Went ice skating tonight for the first time. Watched this video and did everything he said. Not only did I survive but I think I did pretty well. I guess I’m older and I probably won’t be as fluid as those who have skated since they were young but it was fun. Here are a few more takeaways I had and could be helpful to others: - having the correct size skates and lacing them up correctly is kind. Do that. Also, wear taller socks. Your feet will not hurt as much. - my skating skills started to suffer when I got tired. Take breaks often. Know when to quit. - when given the choice between hockey or figure, take figure. (My advice. Do you.) - wear a jacket or something with a little padding, especially on the elbows. - if you fall, and believe it or not I didn’t but a couple of times, let it happen. Just go limp. Protect your head. Lay there for a second.m and then get back up - one skate at a time. Thank you for this video. I will be watching more. Thank you!!

i have been roller skating since August and went for ice skating for the first time today! ice skating is very similar and very different from roller skating! incredibly difficult to push forward compared to roller skates. bending my knees same as in roller skating helped me massively to keep my balance and not to fall over. also, spinning is wayyyy easier in ice skates, so i really enjoyed doing that. i was that one weird person who can not properly skate but can nicely spin becausee of jam skating i am doing!

If the snowplow stop is very confusing for you, I also recommend looking at the T-stop. The snowplow stop is easier, especially to do on command of you need to stop quickly. But it's much harder to explain. Certain aspects come down to attempting the stop until you 'get it'. By comparison the T-stop is harder, but has steps for every part of it that are easy to explain. As someone with a very analytical brain, the clear steps made this stop easier to start with.
@3ghostsinatrenchcoat Жыл бұрын
As a beginner, I definitely favor the T-stop. Snowplow stops scare me-I worry that instead of stopping my toes are just going to run into each other and I'll fall over.

Other tips could be: - try not to block your shoulders. I know it can be frightening at first, but the more you're relaxed, the more you're ready to do whatever is necessary on the ice (and trust me, panicking is not) - try to put your weight on your toes, so that in case you fall, you'll do it in front and not backward. In case you fall backward, use your glutes and not your head first ;) - if you feel like it's getting overwhelming for you, slow down and rest your legs and your head - never stop in front of the entry, unless you fall, because you never know who'll try to be a Rocketman next - if you go ice skating with someone else, it's probably easier because you'll get to chat along the way, but if you're by yourself and need help, just ask. The majority of the people there know how difficult it can be to skate for the first time, so they'll help you out with your skills or escort you to the exit - stay attentive to the other people around you. it's a bit like driving a car: you don't want to bump into someone else, especially if they're going relentlessly fast. and if you're gaining speed without it being your goal, slow down for the love of God! You can either use the method here or you can slowly use the borders of the rink to help you slow down. Another technique could be the L method, but be sure to have enough stability before attempting it

I "stumbled" across this video looking for the proper way to fall. I'm a 61 year old Canadian so I've been skating forever but last year around this time I fell and broke my wrist. In a cast for all of January. I want to get back out this winter skating with my daughter but I thought I'd better be prepared this year. It's not that I'm afraid of falling ... it's the LANDING 🤣🤣🤣🤣Cheers Coach!

Not a funny story but my first-time skating was a few years ago and I was 10 I believe and by the member of staff they said I was the fastest and best person on the ice and that is what's been driving me to go back and I'm going back tomorrow! it's been a few years so it will be like relearning it all again also, I don't recommend the snowplow stop as it can make you trip forward if you're not careful i would recommend the T stop best its where you basically skate with one foot and drag the other foot behind you facing away from your side. Edit: I went again for first time in years and i was really good better than i though i pick up the pace a bit and went really fast was fun. Lol and im going AGAIN! In 2 days Merry Christmas everyone!

When I first got on the ice like a year ago. I had no idea how to ice skate and just walked on the ice which made me fall like 8 times. Maybe even 12. But I started training more after the winter season with roller blades. Sort of figuring out my balance. And this year when I got on the ice like a day ago and i had more stabilisation, but I still fell, which again hurt, but everything has its time. And I really wanted to learn and I'm gonna try this tutorial. Thank you ❤

The thumbnail shocked me so hard, it looked like you were using the back end of your skate like a second toe pick and skipping like Broadway dancer doing jazz hands. I thought both, "Oh lord please don't," and also, "That's so cool, how do you do it." But the whole tutorial is both educational and amusing. I'm not sure if my first time skating was typical, but I was around 6 or 7, and my babysitter just told me, "Whatever you do, just do not hold onto the wall. You'll never learn if you do," and skated off. So I just... Skated. Had a blast. Don't remember much else until my babysitter's friend came and collected me in hurry awhile latter. Turns out one of my older sisters caught her pick in a deep groove and split her chin open. Needed 9 stitches. I was just grumpy I had to leave. I actually never fell on the ice until I was 28 when a small child zooming backwards barrelled into me while I was practicing crossovers. Tiny death traps... :)

Its really difficult to tie rentals too tight, but the skates should not hurt and absolutely should not make your feet numb or tingly. If it hurts or make your feet tingly the, take your skates off and retie with that area looser. If its a peircing pain then perhaps something protecting your skin from that side of the skate will help or a newer skate if that one's padding has worn down to nothing. If its pressing on one part of your foot, then really loosening that section will be the best you can do. If that doesnt work you may need different size or brand with a shape that better matches your feet. If its tingly its probably cutting off blood circulation. Whereever the tingling starts is too tight. If your feet are going numb, take the skates off IMMEDIATELY. The skates are likely pinching a nerve which can lead to perminent damage if prolonged. There is an exposed nerve under the inside of your ankle, when retying make sure that area isnt under heavy pressure.
@Archer_Starling2 жыл бұрын
So what if you tie your skates as tight as they can go but you still have room for your ankles to roll outward/inward while on the ice? ( the size for the skates are correct just in case that makes a difference)
@___i3ambi1262 жыл бұрын
@@Archer_Starling You shouldnt be able to fit 3 fingers between your skin and skate. If you cant get them that tight, then theyre likely a bit too big. At least on the ankle area

When my friends invited me and my siblings to ice skate with them, I didn't know how, it was my first time! But it was like everyone's 3rd and 4th time and I didn't wanna look weird😟So i searched up beginning tips and I watched this vid the NIGHT BEFORE!!! It worked well! I got skates that were similar to the ones here that the guy was recommending, and the ice at first was terrrifffyying. Like, feeling like ur hovering right over the slippery ocean, terrifying. But I held onto the wall at first, and skated slowly, then let go of the wall skating slowly, then fast, then REALLY FAST. And by the end, I was teaching my sister how to let go of the wall and this was her 2nd time skating!!!💗💗💗Now, you will fall your first few times. Yes, I got the hang of it quickly, but that doesn't mean that I didn't fall, I fell like 4-5 times, but my friends fell too and they were experienced!! Everyone falls! The first step is to accept that mistakes are going to be made, as it is the ice after all, but the 2nd step is to want to improve :) Everytime I fell, I got up quickly and recalled these tips in my head, and I ended up having a fun time and ended the session with a sore butt, cold face and hands, but a want to get back out on the ice again!❤😂😂
