Finally a subject I knew every answer for and can correct stuff the expert said! Canadiens have 24 Cups, not 26 and the Loser Point didn't come in until the 05/06 season when they did away with ties. The mid 80's was when they re-introduced OT, which had been absent since WW2.

Regarding Lord Stanley, some context which would make sense to Jim is that Lord Stanley was the Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893. He awarded the cup to the top amateur hockey team in Canada. Australia has a Governor General, like Canada, so Jim will understand these ceremonial roles.

The intros are getting and worse and worse each time, but it's hilarious! Always great to know that a podcast isn't taking itself too seriously. I still watch the episodes *with* the ad-reads even though I'm a Patreon subscriber!

I'd like to recommend "The Hanson Brothers", a hockey-themed, Ramones-esque, Canadian band. -The "Live in Waterloo" video on YT is quite lovely. (Not so much: HC band "Slapshot" from Boston)

When I was a little kid I watched a film about ice hockey and they held a guy down and shaved him, it disturbed me. I had a similar experience watching an episode of 21 Jump Street and there was some sort of frat party situation and pig chants. I for one am glad they have ratings.

Modern fighting is different. For one, the game is so, so fast - you need to have skill on the team. You can't afford the line spot for someone who's whole purpose is to get kicked out for 5min. You can have big players on the team, or are particularly antagonistic, that can be good at fighting. Fighting is no longer the specialty. Everyone wears visors for safety, so you're probably going to wreck your hands... Modern fighting is about creating momentum. You're looking to re-energize the crowd, or your team, or in response to a really ugly act, or if your goalie is hit

I love that North Americans assume field hockey is a variation of ice hockey and not the other way round. Hockey (as we call it in the UK) is played mostly by girls on grass (and is pretty lame. Not gonna lie). Ice hockey came along much later.

I will not hear the name of the beloved Tom Hanks being besmirched, he is one of the truly nicest people and absolutely does not think of himself as a hero or whatever this nobody guest thinks of him, we could however absolutely do without Chet Hanks who actually thinks way too highly of himself

So, you were talking over an hour about ice-hockey BEFORE you had a gig in Helsinki, Finland AND you were able NOT to mention ice-hockey at all during the show. That's something. Well you underlined Finland is know for its car racers, which is of course true. But still. Yeah.

I live between Ottawa and Montreal and could never get tickets when he was in town. Back in 2015 I was working in Sudbury that day and Jim was performing that night. I called the venue about tickets and they allowed me to reserve ticket with my credit card. The job went to shit and took forever. I raced to the rink to catch what's left of the show and the ticket booth was closed. But I had a conformation number in email. Security were dicks and wouldn't let me in. Lost my phone somewhere in between. Retracing my steps I went to the rink to see if it was there. Thankfully it was and the lady said I missed a great show. Also turns out I paid for a VIP ticket and may have had a chance to meet him.

Growing up in Canada my dad played as a goalie. And was very good. He could have made it a career until he knocked up my mom at 18. (My sister) We always had a rink in the backyard and I started skating at 2yrs old. Hockey was a household thing and it was never a question if I would play. I became a goalie like my dad. My 2 younger brothers followed. I love hearing when people that have never played, try to play. Or love to watch it.

I know they have gotten better. But back in the day my team was challenged to play a women's world cup team to see where they stand. Not contact. My Bantam team win 8-0? I'm not saying they couldn't do better. But I think the fact that the players broke off hits might have frightened

Was really hoping Jim would say he knows what a Zamboni is for the same reason I do: Stone Cold Steve Austin driving one to the ring to beat up Vince McMahon. Also, just so you know, the only people who say “hitting a baseball is the hardest thing in sports” are Americans. Maybe some Japanese and Cubans. The rest of the world, of course, knows this isn’t true in any way, shape or form.
Forsberg changed perception of Swedish players
