Gotta say, your videos actually have given me a very good structure for my Swedish A IO. I’m almost done with structuing it, and I feel like this is going very well, so a big thank you for you guys! I have it in slightly less than a week.

Hi Roopashi! We're glad the videos are helping. We hope you go into your IO with confidence. Please know that you CAN do this! If you've watched the videos and applied the concepts to your work, Dave and I are optimistic you will be successful. Good luck and let us know how the real IO goes next week. Andrew

Hello! You guys are amazing for creating this series. I have one question. Our class studies political cartoons as a non-lit piece as well, how would we zoom out with political cartoons?
@musicthirst80243 ай бұрын
I love u guys and i have an urgent question!!! For my zoom out in my graphic novel text. Do i mention the page numbers? And for my nonliterary cartoon artwork, do i mention the title of the other artworks in the same collection that have the same theme for the zoom out?

My IO is in a few days and the two literary and non-literary works that I chose is "Close Range" by Annie Proulx and "We will no longer be seen and not heard" by Barbara Kruger. I have a quick question about the zooming-out for Kruger's work. Should I mention her other works and consider those as the whole body of work or just talk about her purpose of creating those artworks?
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
You should definitely refer to at least two other pieces of art by Kruger in your IO. Spend time identifying and discussing these and describe them (since you cannot show them) and mention one authorial choice and connect to your GI. Having just listened to about 70 IO’s, I found that most candidates needed more coverage of the body of work as a whole. Don’t skimp here. Aim for balance between the extract and the work as a whole. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the feedback! Be sure to "zoom out" during your IO. Yes, it's important to show deep knowledge of both extracts. That's half the game, but it's also important to show deep knowledge of the lit work as a whole and the non-lit BoW as a whole.
@bz69843 жыл бұрын
Is this for both Lang lit and lit? Also if we don't cover enough zoom out would we be able to cover it when the teacher asks questions? Thanks for the awesome concise videos!
@ibenglishguys3 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Yes, this video series is great for IB Literature as well! However, anytime the phrase "body of work" is used in this video, you must replace that phrase with "work in translation." IMPORTANT: Remember that for Lit, the IO must cover a literary work originally written in English AND one text written in another language and translated to English. Yes, you may cover the zoom out during the Q and A, but you're teacher would have to notice that you didn't zoom out well during your delivery and then ask the "right questions" to help you make up points for A and B. However, C will still be impacted because the 10-minute delivery did not adequately balance the zoom in/zoom out. Make sense? In short, I recommend you watch the "How to Structure Your IO" video where we give three different ways to organize your IO so you hit all the key parts during your 10 minute delivery.

Thank you so much, this helped me a lot preparing for the IO. Just one quick question: If I have a lot of points I want to talk about but I know I will be going over the time limit, should I get rid of some or try to summarise the points more?
@ibenglishguys2 жыл бұрын
There’s no way you can talk about it all. No way. Better to have three (maybe four) critical points with clear references than race through too many. Connect each one to your global issue and keep 1-2 in your back pocket for the Q and A. Students forget that they have 5 minutes where they can bring up additional ideas and points. Good luck.

what if your literary text is a novel? do you zoom out by looking at the novel as a whole? If so are you supposed to quote from outside your extract for evidence?
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
FOcus on the novel. For your “zoom out” try to find other moments within the novel that show the global issue.
@spookyskeleton62202 жыл бұрын
Your zoom out was around 1:15 instead of 2:00, what time should we dedicate more to fill in those gaps
@ibenglishguys2 жыл бұрын
I think you should shoot for 2 minutes to really talk about the work as a whole or body of work as a whole. Don’t short cut this section. Most do. Give specific moments in the novel/play where you see the global issue or refer to specific other texts in the body of work or scenes from the film. Describe what we see and HOW the author/creator used features to show this global issue. It takes some practice! Good luck.

Hi, if my non literary text is a talk show, is the body of work the parts of the episode beyond the extract, or does the other episodes within the whole show consider as body of work as well? for example, im using an extract of one of the episodes of patriot act by hasan minhaj. can i use other episodes in the show as my zoom out points?
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
My gut says to refer to other episodes from the talk show for your body of work. Just mentioning one episode does not seem to be enough to me. If you can do this, then I’d reach beyond your episode. I’d be interested to see what “authorial choices” you are referring to with a talk show format. Seems a bit hard to me but interesting if you are mindful of HOW it is delivered and formatted.

If I'm doing Kindred by Octavia Butler and just honing in on someone's environment can degrade their individuality. Do you need to use 3 moments like you did in the video, or could I just go into more depth about two other major moments that show my point?
@ibenglishguys11 ай бұрын
Two is OK of that is all you can find. We like three other moments to show the GI to show broader knowledge of the novel.

If it was a poetry collection like the worlds wife how many poems do we mention for the zoom out?
@ibenglishguys2 жыл бұрын
We like three references to three poems in the zoom out section. Try to offer a brief link to your GI and perhaps a line from the poem that shows this. Remember that you don’t have those three poems in front of you but you can refer to them in your outline for help. The key is showing that you know Duffy’s work as a poet and can link to other poems besides the one you are focusing on for your zoom in. Good luck!

Was it intentional of you guys in this video not to talk about specific authorial choices within the wider body of work or was that an oversight? Slightly confused because my feedback on my Mock IO was to go more indepth on HOW the author uses language to achieve the effects rather than providing an explanation of when he did. Is this just a personal preference thing within teachers?

that's really interesting, thank you. I have a question though. how can we illustrate our understanding without quoting specific features like you said. (you said comething along the lines of "don't use alliteration and personnfication"). You can't just claim "he feels shame" without proving your point through quotations, but if you can't use specific techniques used in the quotations, how does that work? Thanks again!
@ibenglishguys3 жыл бұрын
Good question. Please allow me to clarify. Yes, you MUST give specific features during the analysis...that is CRITICAL for criteria B and D! In the video, I intended to communicate that features such as alliteration and repetition are often "weak" choices to explore. Please focus on the "big moves" the author makes throughout the work. Think: if someone asked you to describe the craft of author X, what would you say? For example, I love Arundhati Roy. In her novel The God of Small Things, some of her "big moves" throughout the novel include childlike diction, extended metaphors, and color symbolism. So, when zooming out, I could mention where (aside from my extract) I see my Global Issue and/or I see the childlike diction, extended metaphors, color symbolism as linked to your GI. Make sense?
@juliea69833 жыл бұрын
@@ibenglishguys yeah that makes a lot of sense! one should focus on big topics and recurrent themes instead of just noticing the techniques used in a sentence... thanks a lot!

If students don't zoom out enough or at all how much would that affect evaluation A, B and C?
@ibenglishguys Жыл бұрын
It’s really a deal breaker if students don’t talk about the work or body of work as a whole. This is for Criteria A and C. In our minds, if students don’t discuss the work as a whole at all and only discuss the extract that would put them in the 3-4 band in Criterion A at best. Criterion C would also be low as there is no balance.
