Clean vocals are definitely a 'gateway drug' when it comes to harsh vocals. In terms of my journey with metal and just general 'heavier music', I started with Linkin Park, 20 years ago, which led me into heavier stuff like Korn, Mushroomhead, SlipKnot, etc, and I've been listening to metal in some form or another ever since.

@shona55123 жыл бұрын
I agree. My gateway was A Day To Remember because I always loved pop punk bands like Blink 182 & Sum 41 when I was younger. The clean vocals help you "tolerate" the screams.. and it just keeps progressing until your appreciation for harsh vocals grows to the point that you're no longer tolerating it, you're enjoying it. Nowadays I listen to music that's almost entirely harsh vocals.. and I never would have thought I would be at that point because 10 years ago, I despised any form of screaming.

Sounds similar to me went from Linkin Park to Korn and Avenged Sevenfold to Slipknot then my friend showed me Fleshgod Apocalypse and Bloodbath which needless to say Fleshgod Apocalypse made me love Death and Symphonic I never knew Symphonic Metal existed till Fleshgod Apocalypse which then led to Nightwish, Epica,Dimmu Borgir, etc. And Symphonic Metal is definitely my favorite now

when it came to harsh vocals for me I kinda stumbled upon them through parkway drive (being an aussie that was inevitable I feel like) on a late night metal show on channel v, I loved the music and the musicianship to the point I had their songs on repeat on the school bus haha, but the screaming was very un palatable at the beginning and I think looking up the lyrics and following along helped with that, it also led me to checking out other bands in the genre and eventually being able to understand mostly what they are saying without looking up lyrics, I also became so intrigued with the sound that I taught myself how to scream, "harsh metal" had a big impact on me.

Parents were fans of 99.9 so I heard a lot of soundgarden, nirvana, pearl jam, and then the classics like metallica, led zeppelin, etc. It wasn't til i was in middle school and this popular girl said I looked like some weirdo who listened to slipknot. At that time I had no clue who that was. I searched them on KZbin, psychosocial had just been released a month or two prior, and I fell in love instantly with the harsher vocals of Corey Taylor. It sent me down a rabbit hole where I discovered whitechapel, suicide silence, job for a cowboy, as I lay dying, bring me the horizon, the list just goes on. TLDR preppy girl said I look like I like slipknot, gave them a listen once and wore that like a badge of honor.
