Back in the early 90s there used to be organized ice racing for dirt bikes and quads. Of the types of racing I have experienced it was near the top for just plain fun. So if memory serves the longer studs (1" inch) was not the setup. The idea was to increase the number of scratch lines while reducing weight which usually meant screw type studs with just the 1/4 inch head sticking out. Also get the suspension lowered. When you get 3 or 4 guys drifting an oval track it is magical.

We run the same studs in dirt bike tires for winter trail riding. You don't need to stay on the ice with these, the studs are carbide tipped and don't wear down on dirt like screws. While playing on a lake is fun, riding frozen icy trails is even better.
