Hi IB English guys, you have truly been a great help and can’t thank you enough. I’m not sure if you have the time but I had one question in individual oral. My global question is “How is the marginalization of those who challenge societal expectations shown in both works?” Extract 1- The crucible Extract 2- Matika Wilbur Project 562- focuses on challenging the stereotypes and assumptions towards native Americans through her photography. I was wondering if my global question is good or should I change it? Thank you

What about the compare and contrast structure for the IO?
@thtfth5 ай бұрын
Hi. If the guideline specifies choosing an extract from the text, then why do you need to 'go wide' and focus outside of that chosen extract? Doesn't that kind of defeats the whole point of choosing an abstract? Or, say, for the literary piece, must you include two extracts from different sections of the text?
@googotygame3 ай бұрын
Fr, I'm also confused about that.

Hello Dave and Andrew. Your videos are very helpful to both teachers and students - a big heartfelt "thank you" from my students and myself. May I request you to elaborate on two points, which for many students (and, indeed, teachers) are a bit of a grey area: 1. When we are discussing a large work, such as a novel or a full-length play, the extract is the zooming in, while the portions of the work where that GI is prominently featured or developed are the zooming out. Therfore, in your opinion, how many of these zooming out points of reference should students attempt, while, at the same time, zooming in on the extract, in order to secure a good mark for criterion A and B? There are just 5 minutes for each segment of the IO, and that's hardly much time to expound in detail. What if a student does zoom in and out, but instead - after the introduction - divides the time equally between speaking of the larger work and then analyzing the exact? 2. This is a bit tricky for some. How is the zooming in and out done effectively if one chooses a collection of short poems or stories by a single author as the literature text? Could you clarify (again, in your opinion), how many smaller texts does a student have to address in 5 minutes of oral time in BOTH literature and non-literature to constitute a BOW? In this regard, could you also explain the distinctions between work, body of work, and extract. Once again, I do appreciate your guidance Regards, Peter
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. We like students to try to reference three OTHER moments in the novel where they see the global issue and then talk about these briefly, hopefully pointing to an interesting authorial choice of some kind. This cannot be long as they need to cover other parts of the text. Again, for smaller texts like poems, it’s wise to refer to three other poems in the work as a whole and point to the global issue. The student must try to balance the extract discussion with the discussion of the whole work and they need to be an expert on both. Not easy in the time allotted!
@danielflorentin89849 ай бұрын
Hi guys! Quick question... in my case, both of my extracts are from short literary and non-literary texts. One is from a short story from Edgar Allan Poe and the other one is an article of Zygmunt Bauman. The thing is that they are so short that my extract is basically the whole piece, so there wouldn't be anything interesting to talk about if I zoom out... Do you think that my zoom out could be talking about some pattern in other storys/articles of my two authors?
@ibenglishguys9 ай бұрын
yes, exactly. Your zoom out should branch out to OTHER stories in the collection by the author and connect to that global issue. This is important to do and to also to consider (briefly) authorial choices in those other stories.

I don't get it though. Should we have Zoom Out as a PEE and then go into Zoom In PEE, or should we have our PEEs in only the Zoom IN because my teacher says we shoudl have 3 PEEs per text??
@ibenglishguys2 жыл бұрын
When we zoom in and analyze our extract, we need to try to make as many close references tied to features with explanation (PEE) as we can. This is close reading and you should really try to dig into details of the text and analyze author choices in terms of your GLOBAL ISSUE. The zoom out is not a close reading. This is where you make reference to other areas of the text where you see the global issue. You are not giving precise quotations or references here. You are talking about that chapter or that other cartoon and how it reflects the Global issue. Hope this makes sense.

@ibenglishguys Hi, super helpful video. I was wondering if my GI needed further refining. "How does the influence of many different cultures and ideologies create an identity struggle?". I am discussing this with reference to Persepolis by Marjane Strapi, and I am also struggling to find a non-literary text to fit this issue. Cheers for everything, I was completely lost a week ago. Keep up the good work.

Great video! One question i have is how can i zoom out on a non literary text such as a comic. Should i refer to other works from the same author that have a similar issue?
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. Focus on ONE comic for your extract (as long as it’s one page or so) and then offer a discussion of 2-3 additional comments by the same artist for your zoom out.

Great video! I have quick question. I know the treatment of each text has to be balanced, but is it necessary for my Zoom in and Zoom out to be balanced as well? I don't see the latter on the rubric. Thanks!
@ibenglishguys3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question. Yes, the need to balance the "zoom in" and the "zoom out" is on the rubric. The term "extract" on the rubric refers to the "zoom in", and you can see this in Criteria A, B, and C. The words "and their works/texts" is found in A, B, and C. This refers to the "zoom out." So, please be sure to balance your time between the extracts and works as a whole. This is critical for IO success. Most importantly...keep the questions coming and let us know how we can help!

Hi very helpful video, how do we zoom in and out for a poem as a literary text of choice?
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
Zooming in means referring to your chosen poem relating to your global issue. Zooming out would be referring to 2-3 OTHER poems by the same poet linking to that same global issue.

I think this is OK if your teacher is careful to make sure students are not collaborating and that they are entirely working independently.

How many minutes should you spend talking about the wider body of work for each extract?
@ibenglishguys2 жыл бұрын
I would say you want to shoot for two minutes. We like 1-2-2-2-2-1 for a rough time breakdown. 1 minute intro; 2 minute zoom in; 2 minute zoom out: Switch 2 minute zoom in; 2 minute zoom out; 1 minute conclusion. Of course these are estimates and you can order things a bit differently if you like. Keep BALANCE in mind. Give specific references in your zoom out but don’t spend time ANALYZING. This is your chance to show you are an expert on the body of work.
@ahg62012 жыл бұрын
@@ibenglishguys So when I analyse the global body of work for poetry, I don't need to point out any interesting lines and analyse them? Just a summary of how they overall convey the global issue?

When discussing other poems, feel free to link to a feature or two and how they help articulate the GI. Nothing wrong with that at all. Please make sure to stay balanced with everything.
