iirc it is a lot of fuel, something like a missed approach, travel to alternative airport, missed approach there, and then landing, with another 20 minutes of flight. Might not be exact, but it is something like that.

Another common term with autopilot is to treat it as a third crew member. You'll still be there monitoring it and making sure that it's flying well. What I wonder though is, are the pilots allowed out of the cockpit (to possibly stretch) one at a time or not at all?

If I remember, on long flights which could take almost a day, Pilots are changed (replaced by a backup Pilot) so the original Pilot can sleep/rest in the crew rest area. Other than that, I guess you could mention bathroom breaks but maybe not.

The whole opening the door mid-flight myth is actually somewhat possible of some MD-80s , which have a tail door exit where there is less pressure pushing on it.

1:49: It's possible to open the door mid-flight at certain scenarios. The emergency exit doors of the plane can be opened if A. There is not enough pressure difference -At lower altitudes, when the aircraft is not pressurized, and the air pressure equals the inside and outside of the cabin will not hold up the door. (By manufacturer's design most of the doors still can't be opened due to the design of the doors) B. There is no protection cover from the door lever -Some emergency exit doors have a hydraulic mechanism if the person intended to do, anyway, the hydraulic mechanism helps push the door outward although it can only be done at lower altitudes. (also note that it depends on the manufacturer's design) Thank you.

1:46 the metaphor i heard for this was: imagine you suspended a bead in the middle of some jello. you can shake that jello as much as you want and the bead won't fall out, even if it moves around. essentially, turbulence just means the air is moving around, but it's not going to cause the plane to drop out of the sky

Actually, not having airplane mode on has messed with navigation needles, and it can interfere will aircraft calls to ground control and others. It’ll more just be a little ticking, so it’s more annoying than dangerous. Screwing with navigation needles is rare, but has definitely happened, and that is definitely happened Along with, as he said, being charged in other countries or your phone connecting to international cell towers

Unfortunate fact: turbulence CAN crash a plane, or well break it in half i guess… BOAC 911 (no it wasnt a hijacking) broke up in mid-air whilst flying near Mount Fuji after extreme, but like VERY EXTREME turbulence. Fortunately, that happened more than 50 years ago on a Boeing 707 so nowadays the chance of something like that happening are extremely low

Obeys what the pilots tell it to. I.e. it keeps the plane in a certain rate of climb, or altitude and speed. It cannot be activated without human input though.

The bermuda triangle is only called so because more planes fly over it. Think about it this way: Why isn't the "antarctic parallelogram" a thing? because literally no one flies over it. Hundreds of planes fly over the "bermuda triangle" every day. Therefore, it can be concluded that more planes will crash over it than antarctica. I guess it has worse weather, but I don't see how that's relevant.

It's just that some planes don't support wifi so they ask for people to turn airplane mode on, but if you dont it causes disruptions to the cabins communication system.

In August 2001 an A330-300 is heading to Azores island when someone forget to turn on airplane mode. Suddenly the plane engines stopped at the Atlantic Ocean but managed to glide to the airport. The plane landed on its left gear first then the right gear after doing the Ryanair hard landing. This caused the landing gear door to strike the ground.(Air transat flight 236). Luckily the pilot managed to save 300 passengers. The cabinets crew opened his the door until the slide has been deployed. No one brings anything instead the passengers moved form the A330 to the airport😪

in regards to turbulence, no it can actually be quiet severe, a BOAC 707 in the 60s was outright destroyed from severe turbulence, infact it was so severe its been speculated that just prior to the aircraft breaking up it was quiet possible several passengers were already dead due to the rapidly shifting and severe +\-7.5+Gs the jet was subjected to.. though admittedly due to crashes like that we learned what areas to avoid flying in, so the odds of a jet ever encountering such turbulence today are next to zero, i just thought id mention it tho

Autopilot is just a bunch of settings that the pilot can turn on, but you still need to make sure autopilot isn’t stupid, you still need to hail atc, it only a does a tiny fraction of the pilots job. It also can’t land the plane (although it could probably do it better than Ryanair pilots if we taught it how to) or take off.

Airplane mode is for you not crashing so if you turn it on the data gets signaled onto the towers then onto the plane. Planes are like phones too.
