Its ry not like using a hammer. Its a very different feeling. Beyond that. Ice climbing js a lot harder than rock, just because it feels so... slow. Heavy. Rock, even with a full rack feels a lot more nimble... plus, you don't need to sink the tool an inch in. Half an inch is deep enough to hold you. Hitting it too hard can fracture the ice, and be even worse... their footwork was shite tho...

It’s as if they were practicing after a really strenuous and long day, like they’re about to fall asleep at any moment 🤣
@eastongallegos12723 жыл бұрын
Yeah... the ice tools tend to be a lot heavier and harder to use than you think. It's also not like using a hammer. Its a lot more nimble. Beyond that, you don't need to sink the tool. You just want about 1-2 cm deep. Thats enough. One of the things about climbing is respect and conservation. You don't need to damage the ice. On this climb, the climber didn't even need to sink the tool, they could have simply placed and pulled. Their footwork did suck tho...

Hes litterally practicing lol give him a break no one is a master when they start
@jonathanmueller28493 жыл бұрын
@@taikajorma7276 Nobody is a master when they start, but for safety's sake you should not match an inexperienced climber with an inexperienced belayer. That's a recipe for an easily avoidable accident. If the belayer were more experienced then the climber wouldn't have had a fall (no matter how controlled) while holding ice axes and wearing spiked boots. Even with a controlled descent if they land wrong those axes are capable of causing harm. They're already partaking in a potentially dangerous sport and, as you said, nobody is a master when they start. They *will* fall at some point, and if you're not careful falling in this sport can result in serious injury or even death. There's no honestly no reason to take risks like that, I'm sure no matter where you are you'd be able to find someone who knows what they're doing and is willing to teach you. Sorry for typing so much, BTW. I hope you have a good day.

The amount of arm chair ice climbers in this comment section is astounding, to be fair not many people have done it before. So if you want to be less ignorant here are some things I noticed about this video. (I have lead on ice walls and done a few seasons of ice climbing and mountaineering in Alaska) 1] It is not a pick, a spike, or an axe. If you use these words it is clear you haven't seen these in person. They're ice tools 2] the tips are sharp and you aren't supposed to swing hard into the ice, that's how you break plates at take nasty falls. Also this waterfall formation is right on hard rocks, the climber might not have much ice to sink into. 3] Falling on lead has many factors especially when falling while climbing ice. The belayer wasn't in the best stance so they got ripped especially because the climber barn doored. The ropes are also dynamic so when you mix these things together at such a low height the climber is going to hit the ground, but no one will get hurt. 4] the climber was trying to set their right tool, and due to being tired(most likely) the decided to prematurely advance their feet and as they were checking if their foot was secure, their strongest anchor point(the left tool) popped and then the swing away. This person is probably still learning which is why it looks like they are probably top roping. TL;DR climbing at your local gym with an auto belay is not like climbing in cold conditions with ice tools. It requires a different skill set and not all the belay logic is horizontally transferable. These two are still learning, they are in a group and for the most part being pretty safe. The only way to learn ice is to be on it. So stop being a bunch of arm chair climbers and go outside.

Nice belayer.... 😬.... 🤦🏼♀️ Nice climber..... Great combo 👌 Cuz why should you practice a dangerous sport with an experienced person?
@richardschofield22013 жыл бұрын
Ok ok. Yes the climber had the coordination and determination of a limp fish and the belayer was stood way to far away from the climber. The rope looked fairly tight, maybe she was taking it in and was slow to lock off. Not sure as it's out of shot. But you know what? No big deal! It was a top rope on maybe 6m of ice. No one is going to die. Climber probably now knows she can't lift her legs with one crappy axe placement and the belayer knows she can't hold the climbers weight stood 4m away from the climb. Everyone involved is now more knowledgeable and no one got seriously hurt. And yes, the climber could have got hurt, but no matter where you are on your climbing journey we all get ourselves into a position where things unravel a bit. Good for them for giving it a crack.
