears. Then when either or both are in the right position it selects a potentiometer (1 for each network, I use B1k's for each to good effect) this allows you to dial in the frequency of each network and it makes the rat INCREDIBLY versatile and so so so much more useable. Everyone who's tried it always sees it as a much needed improvement. Dont like rats? You'll be a convert after these mods. The pots allow you to dial in much warmer tones or brighter if youre into that sorta thing lol and everything in between. So you can ACTUALLY use it as a boost, overdrive, distortion or fuzz like it promises on the tin when you buy the pedal. As with many pedals the circuit is solid but it needed more parameters to control in order to really use it to its fullest potential. With those mods I became a proponent of Rats and I wasnt much a fan prior (although I did like bud box versions I'd played, specifically recreations of that circuit). Anyways take all this with a grain of salt, to each their own. If you're interested in any of those mods or would like to hear the finished pedal let me know and I'll try to put together a video. And for the mods I would happily walk you through it. But maybe you're already a builder, if so I highly recommend giving them (specifically the pots on the high and low gain networks but the no diode and 2 red leds a la turbo rat are incredibly useful mods) a shot. The no diode mod is a little bright on it's own but with the ability to shape the high and low gain networks through the pots you end up with an excellent boost in the no diode position. Anyways that's all lol.

maybe the only difference, for me, is at maximum volume, I think the TS808 has a bit more sound output, otherwise they are very similar
@akasgsvirgil95032 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure if sending a looped signal to the OD pedals rather than an actual signal from the guitar itself is a good way to demo these pedals. You can still hear the original clean tone through the grit layered on by the pedals. Had the guitar been plugged direct into the pedals, the sound would've been much different. Think of it this way. You record a guitar track using a clean tone and then try to add the grit to it during playback. Its doesn't work.

Great video and nice comparison. However, I want to mention that both the Ts9 and the 808 are not true bypass. That means even when switched of they alter the sound. On my one test I detected a loss of volume in general and around 70Hz. There if you test the pedals in series you will have the influence of both pedals regardless if you switch one or both of them on. Further, the order of the pedals is relevant. You have them in series. Therefore, the described effects might rather be caused by the order than the pedals themselfs. Regards, J
@tds21173 жыл бұрын

@@umiloyayi SRV also began using the TS10 immediately as it came out, replacing his 808 and 9. It's come back more recently, and is raising in price, because people are finding out all these famous guitarists thought it was better than the others.

잘치니깐 둘다 좋네;;; ts808이 있고 출력 낮고 빈티지해서 ts9를 알라보는데 어렵네요

Giulio Mazzocco I heavily disagree with extreme prejudice. Especially because I feel the exact same way, and that goes against years of reading up on those two pedals in dad rock forums where people defend to the death one or the other!

TS9 darker more squashed sounding, TS808 brighter more friendly. I like the TS808.

The sound of the TS808 distorts less than the sound of the TS9 and in addition, the TS808 is brighter and more transparent than the TS9.

They don’t sound the same, but the tonal differences are very minor. So I bought the Earthquaker Palisades and never looked bac.

What’s crazy is that my visual taste flipped overnight. I think it’s the vintage and SRV thing that got me

They are really close, the TS9 have som strange top end frequency, that I dislike, but it is very subtle. Personaly Im not that big fan of classic tube screamer. But there are some rally cool "clones". Brian Wampler on his channel debunked what is the real difference between 808 and 9 and the extra money for 808 are just for nostalgia and esthetics. There are no superior components in 808.

I loved your other Tube Screamer demo but in this demo you were switching way too fast that my ears couldn't catch up to your switching. Would have been nice if you gave us a couple of seconds to listen between switching. This demo was disappointing compared to the other one. Also annoying that I had to keep pausing to read the narration because you were going so fast. Would love to see a slower remake of this. Anyway great riff and thanks for your efforts.
