@bengoet894 жыл бұрын
@marcusp.79774 жыл бұрын

This is just great! I live in Nürnberg and I did this trip like 100 times or so. But I never had the cockpit view! For the larger part, the tracks are running alongside the autobahn. It is just stunning how slow the cars appear. The first half is hilly, and here the amount and the length of the tunnels is stunning, too. One last observation, if I may: The appearance of the sky changes tremendously quickly as well.

@Adwaenyth4 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of problems with high speed rail travel in the US. A lot of tracks aren't designed for high speed trains, tracks are shared with cargo trains a lot and cities are more wide spread than in Europe - add to that the absurdley low cost of fossile fuels in the US and you get what we have today. Although if the US really tried, Washington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston would be ideal terrain for a high speed railway for example. Large cities not that far apart mostly in one straight line.
@jayzo4 жыл бұрын
The US's population is also relatively sparsely populated, too. High Speed will work in places like California, the East Coast and Florida because they have large populations that are far away but not too far away. I would love to be able to ride a High speed train in a straight line coast to coast, but there's too small a population in-between to do that.
@MidnightAspec4 жыл бұрын
Adwaenyth the current Acela Express largely covers that on the NEC but you’re right with respect to sharing the ROW with extremely slow freight as well as commuter rail carriers (I.e.: MBTA, MTA, NJT, SEPTA and MARC).
@schmidt604104 жыл бұрын
You notice what's missing here? High speed rail in Europe doesn't have any grade crossings. Eliminating grade crossings in the US would be the single biggest expense.

I accidentally got an I.C.E. train to Munich (after my first 2 days in Germany riding slow commuter trains). The ride is quiet and smooth as silk. As a stupid tourist I learned that it's better economics to buy the higher priced I.C.E. ticket and save lots of travel time. When I boarded the train I had no idea that a train could even travel at these speeds. I looked out the window once we started moving and was like "what the fuck??"

I grew up in NN and learned all the history of the railroad, which was called the C&O, Chesapeake and Ohio. The railroad built the city because it brought coal down from the mountains to the sea for shipping anywhere. The Amtrak service to NN is pretty low-grade and the station is shabby and has no sense of place, and in fact is no place. Richmond has a beautiful old train station--which is not in use, another shabby no-where "station." Further up the line, King Street Alexandria and Union Station DC are nice. Just above Richmond is Ashland, which is famous for the houses facing the line which goes right through the old town.

Given that most American rail infrastructure that Amtrak uses is over 100 years old (often _well_ over) while German high-speed lines were all built within the last 50 years, that's an apt comparison. Unfortunately, many of my fellow Americans are quite resistant to the idea of providing the government funding/subsidies necessary to have a high-quality, high-speed passenger rail system. I'm hoping that changes radically as our younger, non-car-obsessed generations come of age and assert their political power.

Such a soothing sound and best view.. And btw, after watching this I realized why there are no high speed trains in India - density and infrastructure. For the same distance on Indian rails you will find - some 53 stations, 156 manual crossings, 335 vehicles crossing tracks, some 35 other trains waiting for clearance, 56 stone throwing (playing) kids, 550 people, 305 dogs, 450 sheep and some 250 cows and buffaloes, 25 villages where the passengers may pull emergency brake chains to get down near their houses, and if you are lucky you may even spot a few elephants on tracks. Thanks now I feel proud of Indian Railways.

I know you are just exaggerating, but is it really that hard? I mean who in his right mind would cross a railtrack? Or pull emergency brake? That is highly illegal and you will have to pay a fine or even face court proceedings.

@DJTrainBrain4 жыл бұрын
If it helps your confidence: on a well-designed railway, it wouldn't be possible for a signalman to set points to the not-straight-through setting and have the (cab) signals permit proceeding at such a high speed (and have the train's safety systems enforce it). If the points are set to take the train left or right, instead of straight through, it would only be possible to have the signals display a suitably lower permitted speed, and to have the train's safety system enforce that lower speed and slow the train down to it if the driver doesn't do that himself. It is all interlocked. So even if the signalman would make a mistake, the "interlocking" just wouldn't allow that mistake.

Can't compare this to the US. I spend 9 hours riding Amtrak from SC to Washington DC once 30+ years ago and that was enough for me.
