This is so intense just watching her (or them) being underwater for what seems to be an eternity. Updated: The Cuban French twin sisters are 19-year-old Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz. They are daughters of the late Cuban percussion Anga Diaz. Naomi plays percussion (the Cajon and the Batas) while Lisa plays the piano. Together the twins have learned the songs of their father’s culture, Yoruba. Ibeyi is pronounced “ee-bey-ee” and translates as “Twins” in Yoruba. Ibeyi sings in English and Yoruba and has created a minimalist sound that merges elements of their heritage with the contemporary music they’ve grown to love as teenagers in Paris, citing artists such as James Blake and King Krule amongst their wide range of influences. Ibeyi are the first French artists directly signed for World by one of Beggars Group label in 30 years! they are on the loose again and ready to take the US by storm! One of their bigger gigs includes Webster Hall in New York, where they’ll be playing on October 2nd! Come listen to their strange and beautiful tunes sung in English and Yoruba - an ancient Nigerian language their ancestors used to speak before arriving in Cuba - on Afro-Cuban rhythms mixed with fuse jazz beats.

The sister duo of Ibeyi cultivate their vast cultural lineage through powerful seductive vocals and often times perplexing imagery. The yin and yang are always in constant motion. Their heritage and creed as Afro-Venezuelan, French women really makes for a stark take on their musical output. There is a very colloquial feeling that I have heard from Zap Mama, Les Nubians, and Ayo. The structure of their songs follows a similar journey. Although nowhere near as melodic and polished of a sound as Zap Mama and Les Nubians. Ibeyi the duo have a commanding, almost haunting vocal presence. When combined with the cinematography in their videos. The entire product is overtly symbolic of a diaspora. Even this video is slightly sublime, yet uncomfortable to watch. Them being raised and lowered in the "wash" of River is a very personal and spiritual submission. Take note.

I do not understand for the life of me why they aren't playing this type of good sounding REAL music on mainstream radio anymore! The radio stations these days are playing nothing but recycled trash from people who call themselves artists but who are devoid of talent and creativity. I am so thankful to hear REAL ARTISTS such as Ibeyi who actually take me back to my high school years of the late 90's up until 2000 as well as the early 2000's of anticipating new fresh music while glued to the radio because the music was so much better back then and most definitely better from the 60's-90's. Thank you Ibeyi for helping me to remember what "good current" music used to sound like...It is so refreshing to hear music that is different and current. Keep up the good work and I know your Father is looking down and very proud of the both of you!

You know if you really want to hear music like this on the radio, support radio stations and buy the racks these artists put out. Especially now. Plus ask yourself, how do YOU actively try to find alternative stations instead of automatically going to the typical mainstream? Each station is loosely grouped into genres and of course there are local and regional stations. For all we know songs and music like this is a part of a town, city, or even regional mainstream which is AMAZING!!!!

If you watch carefully a lot of the time they spend underwater is repeated in reverse, so the long parts at the start and the end are actually about half the time. That's not to say they didnt take millions of takes though. Kudos.
