I would like to point out that if Reykjanesbraut gets closed then we have Suðurstrandavegur. The road is not as good as Reykjanesbraut so they would have to limit the amount of cars that could pass through there, but at least people of Reykjanesbær would not be stranded

Nice, I met a team of 3 women in July last year measuring the lava from the Litli Hrutur eruption. They had a big GPS antenna at a fixed point and even got all airtraffic to a halt above the area when they got their drone airborne.

Glad they finally released the orthorectified image of the lava field. Means going back to mapping and refining that shapefile (the sep. 10th/15th version should also be in your mail)

Shawn,, can you get a graphics expert to put all those up and down, and horizontal movements, in a time lapse animated graphic movie, with exaggerated scaling, so we can just watch the land pull apart, and lift up? It would be extremely powerful for teaching science (I am a retired earth science and physics teacher).

I flew out of the airport on the 23rd and noticed a lot more VOG and steam coming out of the fissures. This is a notable change from when I flew over the fissures on the 12th of September.

Looking at the crustal Deformation charts ( 6:34 onwards), is is correct to say, the Up/Down deformation is originating from magma, but the contribution to a shift towards South/West direction actually is a result from the tectonic tension between the plates? Basically, do the magma intrusions provide friction momentum for the tectonic movements?

Thank you so much as allways. I am a bit curious about your views on Katla. She allways creates the most hysterical doomsday chanels to blow up, and then it is hard to understand what is going on. Katla will probably make a big blurp during my lifetime, and we will be put on notice for sure. But Katla is one of my favourite volcanos ever since I was a kid (Hekla too of course, but Katla allways was a bit more fascinating). So, if you have the time and want to I would love to hear you talk about her and the flooding that they seem to relate to activity in Katla. Hey Shawn, thanks for your nice Reports about Island. I'm kinda confused about the Donut view, which color indicates which Data? Ist blue a drop or a high uplift or what does this colors show to us? I would actually expect, that Red ist an uplift and blue ist a drop? But the Donut show me that this isn't correct. Could you explain the colors in this Views, please?

Thanks for the update. If that main road gets covered by lava, reopening it to the public and heavy traffic may be different to reopening the lava covered roads around Grindivik and the power plant.

As the lava flows are not necessarily making the ground thicker in the same spots, I would imagine at some point the uplift as shown on the satellite radar might be caused by the thickness of the lava flow rather than the intrusion of magma... I wonder how much thicker the lava flow accumulation needs to be before that difference becomes noticeable

A question in case anyone here knows about such things: is it possible that volcanic activity can have an effect on tectonic earthquakes? Eg can eruptions and their associated earthquakes be "the last straw" which causes an earthquake whose underlying cause is the diverging plate boundary?

Shawn, speaking as a musician, please don't use "crescendo" to mean "peak" or "climax". You don't "reach a crescendo". The crescendo is the reaching process. It means "getting gradually louder". It is becoming increasingly used in the media for "maximum". Absolute nonsense. Needs to be thrown out as inappropriate use of jargon that belongs in another field!

The water from the peninsula is for hot water for heating, not energy. Low temperature areas are not useful for power, a power plant would also take years to develop but hot water is comparatively simple.

The Aug 22 eruption happened the day I arrived in Iceland, and it was magic being able to see the eruption from my hotel room (Konvin). We also had great views from the lookout at Vogar and from the lookout just on the right as you start down the road to the Blue Lagoon. My friend drove while I videoed the eruption as we went up and down the highway between the airport and Reykjavik. I was addicted! She was patient...lol. Great start to our holiday! Best time ever!

@ShawnWillsey - how big will the swelling West of Thorbjörn have to get, before the ground directly above the magma store starts to crack and release the magma? It's up around 700mm now and every single eruption is at a higher upward displacement.

I followed a lot of this from before the first eruption in this series. But recently, my following all of it has dropped off to almost nothing. Dunno what my reasons were. Has anything happened to man-made structures (homes, businesses) in cities or power plants?
