I’m watching this from Toronto, Canada right now. Tonight its going down to -15 Celsius, with windchills making it feel like -23. And we haven’t seen green vegetation since September and won’t see it again until April. It’s hard to watch people enjoying warm weather at this point in the year.

Low Voltage Ram sticks are more expensive and harder to find than the regular server ram. There's an "L" in the part number so instead of PC3 it will say PC3L. i had to learn the hard way with my dell R410 server - i bought the wrong ram and the system would crash for no reason. you may be able to sell low voltage ram on ebay if you find it.

Big server scraps can be so much fun. But OMG they can be heavy. I've had to begin scrapping some in my truck after they were loaded by a forklift just to get down to components I could move around.

ya the trap doors are to prevent air pressure from escaping if a fan is removed during a hot swap repair procedure. the air flow has more resistance traveling through the server then a big hole beside the remaining fans. then the server can run on the remaining fans without a service interruption until a new fan can be replaced.

They're interesting but this old type isn't worth it. Hardware is pushing 11-14 years old now and the power consumption to performance is not worth keeping it at all. It was definitely powerful tech at the time though. You can buy servers now that have as many cores and a memory capacity as one or more of these systems fully populated.

The problem isn't that it's to old, it's actually not old enough!! That machine looked like it still had plenty life in it as a home server for someone, I started with something like this but sold it to someone else who loved what they were capable of for their age, the server I now have used to run a hospital in Melbourne... Runs completely off solar and batteries for overnight. But some of those machines like the one that you just took apart are worth more as an investment over time... Who woulda thought that a ford XY falcon GT would ever fetch over a million dollars?

i personally hate those servers! (they gave me a blumin hernia!) but its nice to actually see whats inside them! im guessing the gopro is above its max working temp (about 25 degrees i think) so i'd be careful as there's a slim chance of the battery popping! take care and stay cool! 😊🍺🍺🇬🇧🇬🇧

These are not RAMBUS memory modules. Just strait DDR SD-RAM. Heatsinks are no indication for RAMBUS since DDR RAM uses them also, especially on higher frequencys.

The painless CPUs can have nice gold foil under the heatsink caps. Not all, but I have found roughly 50 percent to be the average. Just pop them off with a vice.

Hello from Montana Ben. It is winter here, my slow time of the year. I watch your marathon videos while I scrap, keep them coming! Here, so far, you have to pay to get rid of lithium batteries so I am just hanging onto them for now. Might take a few to the shooting range.

With everything going virtual and the ability to run multiple operating systems on the same hardware, a lot of schools here in the US are acquiring older enterprise class hardware in order to modernize their networks. So this being one from around 15 -20 years ago was either a donation for a corporation after it reached it's end of useful life at said corporation or the school purchased it used at a good price. Then it was passed on to you because no one but maybe a home enthusiast would want it at this point.

Was exactly my thought as well. And with so many harddrives, which he always finds, he could build up Peta- or even Exabytes of storage capacity. With the waste heat of such a server-system he could warm up his daily shower-water.And earn money with the server.
